At The Dietrich

Okay. I’ve said this many times before in this column, but what a crazy business! You could not be the sort of person who has to map things out to survive show biz (or our little tiny version of it). For the last three weeks Universal has said we absolutely could not have “Man of the Year.” No way. Too small. (No “Mighty Dietrich” stuff for them.) No, no, no!

So Monday morning we did our schedule with another week of The Guardian and a second-run movie and at two o’clock Jeffrey called. Universal was letting us open Man of the Year! Just like that! Old ads get ripped up, new ads inserted. Whoa.

But we are very, very happy. I’m a big, big fan of Robin Williams. He’s so talented and funny and manic and sad. All the things that are incorporated in a great comic. And it seems to me that this is a very good time for a movie about politics. Our political system seems to me to be more endangered right now than at any time in our history. It seems that regular nice folks get themselves elected, go to Washington and become someone else entirely! I think it was Leno the other night who suggested we change the capitol location. I’m not sure that isn’t a good idea.

So what better time to bring you a movie about a comic elected to the presidency? An accidental president, for sure, but with Williams at the helm, it promises to be a very funny one. So come out to the movies, folks, and get a good laugh at the expense of the Washingtonians who only really pay any attention to us on the eve of their re-elections. This movie will go exceptionally well with the best popcorn in the east, so give it a try. Sometimes, you know, when things are as bad as they seem they can be, laughter really is the best medicine!

We have another week of The Guardian, which is really pretty good for the kind of movie it is. And really, I wouldn’t mind spending a couple of bucks to spend two hours with Kevin Costner. (And I guess if you’re younger, it’s Ashton Kucher who would be the draw.)

Many of you have asked me about The Queen starring Helen Mirren. I can’t wait to see it, and we WILL be bringing it in, but not until January. The reason for that is that it is an art film and in limited release, but by January we will be able to get it. So wait for it at the Dietrich if you possibly can because I absolutely promise it will play here. Same for Flags of Our Fathers – we will most likely play it in January, but once again, we WILL play it.

Perhaps you would like to know the film line-up (as much as I can tell you because it’s never absolute until it’s booked) from now thru the holidays. If we get our druthers and all goes well, here are the films that will be with us in the coming months: Man of the Year, Flushed Away, The Santa Clause 3, Happy Feet, The Nativity, Night at the Museum and Charlotte’s Web. Not a bad line-up for a small town theater.

So don’t forget that the first weekend in November we will be having the arts fair at the fire hall. It will include some of the most talented local artisans in the area, and it is a perfect time to buy unique Christmas presents. When you buy at something like this you are really giving two gifts – the first, of course, is to the person you are buying for. But the second gift is your support of the arts and the wonderful men and women who are the creatives (I just made up that word I think) in the community. Friday night, November 3, there will be a preview and wine and goodies to eat, and you can buy ahead of the Saturday crowd. So do give a call to 996-1500 to reserve your place for a wonderful evening with the artists and their creations.

And you have a good week, now. Snow flurries by the end of the week! Ooooh! I can’t wait!

See you at the Dietrich.

Last week I took the Intro to Feng Shui class here at the Dietrich. Instructor Sybilla Lenz did a great job of explaining its basic principles. I think I might try applying some of those ideas. Many of them seemed practical. Sybilla will be back next Wednesday, October 18th at 7:00 pm for Advanced Feng Shui. In this class, students will learn how to apply elements for reinforcing Feng Shui basics as well as understanding the principles of ying/yang for encouraging great health. Introduction to Feng Shui is not a prerequisite for this workshop. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 for details or to register.

Our Willow Basketry and Holiday Crafts classes have started up at the Dietrich. We are so glad to have Bonnie Gale, professional basket maker, here for these classes. She uses traditional techniques for making baskets. Margie Young, the Dietrich’s Program Director, took Bonnie’s basketry class when she taught at the Dietrich in 2004 and is taking this new basketry series. Students will make a Danish Fruit Basket and a Thanksgiving Bread Basket. In Holiday Crafts students will make a variety of traditional items, most of them woven. Students will make wreaths, a woven willow star, woven tree ornaments and beeswax candles. There is still time to sign up for these classes. Willow Basketry will be held on Thursdays from 7:00 - 8:30 pm through November 9th and Holiday Crafts will also be held on Thursdays from 4:30 - 6:00 pm through November 9th as well.

Now if you like arts and crafts, but don’t have time to make your own, the Dietrich has the Festival of Fine Arts and Crafts coming up on November 3rd and 4th at the Banquet Hall of Triton Hose Company. We will host a Preview Night on the 3rd from 5:30 - 9:00 pm of this unique marketplace full of handcrafted items by fine, juried artists and artisans just in time for holiday gift giving. Take this opportunity to browse our market place and make one-of-a-kind purchases as well as visit friends over wine and hors d’oeuvres. It will be a great night out. Preview night tickets are $10 and can be reserved by calling the Dietrich at 570-996-1500. Additional marketplace hours will be held on Saturday, November 4th from 10 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Admission is $2, children under 12, free.

Last week, I mentioned the Festival of Fine Arts and Crafts featured exhibitor La Provencale Cellars, who make sparkling apple cider and spreads, and Patti and Adam Hozempa of P.A. Designs. This week I ‘d like to tell you about a few more festival artists. Metal smith Donald Shelton of Factoryville will be there with his exceptional metal work. He creates pieces that are reminiscent of techniques used in times past, but with a modern slant. He makes elegant lamps, tables and smaller pieces sure to compliment any home décor.

Claire Morrow of Scranton will also be at the show. Claire took up colorful knitting after she retired. She has always loved working with textures and colors, and as a grandmother of five, uses her skill to create unique children’s sweater’s in fanciful designs sure to delight children, moms and grandmothers alike.

Mark and Dorothy Gibson of Dorrance will bring two unique areas of expertise to the show. They will display their 100% handcrafted beeswax candles know as the healthiest and most romantic candles in the world. The second part of their display will feature their all-natural soaps, pure essential oils, and perfume oils to help the body rebuild, rejuvenate and restore.

And for families, we hope to see you and your young ones at the Dietrich tomorrow for “Fun for Tots: Stories and Songs with Mary Baker” at 10:30 - 11:30 am, and on Saturday at 11 am for a Tracks and Tracking Event with the Wyoming County Conservation District.
