At The Dietrich

Hildy Morgan

Oh…my…gosh!!!!! What a weekend!!!! It was so cool – I wish you all could have been there with us! It was one of those perfect weekends where everything is even better than you hoped for. Doesn’t happen that often, but this time it did – in spades! Okay, I’ll start with gala night. The food was sooooo outstanding! Of course, Epicurean Delight not only makes the most delicious food on earth, but it is so gorgeous! I really believe that no one on earth makes food look as fine as Epicurean, bless their sweet hearts.

And this was the first year that Seasons did as much food for us as they did, and it was grand! Of course, I think that Bruce is a genius in the kitchen, and he showed off his talents superbly at the gala.

The wine from Nimble Hill was remarkable! I had the white, but I heard that the rose and the reds were wondrous, too.

The only little sad moment was that our dear Lori and Jerry of Twig’s fame weren’t with us. But we look forward to them rejoining us in the spring.

Brideshead Revisited is a magnificent movie – melancholy and brilliant. About class, and religion (it seemed to stress that there are no atheists in foxholes) and longing for all the wrong things. And of course, Emma Thompson was as wondrous as ever – no matter what the part, she never, ever, strikes a discordant note.

Then early Saturday morning (way, way too early) we welcomed Jonathan and Sara Maberry to downtown T’town with much delight and anticipation. Jonathan was with us to run a day-long writer’s workshop. I had been a little worried that a full day might be too much, but trust me, it wasn’t! (I suggest you look him up online and if he is giving another workshop within driving distance, and you are a writer (or someone who would like to be a writer) hit that gas pedal hard and hie thee off to spend a day in his company! It was, without a doubt, one of the finest workshops I have ever attended! Jonathan Maberry writes a bit of everything, but right now he’s been doing novels – two of which have won the Bram Stoker Award . He’s written a trilogy (Ghost Road Blues, Dead Man’s Song and Bad Moon Rising – - wow!!! Even the titles are chilling!) about a small town caught up in some very, very creepy business. It’s Stephen King type horror – lyrically written, scary as all get-out, and just great fun to read. Go buy his books! Go on the internet and look him up. Take a course from him. Whatever! He’s worth spending time with whether you’re a reader or a writer or both. As the late great Jack Parr would have said – “I kid you not.”

So, now after all the excitement of the perfect weekend, I am at home in my bathrobe, nursing the mother of all colds. So typical of me during festival week. I get myself so worked up about all the things that could possibly, possibly, even for the teeniest second go wrong, that I don’t sleep for days before. By the time the gala is upon us I haven’t slept for three or four nights, so I’m a sitting duck for whatever little virusy thing is going around. I am therefore knocked off my pins when it’s all over. But that’s okay. The ladies of the Dietrich run everything just fine without me. (But you do miss me a little, don’t you ladies? Huh huh huh????)

At the movies – more wondrous film festival movies and in the Murray we have the Coen Brothers Burn After Reading. Can’t wait to see it. By the way – saw The Visitor the other night (before I was overcome by the germs from hell) and it is superb! Simply superb. And has so much to say about how we treat those not entirely like us. It’s a gem of a film and I couldn’t recommend it more highly.

Have a great week, dear friends.

See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

What a performance! Jez Lowe and his band, The Bad Pennies, played a phenomenal show last Wednesday night at the Dietrich. I was just dazzled by all of the instruments they played including bass, whistles, bagpipes, the accordion, keyboards, mandolin, fiddle, and guitar. Kate Jordan opened the show with one of my favorite folk songs about the local flooding caused by Agnes in ‘72. It was an amazing night. We would like to thank Lorne Clarke of the Old Lynn Concert Series for helping make the concert possible.

Our next musical event coming up will be Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus performed by La Voce on Sunday, October 5th at 3:00 pm. Join us for this rollicking opera of “The Revenge of the Bat”. Die Fledermaus’ plot is a practical joke concocted as payback for an embarrassment suffered a few years earlier. The colorful cast includes some of the area’s finest singers and instrumentalists and is directed by Dolores Dominick-Noll. Tickets are $10 each and are available at the Dietrich Theater ticket booth or by calling 570-996-1500.

We also have some interesting classes and workshops coming up in the next few weeks. Starting next Tuesday night at 7:00 pm, the Golden Days of Radio Players Group will be back. Directed by Valerie Paulus, adults will be able to learn the ins and outs of creating a live radio play production. The group will learn how those neat old radio sound effects are made and how to make characters come to life by learning techniques to change their voices. The class will culminate with a live performance for the public on Tuesday, November 11th. No experience is required and admission is free.

For those who are more interested in the folk arts or crafting, the Dietrich will be offering a new Decorative Painting at Night workshop on Monday, October 6th from 6:00 - 9:00 pm. In just three hours you will be able to make an autumn door decoration under the instruction of Eileen Balboa. No experience is required. Eileen has been teaching Decorative Painting on Wednesday afternoons at the Dietrich for over three years. We are delighted she was interested in teaching a night class and hope to have more in the future. Every year she comes up with about thirty painting projects for her students to paint! She is an amazing teacher and we are glad to have her. Preregistration is required for this night class and admission is $30 including materials. Call 570-996-1500 to sign up.

Later in October, the Dietrich’s very own Esther Harmatz will be starting up another Jewelry Making series. Her popular Glass Fusing class has already filled up, but we still have space available in her one-night Loom Beading workshop on Thursday, October 23 from 7:00 - 9:00 pm. In this class, students will create a woven beaded bracelet. Admission is $25 and all materials are provided.

For kids, Amy and Steve Colley will be offering a Masks and Monsters visual art series. How appropriate with Halloween just around the corner! Students will learn how to create masks using various techniques such as papier mache. Call the theater for more information about these mask making series for a variety of age groups.

Oh, we hope you are enjoying the Dietrich’s Fall Film Festival. We have one week to go - so come out and see some of the best foreign, independent, and art films of the year!
