At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

This is such a crazy business! One day I think I have the schedule planned for the next couple of weeks and then – bam! – I don’t! So here’s what I thought. I thought that I was giving up Fred Claus and bringing in Bella, a quite lovely pro-life film that many people had asked me for. I made phone calls to alert people and let them know it was coming. Then, on the weekend, Fred Claus picked up like some movie zombie, arose out of its moribund state and became a hit! So I couldn’t let it go. The movie company made it very plain that if we were to drop it we would never see another film from their studio again. Ooops. So then I had to call those same people to tell them Bella won’t be in until, most likely, January.

Then this morning I get a note from Jeffrey saying that he thinks he can get it in the second week in December for us. Or something. So, now I have no actual idea when it will be in. Maybe December. Maybe January. The point is, though, that I promise I’ll bring it in. I really have been trying!

What a confusing season this has been. There hasn’t been a really big hit which makes me pretty nervous. Christmas and summertime are when we make the money that sees us through the rest of the year, so a hitless Christmas is a fear-inspiring event. Now, I still think that National Treasure 2 is going to be big and I’m quite hopeful about Golden Compass. Speaking of which, Hollywood has saved God (according to the headline in the Atlantic this month) by removing all religion and religions references from the book when they moved the story to the silver screen. And when they make the other two films out of the series, they also will be devoid of religious references. They are just quest movies – the kind that kids have loved since the dawn of time. And the trailers on it are phenomenal!

So, It’s A Wonderful Life will play at 2:00 and at 7:00 on December 18th. Mark that day to join us as we say thank-you to the community that is so good to us all year round. We are going to change the rules just a tad this year. We got a little lax last year and upset some folks (we never mean to do that, it just sometimes turns out that way). What happened was that some folks came to get their tix before they went for supper and we let them have them. Naturally, when the line started to form the people standing there got angry as the dinner people walked in with their tix. So this year, you have to come an hour before, first come first served, and that’s it. We do our best with the movie and this is our best shot. The theater will open an hour before the film is to show and no advanced tix will be given. That makes it fair for everyone. And we want to include as many people as we can, as the theater will hold. It’s the one day of the year I wish the theater were twice its size!

Remember our gift bags! The greatest gift! All gift-wrapped, all duded up for the holidays, all set to make the recipient very, very happy. All you business owners who would like to remember your employees with a little special something, please think of the Dietrich when it comes time to choose a gift. And for folks who have everything – what lovelier gift than a night at the movies? And if you want to get really spectacular, give our gift bag and a certificate to one of our terrific local restaurants. Dinner and a movie. How much better does it get than that? And that keeps your holiday bucks local. It’s important to remember that the downtown merchants are your friends and neighbors and they need your support, especially at this time of year.

Special Kudos to our Sarah who has outdone herself this year with our gorgeous decorations. Isn’t she just grand?

See you at the Dietrich!

Live at The Dietrich

I love walking into the Dietrich during the holidays. It is like being transported into a winter wonderland. So much time, creativity, and care is put into decorating the theater. We’d especially like to thank Sarah Sidorek, Stephen and Calista Hendrickson, our staff and many volunteers for all of their hard work. Stephen is a professional set designer and Calista was a costume designer for the Muppets. You will have to stop in and see their Enchanted Christmas exhibit in the Earnshaw Gallery; it is so whimsical. I especially love the enchanted sleigh ride and circus displays.

Looking to Christmas in Our Home Town on Friday, December 7th at 5:30 pm and 7:00 pm, we will be offering two free showings of Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas. This is such a dear Christmas movies loved by children and adults. And Calista Hendrickson who was the costume designer for the movie will be there to introduce it.

And then on Saturday, December 8th, the Dietrich will continue celebrating Christmas in Our Home Town with our Holiday Workshop from 11 am – 12:30 pm. Bill Frye will kick the workshop off with a sing-along of favorite holiday songs. Then children and families will have the opportunity to make ornaments, decorate Christmas cookies and have Silly Sally make them their own balloon creations. Admission is free.

Then on Tuesday, December 18th at 2 pm and 7 pm, the Dietrich will host its annual free showings of “It’s a Wonderful Life”. It is fun to see how many people come out to enjoy this classic movie. I love how at the end on the film everyone joins in singing “Auld Lang Syne” and applauds. It is definitely a special day at the Dietrich. Besides free admission, popcorn and soda are free too. Seating is limited, so come early. We’d like to thank the Tunkhannock United Methodist Church for sponsoring “It’s a Wonderful Life”.
