At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

I need to tell you about something sort of scary and hear from you if any of you have noticed something similar. I’ve been hearing all this talk about the number of honeybees declining, but I didn’t think a lot about it. But now it’s hit close to home and it’s frankly making my stomach hurt. As most of you know, I live in an old, old farmhouse in South Auburn and snuggled next to the house are two of the largest and most glorious rhododendron bushes I’ve ever seen. Since we moved here thirteen years ago, when the bushes would bloom you could hear them as well as see them. They were alive with bumblebees. It was as if the bush were humming its own tune. This year I counted six bees. Not hundreds. Six. The bushes are silent.

I don’t know what we’re doing to harm these most important of God’s creatures, but we sure better find out and find out soon. I’ve heard some think it’s pesticides. So, no matter what the economic impact, we need to stop using it. Some say it’s about cell phone towers. Then let’s go back to landlines. I don’t know what it is, but I know it’s a much quieter summer here in the Auburns and that can’t be good. Einstein said that should the bees ever disappear the human race has four years. I want a lot more time than that, so we’d best get on it, don’t you think?

Write and tell me if you’ve noticed a dearth of bees at your flowers and shrubs. I don’t think we can wait for our paralyzed politicians to solve this one. I think we need to get on it ourselves. I just don’t know what to do. What to do.

So, on the topic of movies, CNN this week wrote a piece that perfectly explains why we need to add a screen or two. “By the second weekend of a blockbuster,” CNN wrote, most people who wanted to see the movie have seen it.” And then it’s over. Pirates, after its huge opening, dropped 67% the second weekend. But we’re stuck with it for two more weeks. As is the cinemark. The difference is that they tuck the old films in another theater and bring in something new. We can’t bring in anything new for another week, so we look ahead to a grim fourth week of Shrek and third week of Pirates. It makes for some tense financing, believe me. We need those new screens to even out those peaks and valleys we’ve been living with for six years. It’s unbelievably stressful! And the thing is, we want to bring you the latest in movie entertainment. We love seeing you come bounding in the theater, excited and happy to be seeing Hollywood’s latest offering. But the rules of the game are stringent and there’s no point in complaining about them. The distributors make the rules and we have to abide by them. So, that’s one of the main reasons we need to add on. To make us secure. To keep you happy. (Now, those are pretty good reasons, don’t you thnk?)

Attention writers! Attention writers! (Or readers or anyone who’s ever had a book or …well…you get it.) Charlee Ganny is doing a writer’s workshop/book signing on July 28th. Bring the first page of your novel to be critiqued. Come learn about “Writing What You Know”, and come to spend some quality time with a very successful and delightful author. Charlee is just a doll and she has a truly generous heart. Her new book, “Careful What You Wish For” is delightful (as are all her books) and is set in Noxen! Yeah. Noxen! How cool is that???? The Romantic Times Review (a big deal) said, among other things, that “Careful What You Wish For” is warm, funny, heartwrenching and mysterious.” They loved it. So will you. The workshop runs from 12:30 until 2:30 followed by her book signing. It’s free to all, but do call 996-1500 since we have limited space. (And come prepared to buy your very own signed copy of the book. Or bring your own copy and she’ll be glad to sign it.) Just coming to the signing is fine, too. We just hope to see you there.

And don’t forget Celebrate our River Day. I’ll talk a lot about that next week. And about the GREAT bluegrass band that’s played all over the world and is coming to T’town for that day!

So much to write about. So little space. Sigh.

See you at the Dietrich!

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

I think Margie said it perfectly when she pronounced that this would be “a summer of good music”. We will start our music festivities off with “Celebrate Our River Day” in Tunkhannock’s Riverside Park on July 21st from 2-5 pm. Musicians featured include Al Purdy and John Williams of Brother John and Hickory Project. Brother John has been a local favorite for years. We are also very excited that Hickory Project will play at the park. I must tell you they are an amazing bluegrass group. We listened to their CD “Polaris” in the office and love it! They are a globally acclaimed band that plays hard-driving traditional and original bluegrass music and have toured in Europe, Australia and throughout the United States. One of their band members is a National Mandolin Champion and another is a Florida Fiddle Champion. To learn more about Hickory Project, visit http//:hickoryproject.com. Now who can resist a beautiful day in the park with some great music? And admission is free!

Then in August, the Dietrich will host Gathering of Singers and Songwriters 6. On Wednesday, August 15th at 7:30 pm, come out for an evening of folk music. We are so delighted to have some our favorite artists come back for it! The concert will feature Kate and CJ, Tom Flannery and Lorne Clarke. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 for more information.

This past week I was able to stop in and see the projects that Intergenerational Quilting students made as they wrapped up their spring session. Their quilts were so beautiful and colorful. What I was even more excited to see was how all the students interacted and the overall atmosphere of the class. You could immediately tell these students weren’t just learning the art of quilting but friendships had formed – half of the bubbling chatter in the room was quilting related and the other half were conversations about each others everyday lives. We would like to thank our instructors Peggy Lane, Ingrid Rogler, and Terry Keller who selflessly volunteer their time every week to teach quilting at the theater. They do a marvelous job.

And join us this summer for Acting Camp for Kids with Michaela Moore of All About Theatre. This is a great camp for students ages 6 -11 to use their creativity as they learn about the theatre arts. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 for more information or to sign up.
