At The Dietrich

I just got the most delightful note from cousins I have never met. It’s so neat. They are cousins from my grandfather’s side of the family and they used to live on Long Island until they moved to Florida. So, they read my column and noticed that this winter was resting a little heavily on our minds up here in the frigid north. So she wrote and invited me to sunny Florida! Of course, I can’t leave at the moment, but one of these days I’m going to buy a plane ticket and head to Tampa. Yes, I am. And I know we’ll have so much fun! After all, related to my beloved Grandfather, they couldn’t be anything else! So, thank you Jane and hubby Bob. I appreciate the invite and one of these days I’m going to take you up on it!

What a week we have coming up for you. To begin with, on Wednesday March 12 at 7:30 we have the wonderful Mike Lewis live on the Dietrich stage! He is such a nice man and has such a beautiful voice, the evening should be spectacular! He is donating his time to raise money for the theater and we are unbelievably grateful. It is $15.00 a ticket and it all goes to the theater! Plus, besides hearing the finest of the local news anchors in concert, you receive his newest CD for free to take home as a keepsake. Now, is that generous or what? So come enjoy a lovely evening of entertainment with Mike and Carl Canady’s talented daughter Erin (she’s opening for Mike) and help the theater all at the same time. Oooooh. I just can’t wait!

And for you history buffs, keep the last Sunday in March open because we’re going to show a terrific little movie about Francis Slocum. It’s so interesting and heart wrenching, you’re just going to love it. And Bill Bachmann, who made the film, will be here to answer any questions you might have after you’ve seen it!

Of course, you might be wondering what movies I have for you this week. Holding Vantage Point. I actually saw it the other day and it was pretty good. It certainly is exciting! Now, for one week only (hear that ladies?) we are bringing in a chick double-feature. Fool’s Gold and 27 Dresses. Both are light romantic comedies and just what we thought might give you ladies a mid-winter lift. If you look at the schedule you’ll see that we have staggered the nights each one shows, so that you can either come in and see them as a double feature, or you can choose seeing them at either a 6 or an 8 o’clock showing. We know some folks don’t like to stay up too late, so that’s why we showed 27 Dresses at 6 three days of the week and then at 8:30 the others. And the same with Fool’s Gold. That way you can see them at a time best for you!

Next week we have the incredible Kite Runner coming in for one week only. (Playing opposite Horton Hears A Who!!!!) If it’s anywhere near as fine as the book (and from all the reviews it is) it is a heart wrenching and incredibly sad story but hopeful at the end. You can only weep for the countries that fall into the hands of religious fanatics – it’s such a fine case to be made for the separation of church and state. Our Founding Fathers were darn smart fellas. They understood how dangerous that mix can be. And the Taliban isn’t dealing with a full deck on the best of days, so giving them power was a serious error. Come see the movie – it will give you tremendous insight into what is happening over there.

Still finishing booking for the spring festival. Couldn’t get a couple of the films. Cassandra’s dream is out since all the prints are in Europe, Bonneville couldn’t play for just a few days and too early to book Pettigrew. So we’re looking at In Bruges and Live and Become. These early DVD releases are killing us! But still, I think festival will be the best ever! (But then, I always think that!)

See you at the Dietrich.

Wyoming County Reads 2008: One County, One Book, One Movie ended with a flourish Wednesday, February 27, with 140 Jane Austen fans attending the showing of the 2005 movie of Pride and Prejudice in the Dietrich’s Evans Theater. A lively discussion followed the movie, led by Dr. Philip Mosley of Penn State University. Was the movie true to the book? What effects did the director use to set the mood? Why is this book so popular today? These are just some of the topics of the discussion. Most agreed that in our complex and sometimes troubled world, it is reassuring and comforting to read about a time when manners and polite conversation reigned. All in all, this was a banner year for Wyoming County Reads: 250 free books were picked up and 140 readers participated in discussions throughout the county. Thank you Procter and Gamble for sponsoring this very popular program.

Saturday, April 5, Susi Nuss, master basketmaker and instructor, will conduct a basketry workshop called Create a Berry Basket. Students will create a small open berry basket of hand pounded black ash wood splints. The basket features a square checker weave base. Besides learning basketry techniques, students will learn how to prepare black ash wood splints. No experience is required. It is not too late to register at 996-1500.

We discovered the artistry of Jay Stevesky and Ed Wargo, classical guitar and flute master musicians, when they performed in the pre-show of Trial By Jury. Now they are coming back to Tunkhannock to perform at the Dietrich Theater on Sunday, April 27 at 3:00 pm. Mark your calendars for April 27 for two reasons! The Lizza Studio just down the street from the Dietrich is having a Opening Reception for Keystone Senior Exhibit I the same afternoon from 1:00 pm to 4:00. So, we are inviting you to go to the Lizza Studio, a must-see premier art studio in Tunkhannock, and then simply walk down the street to the Dietrich for our first Guitar and Flute concert by musicians who have a shared passion for these highly expressive instruments. Sounds like a perfect Spring afternoon to me!

Last but not least our Spring Film Festival begins April 11 with our Gala Night. We have two wonderful films for you for Gala Night. - The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and The Savages, both critically acclaimed. Other films that are tentatively scheduled are: Hollywood Librarian for a couple of showings because we liked it so much when we showed it last Fall, and also because it gives those who couldn’t see it the day we showed it another chance. Then the Frank Langella film, Starting Out In The Evening, Persepolis, There Will Be Blood, The Rape of Europa, Caramel, The Singing Revolution, Woody Allen’s Cassandra’s Dream, Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day, The Year My Parents Went On Vacation, the Bob Dylan biopic I’m Not There, Taxi To The Dark Side, Lars and the Real Girl, and Bonneville. Come and partake of our feast of films. They are too good to miss!
