At The Dietrich

Well. We were feelin’ soooo gooood! Oh, yeah. The old broads had a film festival with outstanding attendance. Outstanding! Way beyond the last two festivals. We were definitely struttin’ our stuff - high fivin’ it, lots of thumbs up. Oh yeah. We are woman, hear us roar! (Or whatever.) And then old Mother Nature came along and said “Hey, girlfriends – you want to hear a roar? You want to feel real power? Heh. Heh. Heh.”

Sigh. The rain that was Ivan just kept coming. And coming. And coming. At first when a state of emergency was declared on Saturday we just didn’t really get it. We didn’t understand that the entire county would soon be shut down. We didn’t understand that before the day was over there would essentially be no way in or out of Tunkhannock. So we kept trying to figure out how we would reschedule films, how we would deal with the rising waters. We were desperate to stay open because we had all those festival films. The phone was ringing off the hook – people wanting to know whether or not we would be open, whether or not they could get here from Wilkes-Barre and Dallas and Scranton.

Finally, there was no way around it. The water was rising, step by step, from the cellar toward the Evans. We simply had to admit defeat to a force far mightier than we, close it up and wait for the water to do its’ thing. And, nasty as that old river water is, we got lucky, because the river crested and started to retreat a foot or two before it go into the Evans. Sure, it left its unpleasant calling card of muck and icky stuff, but that’s just the cellar, not the theater. We can live with that.

Frantic Monday morning. Jeffrey and I are on the phone back and forth trying to reschedule with all those little film companies. And guess what? Most of them agreed to let us have the films for one more week! So, the festival continues and everyone will get a chance to see the best festival films ever. I’m so glad because I haven’t been able to catch them all and now I’ll be able to see most of them. I’ve really liked what I’ve seen so far. I loved “Bon Voyage” – very Preston Sturgess 1930’s, and I thought “I’m Not Scared” was the scariest film ever. I thought “Control Room” was very interesting – the young Marine in it is simply America at its very best. I can’t wait to see “Supersize Me” and “Goodbye Lenin” and “Since Otar Left” among others. Plus everyone who saw “The Weeping Camel” just loved it so I have scheduled it for a number of extra showings.

Thus, all is well. The festival will be on for one more week and then we show two big blockbuster films – “Shark Tales” and “Ladder 49” – both opening on October 1! (That should make for an exciting weekend!)

In the Murray we have a Rashomon type movie called “Hero” which is for those who love the martial arts. It has gotten excellent reviews so if martial arts are your bag, come give this one a try.

Now don’t forget about the Quilting live show called “Seven Quilts for Seven Sisters” on the Dietrich stage Saturday October 2. It’s a goodie, folks. I promise you that.

So, that’s about all the news form the formerly flooded Dietrich which is now bone-dry and ready for action. So, come on down to see some of the best films ever. It’s been a trying week here, but we made it. So walk on in and say “hey” and keep us company. The popcorn’s fresh and hot and just waiting for you.

See you at the Dietrich

Live at The Dietrich

While the extended fall film festival is winding down, the big blockbuster movie and cultural event season is just starting up at the Dietrich Theater. We have been having great turnouts for our yoga and art classes for adults. Steve Colley’s Pottery and Sculpture and Mixed Media/Portfolio prep classes continue to grow. If you stop by the Dietrich’s Dorothy G. Sheldon Art Studio, you will see the earthenware some of his students have made. In Eileen Balboa’s Decorative Painting Class, students are busy creating great decorative pieces and gifts. Classes and events will get even better as we go into October!

To start out the month, live theater performances of Seven Quilts for Seven Sisters will be coming to the Dietrich stage on October 2nd. These shows are a great opportunity to explore history and art with the entire family. At 11 am, the Sisters will perform “A Stitch in Time” which will showcase song, dance, history, skits and quilts from the days of the old south and “Stitching in Time with Song” at 2 pm will feature the secret communication used by slaves through songs and quilts. Tickets are $10 per show and can be purchased by calling (570)-996-1500. Along with these performances, the Dietrich Theater will be hosting an antique quilt exhibit in the Earnshaw Gallery. A variety of other quilts will also be displayed along Tioga Street for Tunkhannock’s 3rd Annual Airing of the Quilts. Don’t miss out!

Then on Monday, October 4th at 7:00 pm, historian, Dr. Sheldon Spear, will give a presentation at the Tunkhannock Public Library on America’s Earliest Inhabitants. Based on evidence found, new theories about America’s Earliest Inhabitants have been formed. Please call Margie Young at (570)-996-1500 for more information.

Not to leave the kids out - on Tuesdays, October 5th through November 2nd from 4:00 pm –5:00 pm, Everhart Art Experiments for fourth through sixth graders will kickoff at the theater. This well-loved class is taught by Everhart Museum Staff and admission is free. Your children can get their creative juices flowing as they play with paints, pastels, and colors galore! Call (570)-996-1500 to register.

Mary Baker, local singer and storyteller, will also be back at the Dietrich this fall with her “Fun for Tots: Stories and Songs for 3 to 5 Year Olds”. On Thursdays, October 7th through October 28th from 10:30 am – 11:30 am, enjoy singing, dancing and listening to stories with your preschoolers. A parent or caregiver must accompany children and admission is free.

Then, Saturday, October 9th, from 11:00 am – noon, George Wesley, local reggae singer/songwriter will be at the Dietrich for a jam session with your family. Everyone is invited to bring their instruments and play along. Admission is free.

As you can see, I’ve only gotten to tell you about the first nine days of October –there is more to come!
