At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

What a night! What a completely, totally, wondrously, fabulous night! And what a night of mixed emotions! Our hearts were simply broken for our dear friends Cliff and Carla and David and Roberta at Epicurean Delight. They have been with us since the beginning of the festivals and the thought of doing gala night without them was almost unbearable.

On the other hand, Jerry and Lori Bogedin simply pulled a rabbit out of a hat and saved us. They were superb, and, I think, up all night the night before as they prepared exquisite and gorgeous bites of this and tastes of that, that, when combined, satisfied the most hearty appetite. I don’t know how they did it, but, bless their hearts, they did. This town should be very, very grateful that the Bogedin’s live here and have their business here. They are young entrepreneurs who really “get it” – the “it” being how to run a successful business and understanding the forces that make it so successful. They are dreams to work with – cooperative, charming, and efficient. If Lori and Jerry tell you they are going to do something, then by heavens you can take that to the bank. And I think that was proven by the fact that Wednesday afternoon they told us not to worry, that they would take care of everything. And they did. In spades! We can never thank them enough for what they did for us. They did no less than saved the night. How cool is that?

And they got a little help from our dear new neighbors, Kathy and Bruce Arrowood whose gorgeous new restaurant, Seasons, has done nothing less than bring class to the entire street. Everything they’ve done has the look of city chic, and it helps bring sparkle and light to the town. And then, besides how beautiful their business is, there is the matter of the simply superb and delicious food they prepared for us. Four of the most heavenly dishes I’ve had in a long time. Beef to die for, and a pear salad so unique and refreshing that I’m sure they are going to be selling a ton of it once they open their doors. And one addendum to this – they hadn’t even opened their restaurant at the time! They cooked for us and presented gorgeous food and they hadn’t even opened. They are such hard workers and good sports. Bless their hearts and many thanks.

Isn’t it delightful to live in such a great town that we could have two young families here who understand good food and love people and are such hard workers? Twigs is a mainstay here and I think Seasons will soon join them as a dining destination in beautiful downtown T’town.

Speaking of our beautiful little town – I was coming to work on Sunday night about 6:45 and the town was full of people! Sunday night! I realized they were all festival attendees and they were walking up the street toward Twigs and many of them were looking in shop windows and talking. On Saturday we were asked why the shops were closed. I bring this up to say to our businesses downtown, even if you’re not open late on Saturday or Sundays the rest of the year, open for festival weekends. Do movie specials. Sell your wares. Because the folks who come to festival have a good deal of disposable income and they are charmed by the town and the quaint little shops. Take advantage of that and be open for festival. Give it a chance and I bet you will see a good return for your investment. Just a suggestion, but a lot of the folks who came here on Saturday and Sunday were in a between-movies-shopping-mood. Next time, be ready for them.

The movies have been so great and we’re drawing bigger crowds than ever! Don’t miss The Namesake, or Black Book or Sicko or La Vie en Rose and do come to meet John Dobson. Isn’t festival time just the greatest????

See you at the Dietrich!

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

This first week of festival went by so quickly! Thank goodness we have a second week of films, so I have a chance to see some of the movies I have been meaning to get to. And please join us this Sunday at the Dietrich for a very special event! Astronomer John Dobson will be here for a Q&A at 6 pm. Dobson is a world known astronomer, made famous for inventing the Dobsonian telescope mount. This mount made astronomy accessible to amateur astronomers. Admission to the Q&A is $10 and all proceeds will be given to John Dobson. Before the Q&A, the Dietrich will show the film A Sidewalk Astronomer at 4:30 pm, which is a documentary about John Dobson.

Then on Sunday, September 30th at 2 pm and 7 pm, we will celebrate libraries and librarians with two showings of The Hollywood Librarian. In this documentary, the role of librarians is explored in the age of technology. Librarians’ job responsibilities are very different from how they are portrayed in movies. What makes this documentary even more special to us is that Susan Turrell, Tunkhannock Public Library Director, as well as Pat Trowbridge and Judy Cooper of the Tunkhannock Public Library are featured in the film. For ticket information, call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500.

And WNEP’s Mike Stevens will be at the Dietrich for a presentation about his many adventures on the Pennsylvania Road on Wednesday, October 3rd at 7:00 pm. He will share with us some of the side roads and country roads he’s found over the past twenty-five years. For more information, call 570-996-1500.

And mark your calendars, Saturday, October 6th is Airing of the Quilts in Tunkhannock. This will definitely be a day to take a drive through Tunkhannock. Colorful quilts will be decoratively draped and hung from houses and businesses along business Route 6 in Tunkhannock. The Dietrich will be taking part in the day’s festivities by hosting a fabulous quilt exhibit in our Earnshaw Gallery and a presentation by quilting author Rachel Pellman called Amish Women and Their Quilts in the Evan’s Theater at 11 am. This presentation will give a historical basis for quilts and will place them within the social fabric of Amish women’s lives. Rachel will provide factual information on antique Amish quilts along with colorful stories and experiences to make the quilts come alive. Admission is $5 per person. Tickets can be purchased at the Dietrich Theater ticket booth or by calling 570-996-1500.
