At The Dietrich

By
Esther Harmatz

It’s really quite a personal honor that Hildy has entrusted me to guest-write her column this week. I don’t think anyone else can quite capture the enthusiasm and style with which she reports all the things we are planning at the Dietrich each week. Her love of our theater ,her devotion and sincere efforts to continually keep things exciting and current always shows through whenever she writes. I’ve traveled all over the country ,through hundreds of small towns ( I love getting off the beaten paths)and I think we are soooooo fortunate to have a theater like The Dietrich right here in our hometown. You just don’t see that very much anymore, and it’s a shame. Thanks to Hildy and Margie,(our cultural program goddess ) the Dietrich has become an exceptional and unique gem as far as theaters go, and that is no small accomplishment!

Now—on to this week’s movies ! Opening tonight is the mesmerizing,pulse-pounding political action thriller THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE starring Denzel Washington, Meryl Streep and Liev Schrieber. Although based on the 1959 Richard Condon novel, and loosely reminiscent of the 1962 movie of the same name, this version has been updated and replaces ‘Commie Reds’ with ‘Corporate Greed ‘ and political conspiracies which ,in today’s world, are no longer viewed as pure imagination. The fast paced action and all-star cast should provide a good evening’s entertainment !

For Saturday and Sunday matinee we will be showing TWO BROTHERS, the beautifully filmed movie starring two magnificent tiger cubs! This family-oriented movie features the cubs who are endearingly cute, and manage to upstage the usual variety of human friends and foes. Of course the movie has all the stereotypical characters and plots that befall the tiger cubs as they are separated from each other early in their lives, find themselves growing up in various predicaments and are eventually re-united through a surprising turn of events. There are only a few brief sad moments, but if you’ve made it through Bambi, you’ll be just fine and there are so many charmingly cute, humorous scenes that you’ll be smiling all the way home. TWO BROTHERS will be here next weekend also. Many critics have said this is one of the best family entertainment flicks to come out in a long time!

There’s also a few more days to catch The Princess Diaries 2 starring Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews. It’s a rolicking young romantic comedy , with fun at every turn! So,,girls grab your friends (and moms!) and come for some laughs, giggles and warm fuzzy feelings! This is a great chick flick!

I’m hoping that next week we might,(and I stress “might”) be able to bring in “Napoleon Dynamite” and “Garden State”, two independent films which have become sleeper hits. We’ll see what our Jeffrey can do with this request.

Our Second Annual Fall Film Festival is fast approaching. September 10 is just around the corner and what a fantastic lineup of movies Hildy and Jeffrey have assembled! Tickets for our opening night gala are already selling like hotcakes, so if you want to get in on an exciting evening of film AND food call 996-1500 for details and reservations. For all the other nights of the festival no reservations are needed and I highly urge and encourage you to try seeing something different! Don’t be one of those fuddy-duddies who totally rules out any movie with subtitles, because you are depriving yourself of many unique visual experiences and outlooks filmed by some of the world’s best current film-makers. Again, this is truly amazing event for a small town theater to be hosting. The Dietrich Theater is well on its way to becoming Northeast Pennsylvania’s premiere Art Theater.! Don’t be left out of the loop!(Film loop, of course!)

Congratulations to our raffle winners: Chrissy Schoonover,Grant Carpenter, Mark Henn, Pam Wilmot, Dori Waters, Robin Rome, Sadie Jones, John Eidenier, and Judy Harvey.

Hopefully Hildy will be back at the keyboard by next issue!

She sends a sincere “Thank You” to all those who wrote with words of encouragement.

“See you at the Dietrich!”

Live at The Dietrich

By

What a night of true Tennessee bluegrass music! The August 25th Tennessee HeartStrings Band concert at the Dietrich was the event to be at. There was standing room only and electricity filled the air. Bo Jamison and her band’s performance could only be described as true artistry. As a former resident of Tunkhannock for 13 years, Bo Jamison’s friends, family and former colleagues all came out to support Heartstrings making the event a true love fest. We encourage you pick up a brochure at the theater or check out our website www.dietrichtheater.com to learn more about other events at the Dietrich.

Now that school is back in swing, the Dietrich will be hosting great art classes for kids of all ages. There will be a Mixed Media class taught by Steve and Amy Colley where children will have the opportunity to explore art through the use of charcoal and pencil, watercolors and clay. You should definitively stop by our art studio to see some of the works of art that previous students have created! I’m always amazed at what those little talented hands can produce. Classes will be offered on Mondays from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm for ages 9 – 12 and on Fridays from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm for ages 5 – 8. Admission is $25 total for a series of four classes. Please call the Dietrich at 996-1500 to sign up. Two sessions of Art Class for Preschoolers will also start the week of September 13th. Give your four or five year olds a chance to experiment with clay, collage, and tempera as they create unique works of art and make new friends too! Classes will be held on Mondays and Thursdays at 12:00 pm – 12:45 pm. Admission is $25 for four Mondays or four Thursdays.

The Dietrich Theater is also bringing back Michaela Moore for acting classes for students ages 11 – 17. In this Introduction to Acting class, participants will focus on the technique of acting with a performance at the end of class. Students will learn about storytelling and the basic techniques of acting including voice, body, mind and imagination. She works with kids of all experience levels and their performances are quite good. If you had the opportunity to catch her students’ last play at the Dietrich this past spring, “Teenage Turns”, which the group wrote, blocked and acted in, you would have been quite surprised to see what those young thespians accomplished and learned about the theater arts in five short months. This time around, Introduction to Acting will be on Tuesdays at 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm from September 28 to November 16th. Please call the theater at 996-1500 to preregister. Admission is $60 for eight weeks of classes.

Coming up on October 2nd, the Dietrich Theater will take part in Tunkhannock’s Airing of the quilts with two live performances by Seven Quilts for Seven Sisters. The first show at 11:00 am on October 2nd, “A Stitch in Time” will take you back to the old south and days of slavery in a performance featuring song, dance, history, stories, skits, and quilts. At 2:00 pm, in “Stitching in Time with Song” the Sisters through the use of songs and quilts share the secret communication used during the slave era in this country. Tickets are $10.00 per show and can be reserved by calling 996-1500 or can be purchased at the Dietrich or at Endless Mountains Quiltworks. These shows are great for everyone – quilters or nonquilters alike!
