At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

Okay. So I took you ladies at your word and I’m bringing back two of the biggest hits of the summer – Mamma Mia and Sex and the City! One week only, ladies, so make time in that busy schedule to come to the Dietrich, sink down in your seat and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy! Of course, as you all know, I LOVED Mamma Mia – just one of the best little feather-light films I’ve seen in a long time. It was sentimental, sweet-natured, funny, uplifting, and just plain fun. Sure, it would have been good if Pierce Brosnan had been dubbed. But then again, it was sort of dear watching him struggle so valiantly to warbel a tune or two. And I can’t wait to see Christine Baransky singing Dance With Me, Honey one more time. Lordy, that woman has a set of gams! And really, couldn’t you watch Meryl Streep’s wondrous face forever and she’d never even have to say a word but somehow you’d feel a lot smarter just looking at her. And the breathtaking Amanda Seyfried, from right down the road in Allentown, is a vision of exquisite youth. Well, I guess I maybe have gone on enough, don’t you think? If you haven’t seen it, do come back and give it a try. If you have seen it, it’s even better the second (or third or fourth) time, so come see it once again before it disappears and you’ll have to visit the Greek Isles on your own.

Sex and the City is the most romantic film we’ve had here in forever. Frankly, I didn’t know if I’d like it or not because ofttimes a film made from a television series is truly dreadful. But this one is a perfect adaptation. It’s very, very funny but it’s also very sad as the lives of the women unravel in too familiar ways. But like Mamma Mia, it delivers a wonderful ending and you leave the theater feeling soooo good! Like Mamma Mia, it will only be with us a week, so make time in that busy schedule to see one of the best women’s films of all time.

And then in the Murray is Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 which garnered some excellent reviews. Apparently it’s a women’s movie for younger women, teens and college age. It’s supposed to be well done and about friendships – the kind that women keep their entire lives. Even though it’s basically a young adult film, I’m going to see it.

After all. I loved Kitt Kittredge and that was for little girls. Hmmmmm. Does this say something about my general maturity level? (I still haven’t decided what I want to be when I grow up.)

Star Wars will play at matinee for one more week.

Okay – you should be receiving your festival brochure in the mail any day now. Not to be an alarmist, but if you want to come to opening night you’d best make those reservations soon. We have way less than a hundred tickets left and we are over three weeks away from festival! Sandy called me today to tell me that she thought our films this time looked “really exciting!” I have to agree. I’ll tell you about them next week, although you’ll be able to read about them when you get your brochure. Or you can pick one up at the theater.

So, we are looking for about seventy-five people to commit to a “Cinema Gold Club” membership. Barbara (Pink) Jones and I thought this up the other day while bemoaning the fact that we are both old movie buffs and would love to see said movies on the big screen. So I figured it out – on the second Tuesday of each month we would bring in a great old movie – I don’t know what at the moment – but mainly black and white, grand old stars (Gable and Lombard and Stewart and Peck and Grant and Rita Hayworth and Roz Russell and Barbara Stanwick and Bette Davis and on and on….) and they’d be open to everyone but I have to have a core group of 75 to commit or I can’t do it because they cost so much to bring in. So at $6.00 a ticket, it would cost $66.00 to buy a year's subscription (you’d get one month free) and then we could start showing the films so many of us love on a regular basis. Just think about it. Contact me at hildya@epix.net if you want to talk about it.

See you at the Dietrich.
