At The Dietrich

Hildy Morgan

Boy oh boy, do we have two goodies for you this week! Jeffrey had booked these movies a week ago before the Golden Globes were announced, so it is pure icing on the cake that both were Golden Globe nominees and one, Atonement, was the Best picture winner.

Let’s start with the most delightful picture to hit the silver screen since Little Miss Sunshine. If you go to my favorite movie site on the net – rottentomatoes.com – and pull up Juno, you will see almost universally positive reviews, something that is rare on the rottentomatoes site! Juno is the story of a bright, sassy sixteen year old who ends up pregnant and decides to have the baby and give it up for adoption. Her parents are loving and supportive as Juno wends her sweet young way through the perils of pregnancy. This is a crowd-pleasing movie, and one that will leave you cheering and delighted. It has a PG-13 rating, but I think most teens will respond to its honesty and humor. In fact, I would suggest that if you have a free night, why don’t you come with your teen and see it? What a wonderful family discussion can be had after those credits roll. In fact, let’s up the ante on this – why don’t you take your teens to see this movie and then go out to one of our terrific little restaurants and have some hot chocolate and a snack and sit and talk about what you saw, what your family values are (same or different from Juno’s family) and how you would have handled the same circumstances. And, of course, how you would try prevent those circumstances happening to your family. Movies are the most wonderful catalysts for good, meaningful conversation. And it’s always been my experience that teens love to talk to us about what matters to them if we will just take the time to listen.

Atonement, playing in the Murray, is a gorgeous story about lovers separated by a lie, and then a war, and then….well…you have to come see for yourself. The movie is about creativity, jealousy, wickedness, love, grace, and redemption. It is worth seeing for the cinematography alone, but the story is enthralling. It’s actually the sort of film that in another year we would play at the festival, but because it is playing on a wide release, we decided to bring it in for you now. Besides, we need something gorgeous to look at during the gray days of January.

So you can see that this week is one of those rarities when we have two worthy films for you to see and absorb. There will be more like that on the way, since I talked to Jeffrey today and he promised us No Country for Old Men, I Am Legend, Charlie Wilson’s War and Sweeney Todd, all superb films. I don’t know when we’ll bring them in, but I hope in the next few weeks.

So now we are half-way through January. Isn’t it wonderful how every evening it stays light just that little bit longer? I’m not that big on the dark, so that’s the one part of winter that I am glad to see go – that mid-December dark-by-four. Of course, I so wish we were having a bit more snow (but not on weekends!) but we have no complaints with this month. It hasn’t been its usual bullying self.

Oh, a reminder – we will run matinees on Monday, Martin Luther King’s birthday. So you have a special day to bring the teens to the movies. Now, isn’t that just a fine idea?

My goodness --- King has been gone for forty years now – does that even seem possible? How proud he would be to see that a man of African-American descent is a viable candidate for the presidency. How magnificent he was – how grand the dream that lives on.

See you at the Dietrich.
