At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

Wooooeeeeee!!!!! What a weekend! Even we couldn’t believe it! That Indiana fella brought in pure gold! He pushed at Harry Potter’s record, which is pretty darn good considering the fact that Indy isn’t a wizard and he’s no longer young. So, you go, man! You just go and go and go. Those of us in your age bracket are cheering on your feats of derring-do! It’s such a fun, fun, fun movie! And bless all of you who came to the Dietrich to see it! Of course, if you think about it, that just proves how smart you are! Besides all the usual reasons it’s smart to go to the Dietrich (you know, like we really really like you and appreciate the fact that you come here) there’s also that whole $4.00 price tag on a gallon of gas thing. So, if you were to go to, say, Montage, and use two gallons of gas each way that amounts to $16.00 just for the trip! (Wow! Far out!) Now, say you stayed right here in town and wanted to use your $16.00 in a better way than padding the pocket of some Saudi Sheik….well…let’s see. I know what you could do! You could buy two tickets to the movies and get a popcorn. Whoa! And your money stays right here in America – not one dime goes to the middle-east. Now, I ask you, how cool is that?????

Narnia has done very well, although I think not as well as the first because, maybe, (and this is just a guess) it’s a little darker than the first one and therefore not as suitable for the very young. But that’s just a guess. It still did very well and you’ll have a chance to see it this weekend and through the fifth of June. And then we have to bid a fond adieu to those terrific C.S. Lewis characters because we are movin’ on down the road.

And what are we movin’ to? Ha! The movie I said I couldn’t bring in first-run which we are now going to bring in first run! (Sigh. It’s the movies. You never know from week to week what you’re ever, ever going to do.) KUNG FU PANDA!!! That’s the one. It will be here for the delight of kids and their keepers starting June 6. Kung Fu Panda had all the buzz at Show West, the huge movie stuff convention in Vegas every year. We were very disappointed that we might not be able to bring it in, but now that we can, we are happy campers and trust me, you will be too. This is a wonderful little movie with an amazingly lovable main character. And you know, when the kids are delighted we grown-ups end up feeling pretty good, too.

The one I can’t bring you first-run is Sex and the City. But I PROMISE you I can bring it in within two to three weeks after. Okay? It’s supposed to be a totally phenomenal flick, and it’s on my to-see list. I loved the series, and the movie, believe it or not, is supposed to be every bit as good if not better. And you don’t have to have watched the series to love the film. It’s a stand alone and a standout. But this is where you have to practice some self-control (which I can usually do about anything but chocolate. Okay… or cake. Oh, yeah. Then there’s that little do-nut thing. Or pasta…Double sigh.) Okay, but you see what I’m talking about.

These are economic hard times for everyone. So you really need to put your money where your heart is and stay home to shop and to go to the movies and to eat out. You need to think carefully now, not just about the price of gas, but the fact that for every business there has been an incredible inflationary climb in the past year and so we need to look out for each other. Sure, there my not be as big a selection here as there is in the mall, but isn’t the selection good enough? Isn’t there enough to choose from that you really could buy here in town? We have such lovely and unique gift shops – my goodness, there isn’t one that couldn’t hold its own in the city. So now is the time to help your friends and your neighbors and stay closer to home. Remember, Sex and the City will be just as good a movie two weeks into its showing as it will be the first weekend. And if you see it here, not only do you help us out, but if you grab a bite to eat in a local restaurant and pick up that birthday gift at one of our shops, then haven’t you done a noble thing? And isn’t that what we all want in our lives – just a tad of nobility?

Far out! For sure!

See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

We hope you all enjoyed your Memorial Day weekend with families and friends. Maybe some of you had the chance to catch an action packed movie at the Dietrich. Harrison Ford is back as Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls, and those Pevensie siblings are on another adventure in Narnia in C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. We will have these movies for a couple of weeks, so take one in while you can. In June, we will also be bringing in Pixar’s much-anticipated Wall-E. It looks like it is going to be a great summer for blockbusters.

A couple of Sundays ago, we went to see the female version of “The Odd Couple” at The Northeast Theatre in Scranton. It was so great to see this classic play performed with a twist. The leads played by Agnes Cummings and Mary Ethel Scmidt were quite hilarious and had such wonderful comedic timing. If you have never been to The Northeast Theatre, I really recommend it. It is definitely one of our regional gems. We are so fortunate to have professional theater so close to home.

One of our drama instructors Michaela Moore of All About Theatre was also in The Odd Couple cast. It is always fun for Program Director Margie Young and I to see her in the role of a performer because we typically see her in the role of teacher to budding thespians at the Dietrich.

In fact, Michaela will be teaching several camps for us at the Dietrich this summer. For students, ages 6 – 11, students will be able to explore the theatre arts in Acting Camp for Kids. Campers will use their imaginations and learn all about acting through theater games, improvisation, storytelling, play making, character creation and more! Students will create their own characters and stories while learning acting techniques. Each camp will end with a casual performance for families and friends. Acting Camp for Kids will be held on Monday – Friday, June 23 – 27 from 3:00 – 4:30 pm or if you can’t make that camp we will offer a second camp on Monday – Friday, August 11 –15 from 3:00 – 4:30 pm.

Michaela will also be teaming up with our artist-in-resident Amy Colley for three theatre and visual arts camps. In June, children can create Far Out Fairy Tales as they create costumes, props, characters and a play to perform. There will be a morning camp for students ages 5 –12 and an afternoon camp for little ones ages 3 –5. Then in July, Michaela and Amy will take campers ages 5 –12 on a Dr. Seuss like adventure where they learn about inventions and in August, children will learn all about the Olympics in Mount Olympic Camp. For more information about any of these camp offerings, please call the theater at 570-996-1500 or visit www.dietrichtheater.com.
