Folk Music Benefit for the Dietrich Theater
At the Dietrich Theater in downtown Tunkhannock
Sunday, February 26 at 3 p.m.
Admission: by donation
In response to the devastating flood of September 2011, Lorne Clarke and his musical friends will present a folk music extravaganza to help pay for the reconstruction after the Susquehanna overflowed its banks and caused great damage to all four theaters, both studios, the heating and cooling system and more. Lorne is inviting many singer-songwriters to participate. Please come and enjoy the music and know that you are helping the Dietrich Theater. Tickets are available at 570-996-1500 and at the door as long as they last.

At The Dietrich

Okay. I just completed my first (pretty much) week of actual (pretty much also) retirement. I worked last Monday and part of Tuesday and then I had the rest of the week off. Wow! All the things I was going to do floated before my eyes. Walk the dog. Clean the guest room. Write. Plan menus. Invite guests for dinner. Ha! It was to be the beginning of a brave new world. Soooo exciting! Soooo fulfilling.
     Sigh.
So what I actually did was watch ten back to back episodes of House Hunters while eating chocolate and munching on chips. To my credit, I actually THOUGHT about going for a walk, but the potato chips had made me feel icky and what was the point of a walk then since no walk in the world could help all that fat I’d just ingested. So I had a dish of ice cream instead.
That was Wednesday. Thursday was a little bit better. I replaced House Hunters with Law and Order SVU (which is more energetic) and the chips with almonds which I read were good for you. I figured if a handful were good, a bag would put me in tip top shape. I also replaced my chocolate soy milk with gingerale, entirely simpler than soy and yet able to deliver nearly pure sugar to an energy-starved system. I thought about a walk one more time, but it was pretty windy out so I decided since this day was devoted to my health, I would stay on the couch and eat a few more almonds.
Friday I had my mind made up. I made a list of the things I needed to accomplish that day, starting with training the dog and ending with a full course dinner prepared in the afternoon after I had showered and dressed, done some writing and maybe dusted the living room. Lucky I was feeling so good from the almonds the day before. I felt totally healthy! It was definitely a go. Retirement was a breeze! Except that Lifetime Movie Channel was running a marathon about really bad guys who marry and murder multiple women and the incredible women who, against all odds, bring them to justice! Lucky I was feeling so healthy because the tension from the movies called for the calming influence of chocolate ice cream. Thank heavens I had my emergency supply! I thought about training the dog, but he looked so peaceful asleep on the couch that it just wasn’t right to disturb him. And after all, who was I to tell him what to do and when? He doesn’t do that to me.
And then it was the weekend with a million things to do, all of which I did because that’s what I do on weekends. Now I just have to figure out the rest week.
Okay, we have the same movies this weekend. I know. Bummer. But we do, so why not give them a chance if you haven’t seen them yet? Safe House is really good, Mysterious Island is fun and silly, Reese Witherspoon is adorable and The Artist is most likely going to take the Academy Award for Best Picture this coming Sunday. It’s an energetic, fun , wondrous little picture and even the dog is a star! It’s about the silent movie business, so much of it is actually silent, but remember, those films communicated just as well as the talkies that would follow. I know it’s an art film, but give it a chance. It’s completely wonderful!
This Sunday we have are delighted to have Lorne Clark and the boys do a benefit concert for the Dietrich. Thank you oh Great Bear – for all you do for us - - for your kindness, your grand sense of humor and your talent. Thank you for bringing together some of the best singer/songwriters in the entire area. Thank you for using your talents to help us! This Sunday at 3:00. Lots of tix at the door! Do come. It’s such fun!!!!
Next week, The Lorax and most likely Project X.
    See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

by
Erica Rogler

Last weekend local hiking author and Wyoming County District Attorney Jeff Mitchell took us on an adventure through photos of the natural beauty of northeastern Pennsylvania. Over one hundred fifty children and adults came out to find out more about the hiking trails that are available for us to explore throughout the region. The presentation has me interested in returning to Ricketts Glen State Park during the summer to hike its magnificent waterfall trails. At the presentation, Jeff made his book "Hiking the Endless Mountains" available for sale and they sold out. We would like to thank Jeff for generously donating his time and book proceeds to the theater.

The Dietrich will be hosting another free event on Saturday, March 10 from 9 a.m. to noon. Join us then for the award-winning film on the subject of lyme disease Under Our Skin. This film covers the science and politics of lyme disease and documents personal accounts of individuals whose lives have been affected by it. Dr. Daniel Cameron, M.D., M.P.H, will conduct a Q & A session following the movie. This event has been sponsored by the Endless Mountains Lyme Disease Support Group. I am definitely interested in learning more about the diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and prevention of the disease. All are welcome to attend. For more information or to reserve your free tickets, call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500.

In March the Dietrich will also be hosting a variety of new classes. For young children ages 2 ½ to five years old, Rebecca Lesko of the Endless Mountains Nature Center will be teaching a hands-on, minds-on nature program called Little People and Nature. During these classes, little ones and their favorite adults will explore and learn about various topics each week including Groundhog’s Shadow, Owls, Sense-a-tional and Animal Babies through songs, puppets, stories, games and crafts. The Tuesday class series will be held on March 6, 13, 20, and 27 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and the Wednesday class series will be held on March 7, 14, 21, 28 at the same time. Admission to Little People & Nature is free thanks to funding from the Overlook Estate Foundation. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 to register. Space is limited.

Children will also have the opportunity to learn all about puppets in March. Instructors Amy and Steve Colley will teach students how to create puppets from everyday household items! Each puppet will be unique and ready to bring a new character to life. Three and four year olds and their moms, dads, grandparents and caregivers will create puppets in Puppetry Together held on Fridays, March 9, 16, 23 and 30 from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Preschool Puppetry will be offered on Thursdays, March 8, 15, 22, and 29 at the same time. Steve Colley will teach students ages 9 to 12 year olds All About Puppetry on Thursdays, March 8, 15, 22, and 29 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and All About Puppetry for five to twelve year olds will be offered on Fridays, March 9, 16, 23, and 30 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

For adults, Sarah Sidorek will be teaching a Knitting for Beginners workshop in March. During these classes, students will learn basic knitting techniques as they make mobius scarves. The class will cover the knit and purl stitches, casting on and binding off as well as basic pattern reading. All materials will be provided and students will have the choice of making a scarf long to wrap more than once or a short scarf to hug the neck. Classes will be held on Tuesdays, March 6, 13, and 27 from 7:00 p.m. to 9 p.m. Admission is $35. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 for more information or to register.
