At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

Woo-hoo! Spring is here! And what follows closely on the heels of the “Spring” announcement? Why, festival time, of course! Gala night is nearly upon us and with many tickets already sold, best make that call! (You know, if you wait there is the distinct possibility of ending up on the dreaded waiting list.) It’s going to be a wondrous night, as always. For lovers of film and fine food, this is THE night to be at the Dietrich. Epicurean is back!!!! It will be sooo good to see our dear Carla once again presenting the glorious food – almost too lovely to eat - - that Epicurean prepares with such seeming ease. And our blessed Lori and Jerry Bogedin are going to be bringing some of Twigs catering delights (we are forever in their debt since they totally saved us last fall when tragedy struck Epicurean the day before the gala) to us, and then Tom St. Claire, who has started a new catering business, asked if he could bring a couple of goodies to the Gala table, so (deep breath here – this is the mother of all run-on sentences)there is going to be an excess of food goodies at the table on April 11! And fine wine. And great company.

Hmmm. Did I forget something? Hmmmm. Let me think. Oh, yeah. Whoa! That’s right. I forgot – besides all those incredible eats we also have two movies! Yeah! Two fine, superb, four-star films for your enjoyment. Boy, does it get better than that? Movies, wine, food. Gosh – I wonder who thought this up? Soooo cool! So, the first film is The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, an inspirational, based-on-true story about a young, successful man who has everything in the world going for him. And then, suddenly, in the literal blink of an eye, he doesn’t. He has a stroke and his body instantly becomes his prison. He can do nothing for himself. He cannot communicate. He is as trapped as a deep sea diver in a diving bell. Except that he still has his mind and his imagination – - in other words, he is still fully human in spite of the terrible thing that has befallen him. And then a young therapist comes into his life and teaches him to communicate, by blinking, with those around him. And so he writes about his life, one letter at a time, and he talks about what he had in that life, and what he still has because although his body is caged, his mind soars free. It will make you laugh and cry and, mainly, it will thrill you, comfort you, and inspire you. How much more could you ever ask from a film?

The second film of the evening will be The Savages starring the incredible Laura Linney (if you’re not watching her right now on HBO as Abigail Adams you are missing a great performance) and the equally incredible Phillip Seymour Hoffman, who is a true acting chameleon. He brings no baggage with him, just becoming whatever part he plays with absolute believability. This is a funny, warm, uplifting film about a family with troubles (gosh, are there any without them?) who are forced, because of circumstances beyond their control, to deal with them. Once again, you will laugh and maybe cry and come out saying – “Wow! What a great flick!”

And that’s what will happen on gala night. So be sure to get those tix now – fewer than half are left already, to make that call – 996-1500 to reserve your seats for one of the most fun nights our wonderful town offers.

Sunday afternoon we have the Frances Slocum movie and Bill Bachman and many of the cast members will be here to answer questions. It is a fascinating time in our history – when Native Americans and settlers came to blows and many times it didn’t work out for the folks involved. For Frances, the story had a happy ending. She was adopted, later married and had children and lived a good and satisfying life. But her mother, who never knew what had become of her, died of a broken heart. Such are the vagaries of life. Do come see it -- - it really is so very interesting!

See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

Spring is finally here! I can’t wait for the warm weather, the flowers to bloom, and of course our annual Spring Film Festival on April 11 – 24. The Dietrich will welcome the new season with fourteen days of sixteen foreign, independent, and art films. Like always, our movie booker, Jeffery Jacobs, and our Executive Director, Hildy Morgan, have picked a wonderful selection of films. These films include Caramel, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, The Hollywood Librarian: A Look at Librarians Through Film, I’m Not There, In Bruges, Lars and the Real Girl, Live and Become, Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, Persepolis, The Rape of Europa, The Savages, The Singing Revolution, Starting Out in the Evening, Taxi to the Dark Side, The Year My Parents Went on Vacation, 2007 Academy Award Animated Shorts. I can’t wait to see Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, The Year My Parents Went on Vacation, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, and Lars and the Real Girl.

We will start off the festival with our Opening Night gala (April 11 at 6:00 pm). It is definitely something you don’t want to miss. We will kick things off with sumptuous hors d’oeuvres from Twigs, Epicurean Delight, and Simply Savory Catering and BBQ. Enjoy The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and the Savages. Epicurean Delight also provides a lavish spread of desserts that always delight your eye and taste buds. Tickets are $40 each for the gala and can be reserved by calling the Dietrich at 570-996-1500.

For those of you who enjoy music, we invite you to join us for a concert featuring Edward Wargo, flute, and Jay Stevesky, guitar, on Sunday April 27 at 3:00 pm at the Dietrich Theater. The Wargo-Stevesky Flute and Guitar Duo was formed to bring together a shared passion for these highly expressive instruments and to explore the beautiful and diverse repertoire for flute and guitar. Their playing is exquisite! They took part in the preshow concert to “Trial by Jury” in our Wyoming County Courthouse last November with La Voce and impressed us all. Tickets to this afternoon concert are $10 each. From 1:00 – 4:00 pm on the same day, be sure to also stop by Lizza Studios for their opening reception of a Keystone College exhibiton.

We have some great classes for little ones coming up in April and May with Amy Colley.
