At The Dietrich by As you may have guessed, I’m no kind of traveler. When people start talking about their world travels I sit in wonder at how they can possibly leave home for anything over two days. I get homesick before I’ve even left. For days before I go anywhere I am so homesick I feel ill. I miss people who are sitting across the dinner table from me. I miss the dogs. I miss the cats. I miss the theater and my friends and my fields and the way the sky looks on a cold winter’s (or summer’s or spring or fall) morning as the sun bears down on the birch tree. I miss the trees. What if, in my absence, a great wind comes down off the hillside and splits my beloved catalpa asunder and I didn’t get to say goodbye? What if what if what if???? But when Shannon called and asked me to visit, impulsively I said “Why yes! That sounds lovely! Of course I’ll come.” And then we both got excited at the idea that I would actually visit her and her beloved Daniel and then we started making plans and when it occurred to me to panic it was far too late. In fact, I’d already ordered the plane tickets! And I really, really wanted to go. Shannon and Daniel are both finishing up their PhD.’s so there was no travel in their immediate future. And I missed her so terribly I just had to see her. And of course, there were those plane tickets.
WAIT!!!! I said to my husband in the middle of the night! Fly??? Fly???? Whatever was I thinking? I don’t fly. My father said planes were totally unnatural and no one should go near them. (How planes being in the air were unnatural to him but a billion ton ship floating wasn’t I have no idea.) Even the thought of getting on a plane made me want to go into the closet, shut the door and hide. From everyone. From everything.
And now I had tickets to fly to St. Paul! I had to find a reason not to go. Perhaps if I broke a leg. Or got lost in the woods. Or got food poisoned. Or sat out in the snow and got a chill. Or did all of them at once.
Sigh.
But then I wouldn’t see my delightful, brilliant, beautiful, funny daughter and her partner. I wouldn’t see where they’ve lived for the past four years and will leave after they get those degrees. I wouldn’t get to curl up on the sofa with my daughter and a cup of hot chocolate and chatter away as only mums and their girls can do. And I would put a truly stupid phobia ahead of seeing the love of my life.
So I went. Sandy and Ronnie took me to Philadelphia. I was great until they were out of sight. Then I looked at the planes and the people and all the signs of travel that frighten me so. I thought I couldn’t do this. I really really couldn’t do this. I wanted to run. It didn’t matter where. Just run until my spirit and my body were one again. I went to pick up my bag.
“Going to visit family for Christmas?” the voice asked and I turned to see a blonde woman about my age, smiling at me. “It’s pretty cold where you’re going, but friendly,” she laughed. And I laughed back. She thought I was a regular traveler. An ordinary traveler doing an ordinary thing. My heart rate slowed. My hands unclenched.
“I am,” I said. “I’m going to see my daughter.”
“Me, too,” she said.
And so we did.

Their recent show definitely transported us back to those thrilling days of radio. We first were treated to a radio adaptation of "A Christmas Carol". Rick Ryczak was fantastic as Ebenezer Scrooge and the whole cast put us in the holiday spirit. Then we experienced the radio classic "My Favorite Wife". What a hoot! I especially enjoyed the sound effects that Esther Harmatz and Georgia Smith incorporated into the performance. Over 100 children and adults came out to the show and we couldn’t have asked for a better evening. We would like to thank Hoyt Keiser and Esther Harmatz for directing the show and the entire cast of community members for giving us such a wonderful gift. Speaking of gifts, I would just like to take a moment to mention that Dietrich movie gift bags are perfect for just about anyone on your gift giving list – teachers, employees, teens, movie buffs. They are beautifully wrapped and make a nice night out at the movies. Some folks also like to combine a movie bag with a gift certificate for dinner at one of Tunkhannock’s fine eateries. Sounds good! Right? We also have another free program coming up on Tuesday, December 17th. Join us for our annual showings of It’s a Wonderful Life on the big screen. There is nothing quite like seeing it in a theater full of people. Show times will be at 2:00 p.m., 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Admission, popcorn and soda will be free thanks to Ace Robbins Inc. We recommend coming early because tickets are first come, first served. The theater will also be offering Holiday Camp later this month. On Friday, December 27 and Monday, December 30 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., artists-in-residence Amy and Steve Colley will show young artists how to throw pots on a potter’s wheel. Students will also create sculptures and explore drawing and painting. This class is geared for children ages five to twelve years old and admission is $25. What a great opportunity to explore the arts during holidays! Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 for more information or to register. If your children are more interested in the theatre arts, the Dietrich will be bringing back its popular After School Theatre Arts in January. During this class series, middle school and high school students will be able to experience theatre arts as they create their own script, props, and costumes. They will also learn about movement, lighting and sound. Classes will be held on Wednesdays and Thursdays, January 8 through February 27 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Dietrich Theater. The class series will be led by Jennifer Jenkins and admission is free. It will culminate in a live performance on Saturday, March 1 at 11:00 a.m. for family and friends. The theme will be "One Night In Paris". All students are encouraged to participate, please call us at 570-996-1500 to register. |
