At The Dietrich

Hildy Morgan

Oh, dear friends, I wish you all could have been with us on Friday night. It was one of those rare moments of transcendence when it seems as if the planets and the stars and the moon are all so properly aligned that there is a rare moment of perfection right here on earth. The food was divine (thanks to Epicurean Delight and Twigs – both of whom prepare food as art), the films brilliant, the company divine. Our Jeffrey came to introduce the films and did so brilliantly as always. And the thing I remember most, far above and beyond anything else during the evening, is the feeling of excitement and happiness that comes from those in attendance. What good friends we all are – even when we don’t know each other. We are all there because we love the movies, good food, wine, laughter, art, and each other. How special that night is – and how extra special this one seemed to be. It was as if the light came not from mundane electricity, but from a thousand million stars. Lovely. Simply lovely.

So, I have managed to see ten of the sixteen movies so far. I intend to see them all before festival is over. Every one has been excellent, but there is one that simply blew me away. I thought The Painted Veil to be one of the finest movies I’ve seen in many years. Not only is it superb cinematography, and exquisite costuming, and the most brilliant acting you will ever see, but it is an old fashioned novel of a movie. It moves slowly, introducing you to the characters in modest increments, letting you decide about them as you make their acquaintance. And by doing it in such a way you realize you care about what happens to these people – you not only care, you care deeply. It is a film about love and betrayal, about redemption and grace. Could there be themes more appealing than that? Do make time in your busy schedule to see this film. It is well worth your time and you will think of it often long after the lights have come up and the music has faded. I intend to see it at least once more. At least.

I thought The Good German was a noble experiment that doesn’t quite work, but it is fascinating and I’m so glad I saw it. It made me want to read the book (Joseph Kanon is a terrific writer) because I suspect that the book centers more on the morality of survival than on the mystery. Cinematography is superb! I loved Little Children – cleverly done, much to think about. Notes On A Scandal is tough – sad characters and much bad behavior afoot. It’s great fun to see Judy Densch being incredibly, irredeemably horrible. Good movie.

If God Grew Tired Of Us doesn’t give you pause about American value systems, nothing ever will. These young men want so little from life and work so hard, and are so decent and come from such utter horror that it is both tragic and uplifting at the same time. And you know that God could never have grown tired of them – he would have been too charmed. The Italian is superb, but boy oh boy, does it show Russia as one tough country. Ooooh. Makes you shiver that people seem so, well…disposable. But it has a great ending and the child who plays the “Italian” is a terrific actor. It’s a wonderful film and you root for him all the way. China Blue is tough. It makes you so sad, but the flaw I found with it is that it doesn’t tell you what, if anything, you can do about it. I would gladly buy jeans made in America, but it doesn’t seem that that would actually help. That might give Americans work, but it wouldn’t help the Chinese slave laborers. I wish they would have talked aobut what could be done to help them. Copying Beethoven is a delight, and the scene where the symphony is performed makes it worth the price of admission. Everyone in the audience loved Venus but me, but I think it’s well worth seeing although I didn’t care for it at all. However, as I said, others liked it a lot!

Amazing Grace this week. So we have wonderful movies for you. Just wonderful. (That’s because we like you so much.)

See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

Erica Rogler

It is fantastic to be in the middle of our film festival and to see so many of you at the Dietrich enjoying great foreign, independent, and art films. I can’t believe we are featuring 16 movies in this short amount of time –what fun! We can’t thank our projectionists enough for all of their hard work during festivals. Putting up, taking down and moving all of those films can be a challenge, but I must say they are an efficient crew and handle everything so smoothly. We hope you will join us for more films during our second week of festival.

Our Dietrich Theater Radio Players have been busily rehearsing for their upcoming spring radio plays. We have a great group led by Valerie Paulus, and for their spring show (Tuesday, May 22 at 7 pm), they have decided to perform a favorite episode of the Burns and Allen Show and an episode of Suspense Theater called “The House in Cypress Canyon”.

Also coming up in May will be another jewelry class with our Esther Harmatz. By popular request, on May 14th from 6:00 – 9:00 pm, she will teach an introduction to glass fusing class. Students ages 18 and up are invited to take part in this very basic introduction to the process of small-piece fused glasswork. Each student will create a fused glass item, which will be finished, polished and wire wrapped. The pendants students have made in past classes are beautiful. Admission is $50 for the class and includes materials. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 to sign up.

Last week I told you about our summer theatre and visual arts camps, now let me tell you about some of our other camps. For teenagers, we will host a weeklong theater workshop with Carl Canedy and Patti Dunning of First Act Children’s Theatre. During the week of June 25 – 29 from 10 am – noon, students will learn about some of the exciting aspects of theatre including stage combat, improv, dance choreography and more! Carl and Patti direct our After School Players group during the months of January through March. We are delighted that they will be with us for some summer theatre fun. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 for more information.

For younger thespians, the Dietrich will offer two acting camps over the summer. In these camps, children ages 6 – 11 will be able to use their wonderful imaginations and learn all about acting and theater. Under the guidance, of Michaela Moore of All About Theatre, campers will take part in activities that cover acting techniques, theater games, improvisation, storytelling, play making, character creation and more. Student will be able to share what they learned through a casual performance at the end of the week if time allows. Our first camp will be held June 18 –22 from 1:00 – 2:30 pm and our second camp will be held August 6 –10 from 1:00 – 2:30 pm. Each camp will feature a completely different story and characters. Admission is $50 per camp. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 for more information or to register.

This summer, we will also host an art camp, which surrounds a great artist –“Leonardo Da Vinci – His Life and Ideas”. Under the instruction of artist-in-residence Amy Colley, students will learn about Da Vinci’s interests and accomplishments as they sketch birds and other animals, try mirror writing, make a lute and even learn a little Italian! Camp will be held the week of July 30 – August 3. Children ages 6 –12 are invited to attend. Call the Dietrich for more information.
