During the last days of the Civil War, a lost soldier and a young blind woman fall in love. Though one is Confederate and one Union, they discover their similarities are far more important than their differences. The woman’s widowed mother, with one soldier son killed in front of her and another son still missing, is unable to let go of her bitterness and hatred. As a nation begins the task of healing, the burning need for vengeance may reap unimaginably tragic consequences. This play will be presented outside in Lazybrook Park as part of Tunkhannock’s sesquicentennial celebration of the Civil War. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 for more information.

Presented by: Thomas Jolin
Admission: Free

The trauma of the Civil War produced a tremendous amount of music as the nation mourned and sought relief from the death of over 600,000 Americans. Songs about soldiers’ lives, domestic scenes, minstrel traditions, and the fight to end slavery give us insight into what it was really like to live during that time. Performing on hammered dulcimer, button accordion, harmonica and banjo, Thomas Jolin shares Lincoln and Liberty, Battle Cry of Freedom, No More Auction Block and more. He also discusses the origins of the songs and instruments. Audience participation is encouraged. Tickets are available by calling the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 or visiting the Dietrich ticket booth.

At The Dietrich by And then, in honor of this being the 150th anniversary of the war that split our nation asunder, Jennifer is doing one of her beautiful plays. This one is called The Bridegroom of Blowing Rock, and it’s the story of a young blind woman and her soldier lover. But since he was on the opposite side of the war, can they live a loving life or will the bitterness of war bring just another tragedy to bear? It’s so worth seeing, it’s free, and it’s outside at Lazybrook, a lovely place to stage a drama, and especially one about the civil war. Helps you to appreciate the peaceful, beautiful surroundings we take for granted every day. And of course we have some big movies coming up. As far as I know, we are going to be able to bring you all the blockbusters with perhaps the exception of World War Z, because we don’t have enough screens. (Darn!) Superman is her and This is the End which is very raunchy and very funny, getting 98% on Rottentomatoes.com. And starting today we will have matinees every day, for your viewing pleasure. Cool, hmmm?
So this weekend was sad, as we attended the memorial service of Jessie Reppy Keker, a most loved Board member and the wife of our theater Treasurer. She worked closely with Mark Mitchell and Margie to bring us absolutely gorgeous displays in the Earnshaw. I expected to be sad at the memorial service, because she was taken too soon, but I didn’t expect to be awed!
She was an incredibly accomplished woman. She had a PhD (I’m not sure I even knew that) and her texts on English as a Second Language are still the authoritative texts used all over the world today. She was a world traveler and a professor at Brooklyn College and other prestigious schools. She taught ESL to Vietnamese refugees in Southeast Asia refugee camps. I never knew any of that and I was so sorry I didn’t. When I heard about her life there were so many questions I would have loved to ask her.
But for all her myriad accomplishments, it was love she seemed to excel at. Her husband mourned her, and so did her friends. And many of the friends who mourned were from her childhood at the river in Falls. Richard Fitzsimmons gave one of the loveliest talks I’ve ever heard at a service, and he talked about their friendship, their summers at the river, her quiet love of nature, her exemplary life. And there in the gathering, amidst family and friends, were two of the women she went to grade school with so many years ago. She never lost touch with those she loved. She sent notes, cards, little reminders of how much they meant to her. She led an exemplary life. She specialized in love. I so wish I had known her better.

The show was spectacular from the story with its unique twists and turns to the dazzling costumes to the enchanting set to the remarkable cast. To add to the magic of the day, Douglas Carter Beane, writer of the new book for "Cinderella" and part-time Tunkhannock resident, arranged for us to have a Q & A with the stage manager and some of the cast. We were joined by a group of elementary school children for the Q & A and they asked some pretty interesting questions such as ‘How does the set move?’ and "What do actors do during intermission?’ Then we enjoyed a delicious family-style dinner at Carmine’s. You couldn’t ask for a better day in my opinion! If you haven’t seen "Cinderella" on Broadway, gather up your friends and family and take a day trip. It’s well worth it! More live theatre will be coming to Tunkhannock with the Dietrich Community Theatre’s production of "The Bridegroom of Blowing Rock" by Catherine Trieshmann on Friday, June 21 and Saturday, June 22 at 7:00 p.m. at Lazybrook Park. Director Jennifer Jenkins and her cast and crew have been tirelessly working to bring this performance to the community as part of Tunkhannock’s sesquicentennial commemoration of the Civil War. You are invited to join us for this free performance. Just bring your own lawn chair or blanket. You won’t want to miss it. For more information, please call us at 570-996-1500. In addition to offering opportunities to experience theatre arts this month, the Dietrich is also presenting a variety of classes for adults and camps for kids. For instance, local jewelry maker Toni Hockman will be teaching Jewelry Making: Right Angle Weave for students ages 16 and up. This beginner class will be held on Wednesday, June 26 from 6:00 p.m .to 9:00 p.m. During this class you will design and create your own bracelet as you learn this versatile bead weaving stitch. I have taken a couple of Toni’s classes in the past and learned so much. Admission is $40 and materials will be provided. And children can go on adventures through our Theatre and Visual Arts camps, Acting Camps for Kids, All About Pottery & Sculpture Camp, Art Explorers Camp and more. For more information or to register for any of these offerings, please call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500. |
