At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

Okay. So every once in awhile a really, really big movie comes along – you know, one that crosses generational lines, is totally fun and exciting to boot! Yeah. You know what I’m talking about. Star Trek, of course. When it premiered on television in 1966 no one could have known that it would still be chugging along over forty years later. It’s true, it evolved over the years into new series, with new casts, but the essence of the series remained the same – that the Starship Enterprise went where no one had gone before, and it went in peace. There lay the huge difference between it and its shoot-em-up sci-fi brethren.

The message, during the terrible bloodbath that was Vietnam, was that there were better ways to manage conflict than bombs and bullets. The other message so often was that although the culture they discovered may be completely different from ours, it was not the job of the Enterprise or its crew to force our values on them, but rather to interact peaceably and move on.

Of course, if they met a really mean space guy (or gal) it was not impossible for Kirk and crew to blast them into deep space, never (or mostly never) to return.

It was one of those series that simply everyone I knew watched. We talked about it after it was broadcast. We said what Kirk should have done. We couldn’t understand the crisp logic with no feelings attached expressed by Spock. And we all held our breath if the Enterprise crew was in danger, waiting…waiting…for Scotty to “beam them up!”

Like all shows, of course, it evolved, it grew older, it finally ceased to be except in the world of cable re-runs where, like old Law and Order episodes, it lives forever. Past tense.

Except now it’s back! New episode! Pre-older Kirk, now it’s younger Kirk, but who cares? It’s Kirk and that’s what counts! From everything I read and hear, it’s fabulous! Go to Rottentomatoes.com if you don’t believe me and read the reviews. They are incredible! (That’s a terrific site, by the way, if you’re wondering about the worth of a film you’re thinking of attending.)

So it’s opening Thursday night at 9:15 which is a fun sort of thing. Usually movie companies don’t allow an earlier show the night before. It shows a good deal of faith in the product by the movie company. They think the word of mouth on it will be terrific. Actually, it already is.

So, come to the Dietrich and see what will be one of the truly great films of the summer. And even if you never in your life have seen a Star Trek episode (uh….is there such a person????) this is the one to see. Come join those of us who can’t wait to see our heroes, young and beautiful once more (sort of Benjamin Button meets deep space) on the adventure of a lifetime. Oooooh. What fun!

X-Men is still playing and will be for two more weeks. But then it’s replaced by Night At The Museum 2 which takes place in the Smithsonian! And looks to be soooo good! And then, if the stars are aligned just right, if the moon is in the seventh house, if Jupiter aligns with Mars, and if peace guides the planets (heh heh…sound familiar????) then, in June, we will have FOUR SCREENS to show movies on! Gasp! I can hardly breathe at the thought. That means we can have a million movies this summer. Okay. Not really a million, but it will feel like it. And we can put some adult films in there amongst the blockbusters. (I’m thinking Angels and Demons for one.)

So, have a fine spring week, dear friends. Take time to smell the lilacs.

See you at the Dietrich!

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

Since summer vacation is just around the corner, I thought I would focus on some of the amazing camps that the Dietrich will be offering during the summer months. Each year we kick off our summer camps series with an ever-popular Theatre & Visual Arts Camp for five to twelve year olds. Amy Colley and Michaela Moore will be teaching three of these camps at the theater this summer. This enthusiastic duo will start out with Creepy Crawly Critters: Theatre & Visual Arts Camp during the week of June 22 through 26th from 10:00 am - noon. In this camp, students will learn all kinds of fascinating facts about insects of all kinds. They will also create costumes, plays, pottery, jewelry and more that is all about some of the smallest and most interesting creatures on our planet.

Then in July, Amy and Michaela will be back for their second Theatre & Visual Arts Camp - Africa Safari. On July 13 through 17 from 10 am to noon, children can catch a tiger or become an elephant in this camp all about Africa and your imagination. Students will create African art and props for their characters as they make up a play about Africa.

For their third camp, students will travel in their imaginations to the fascinating land of Italia. On July 27 to 31 from 10:00 am to noon students will make Roman pottery and create a play about pizza and Michelangelo as they feast their minds on art in theatre in Mamma Mia!: Theatre & Visual Arts Camp. In each camp, Amy and Michaela will also have campers create sets as a group for the play they perform for their parents. During past camps, I enjoyed seeing and hearing about the inventive costumes and characters the students came up with. Admission is $50 per camp.

Michaela will also be offering Acting Camps for Kids at the Dietrich this summer. In these camps students ages 6 to 11 will use their imaginations and learn all about acting through theater games, improvisation, storytelling, play making, character creation and more! Students will create their own characters and stories while learning how to act and how much fun theater is. Camp 1 will be held the week of June 22 to 26 from 2:00 to 3:30 pm and Camp 2 will be held at the same time during the week of July 13 to 17. Admission is $50 per week.

If your child is mainly interested in the visual arts, Steve and Amy Colley will be teaching a variety of art camps featuring different mediums. In All About Pottery & Sculpture Camp, students will learn hand building and glazing techniques and experience using a potter’s wheel as they create their own pots, masks, and musical instruments. Classes will be held the week of July 13 to 17 from 2:30 - 4:00 pm.

During the week of July 13 to 17, students can discover animal totems as they learn about the American Indian zodiac. Campers will learn how each animal embodies certain strengths and attributes as they create their own totems out of a variety of household items. Camp will be held from 2:30 - 4:00 pm each day of that week. Admission is $50.
