What a week that was! And what a week coming up! Okay, so I have to tell you that I saw Mame on Saturday night and it was wonderful!!!! It was funny and polished and just a terrific production. I laughed all the way through, which was a wonderful treat. Laughing always makes us feel so good, doesn’t it? And everyone was just terrific – really, they were. The two boys who played Patrick (one young, one older) -- Trent Frazier and Joe McAndrew did a wonderful job as the young nephew bewildered by life and by his Aunt, but, in the end, understanding what a gift she was. As I said, they were all talented and excellent. But there were a few I hope we will be seeing much more of because they are so very, very talented and perfectly at home onstage.

Brenda Wenner – the shivery Nurse Ratchet in last year’s One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest – was a perfect Mame. She was funny and kind and adventuress and just that little bit “off” that made everything she did very funny. Jessica Unice is a find! She is a comedienne extraordinaire. She is so funny that I found myself laughing at almost anything she said. And the scene that is a play within a play was one of the funniest bits I have ever seen on any stage! Eric Lutz is a natural on stage. He was Billie last year in Cuckoo’s Nest and this year as the smooth but loving Beauregard was absolutely perfect! He’s a pleasure to watch onstage and I can’t wait to see what he tackles next. And finally, David Swanson who had multiple parts but who was extraordinarily funny as the “book doctor” is our very own treasure. It is my secret hope that soon Jennifer will choose to do a musical so we can all hear David’s beautiful voice! (And I swear, I just mention these folks because they stood out to me, but EVERYONE was so good! They just did the Dietrich proud!!!!!)
So, that was last week. This week we have the free showing of The Jungle Book underwritten by the wonderful Kintner family! We can’t thank them enough for their kindness and generosity. The children who come to see it are enthralled and, because the popcorn and soda are also free, all the children can see the movie, have a snack and something to drink. I love those days! You’ve be amazed at how many children are seeing a movie for the first time. And they love it so. It’s just a grand morning at the Dietrich and we’re so grateful to the Kintners for giving the children such a wonderful gift!
Okay. Now for movie news. Iron man plays this weekend to, we hope, big crowds. It looks to be a high tech, funny, slickly produced movie that is the epitome of computer-generated hi-jinx. It’s a great fun movie because it’s done with such tongue-in-cheek. I think Robert Downey Jr. is incapable of making a film where he isn’t fully aware of the irony of what he is doing.

And Thursday night at 10:00 we will be showing Gatsby in 2D.   It looks utterly magnificent - - and I can’t wait to see it. But this is a note to all those who like everything in 3D. We are showing Gatsby in film, thus 2D (not 3). Now, I really have to be careful here and not go on a rant. But, why in God’s green earth would you do a great American classic like The Great Gatsby in 3D?????? What would possibly possess the filmmakers to add that bit of technical flim-flam to a movie that will hopefully have some substance?   I simply don’t understand. The sets look gorgeous, the actors are top drawer, but exactly what part would you put in 3D? It makes no sense at all! But, whatever, here it will be, properly so, in 2D only! Okay. I’m done with my rant. (You know, the one I tried not to go on.)
Oh heavens, I never got to the guitar concert Sunday at 3:00. Aaaarrrrgggghhhh. Too little time, too many words! So have a great week. Enjoy these glorious spring days. Come to the movies. Have an incredibly fine week!
     See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

by
Erica Rogler

Live at the Dietrich for May 1, 2013
Kudos to the cast and crew of the Dietrich’s recent production of Auntie Mame! They all did a tremendous job of capturing the spirit and comedy of the play. We would like to thank all of the talents who brought this show to the Dietrich stage including director Jennifer Jenkins, Deborah Buck, Caleb Carlin, Emma Douthett, Owen Frazier, Trent Frazier, Molly Henn, Sarah Henn, Rick Hiduk, Patricia Hochenbury, Jerry Jenkins, Alex Keiser, Hoyt Keiser, Eric Lutz, Joe McAndrew, Lucas Nardini, Laurel Radzieski, Suzanne Robinson, Rich Ryczak, Emily Sandercock, Karen Selige, David Swanson, Jessica Unice, Mary Van Vliet and Brenda Wenner. It is definitely a grand thing to have live theatre in the Endless Mountains.
Speaking of live theatre, we will have opportunities for both children and adults and to experience more of this art form in May. Due to its popularity, the Dietrich Children’s Theatre will be bringing the classic children’s tale Peter and the Wolf back to the Dietrich stage on Saturday, May 18 at 11 a.m. Gather up your children, friends and family and see Peter as he imagines catching a wolf with the help of his friends and the orchestra. Admission is free and this show is sure to enchant and delight all ages. Tickets are available by calling 570-996-1500 or visiting the Dietrich’s ticket booth. This event has been sponsored by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council.
Then on Sunday, May 19 at 3:00 p.m., we will have the chance to take in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet live at the Dietrich. Performed by the Gamut Theatre Group of Harrisburg, six energetic actors will bring this timeless love story to life through their 80-minute original text adaptation. After the show, stay for a talk back session with the actors. This will be the sixth year we will be bringing in the Gamut Theatre Group to perform. They have masterfully presented Hamlet, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and even Poe in the Park for us in past years. Admission is free thanks to funding from the Overlook Estate Foundation. For tickets, please visit the Dietrich’s ticket booth or call 570-996-1500.
Live entertainment will continue this weekend with our Cinco de May – Guitar Music of Mexico concert on Sunday, May 5 at 3:00 p.m. Join us as classical guitarist Jay Steveskey pays tribute to Mexico’s vibrant songs and dances while sharing the country’s diverse contemporary classical music for the guitar. I love to see him play. This concert will showcase the works of composers including Manuel Ponce, Agustin Lara, Julio Cesar Oliva, and Ernest Garcia de Leon. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at the door or by calling 570-996-1500.
And don’t forget our free movie events this May. We have something for everyone. Tonight, May 1 at 7:00 p.m., we invite you to attend Bill W., a documentary about the life and work of one of the co-founders of Alcoholics Anonymous. It will be followed by a Q & A session. Admission is free thanks to Wyoming County C.A.R.E.S.
We will also be showing a free children’s movie on Saturday, May 4 at 11 a.m. at the theater. Popcorn and soda will also be free! This event has been sponsored in loving memory of "Jeeterbug" from the Kintner family. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 for reservations or get your tickets at the door while they last.
We will also be showing Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic For Our Time at the Dietrich on Saturday, May 11 at 11 a.m. Admission is free. There will also be complementary book discussions on A Sand County Almanac by Aldo Leopold on Wednesdays, May 8 and 15 at 7:00 p.m. at the Tunkhannock Public Library.
