At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

So. I park behind the theater on Sunday afternoon at about 1:45 because I’m coming to see the Frances Slocum movie and lecture. About 60 people had reserved tix so we thought there would most likely be an audience of 100-125. That’s usually about how it goes with advance ticket sales. So. I’m walking up the little hill and come around the corner and see a couple dozen people on the sidewalk outside the theater and I see that the door is sort of propped open and I think “Oh, my Gosh! Someone burned a batch of popcorn and the fire alarm just went off. Oh no! All these folks are having to hang out on the street!”

Not exactly. In the spirit of never knowing what is going to be a hit or not in the entertainment business, I walked up to the door prepared to tell everyone how sorry I was that there had been this inconvenience when I noticed that what looked like a random bunching of people was actually the end of a line that went all the way to the ticket booth. I made my way inside, saw Omar across the gallery and he mouthed “Sold out!”

Sold out? Did he say “Sold out”????? I stood there for a moment just trying to get my thoughts combobulated. After all, this was a little film and lecture about an obscure moment in history in the Wyoming Valley. A very, very interesting moment in history, to be sure.

It soon became apparent that at least sixty or seventy people were going to be turned away, so we went running to Bill Bachman to ask him if he would mind doing a second show right after the first and he said he would be delighted! And that’s what we did. Most everyone came back, the day was a smashing success, we learned that history lectures are probably best scheduled for a Sunday afternoon, and all was well with the serendipitous world. What a wonderful day! (But now we have to deal with the swelled heads on those cultural people – you know how Margie and Erica can be – just feeling so, so superior to us movie folks. Well, non-movie people – I have this to say! Just wait til gala night! Ha Ha!!!)

A small glitch to tell you about. There was a delay in the mailing of the festival brochures. It was totally out of our control and we apologize for it. There are about fifty tickets left, so make that call now, because once those brochures hit there won’t be any left, and surely you don’t want to miss the very bestest night of the spring! Gala nights (along with It’s A Wonderful Life) are our favorite nights of the year. The food and wine, the wonderful company, the films, all add up to perfection for those of us who love movies, and…well…food..and… ur…wine and …other movie buffs …and just all of it put together! So make that call – 996-1500 today! (We’ll miss you if you don’t come.)

Opening a great family movie this weekend. Nim’s Island is a wonderful little story about a young girl, Nim, played by Abigail Breslin from Little Miss Sunshine, who lives alone on an island with her scientist father. She reads a lot and her favorite author is played by Jodie Foster. In a series of movie-circumstances, Foster comes to the island to visit Nim and all sorts of delightful complications follow. It’s terrific family-fare, so bring the kids and grandma, too. It will entertain everyone.

Holding Horton for one last week – it’s been such a delight and is still doing very well at the box office. Drillbit has two final showings on Friday and Saturday around nine.

Ron Ulias stopped by to see me yesterday. Said the middle school is doing a talent show to benefit the Dietrich. Sounds like great fun. If you have a talent you want to share, give Ron a call – he’d love to fit you in.

Have a grand week. Spring is here. Gala is a week away. All is well with the world!

See you at the Dietrich.
