During the last days of the Civil War, a lost soldier and a young blind woman fall in love. Though one is Confederate and one Union, they discover their similarities are far more important than their differences. The woman’s widowed mother, with one soldier son killed in front of her and another son still missing, is unable to let go of her bitterness and hatred. As a nation begins the task of healing, the burning need for vengeance may reap unimaginably tragic consequences. This play will be presented outside in Lazybrook Park as part of Tunkhannock’s sesquicentennial celebration of the Civil War. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 for more information.

Civil War Era Music
At the Dietrich Theater in downtown Tunkhannock
Sunday, June 30 at 3:00 p.m.
Presented by: Thomas Jolin
Admission: Free
Sponsored by: Pennsylvania Humanities Council
The trauma of the Civil War produced a tremendous amount of music as the nation mourned and sought relief from the death of over 600,000 Americans. Songs about soldiers’ lives, domestic scenes, minstrel traditions, and the fight to end slavery give us insight into what it was really like to live during that time. Performing on hammered dulcimer, button accordion, harmonica and banjo, Thomas Jolin shares Lincoln and Liberty, Battle Cry of Freedom, No More Auction Block and more. He also discusses the origins of the songs and instruments. Audience participation is encouraged. Tickets are available by calling the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 or visiting the Dietrich ticket booth.

Okay. One more reminder that The Bridegroom of Blowing Rock will be presented, for free, at our gorgeous Lazybrook park Friday (June 21) and Saturday (June 22) at 7:00. It’s directed (of course) by our very own and dear Jennifer Jenkins so you know it will be a quality performance. It’s a taste of Civil War life, with all its’ challenges. Live theater is wonderful on its own, but in such a setting it will be simply grand. Such a terrific way to spend part of a weekend night – seeing a historical play at a scenic park.
And speaking of Civil War, remember that incredible exhibit we have at the Dietrich, in the Earnshaw Gallery. It is so worth your time! And as long as we’re open, you can come in and see it even if you’re not going to a movie. Now, isn’t that a square deal, though?
And then, as long as we’re talking about the Civil War, on June 30 at 3:00, Thomas Jolin will join us for a presentation of Civil War music! Over 600,000 Americans died in that terrible war, and out of the horror and  sadness, came a great deal of music. (Doesn’t music always comfort us in times of  tribulation?) The music will be performed on hammered dulcimer, button accordion, harmonica and banjo. Mr. Joplin will discuss the origins of the songs and talk about the instruments. The songs run the gamut from slavery to the lives of the soldiers to a deep need for freedom. It should be a fine program, both enjoyable and educational. And because it is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council it won’t cost you a dime! Call for tix at 996-1500.
Finally, departing from the Civil War, do remember that on Saturday, June 29 at 9:30 a.m., you can hop on a bus at the Dietrich and head straight for the Everhart Museum where the children (and adults what brung ‘em) will be given a guided tour of the Everhart. And the feature exhibit, Blood of Life: Vampires in Art and Nature, will be followed by an educational workshop. (Now tell me there’s a kid alive who wouldn’t LOVE that exhibit!) After the tour and workshop there will be a box lunch in Nay Aug Park – in other words, it’s a perfect day for a family to enjoy. The fee is $10.00 per person. Not too bad for a perfect day, you think?
Okay, okay. I have to get to the movies now. This weekend we are opening Monsters University. It’s taken over a decade for the little Monsters to be brought back to the screen, and you know, you just KNOW that the kids are going to love, love, love it! They are quality animations and adorable characters. It’s going to be wonderful- - I can’t wait!
And then, in total counter programming, we are opening WW Z – Brad Pitt’s blockbuster about the army of Zombies that come to kill us all. Oooooh, scary stuff. Although mostly, like Tom Cruise’s War of the Worlds, it’s about a man trying to save his family. I have to say, I’m excited to see it because I think it’s going to be pretty good. So come in and give it a try. And we will still have This Is The End which is fast on it’s way to being a cult classic, and Man of Steel which gets an A+ from most reviewers.
And then the following week we bring in Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy in Heat, which, I think, ladies, looks like a raunchy, funny, good time! You know, have a couple glasses of wine, grab some popcorn and go with your gal pals for a good laugh. Certainly won’t be an Oscar contender, but really, who cares? A coupla laughs can be worth a million bucks!
And that’s all the news from the Dietrich! Oh, a bulletin from South Auburn. The daisies and the buttercups have taken over the meadows, and at night they sway in the moonlight and watch the fireflies dance. Makes for a perfect shimmery summer night.
     See you at the Dietrich.

Erica Rogler

Live at the Dietrich for June 19, 2013
Tonight (Wednesday, June 19th) at 7:00 p.m. we hope you can join us for our first of four Civil War sesquicentennial events at the Dietrich Theater. Historian, actor and friend of the Dietrich Ed McMullen will present An Overview of the Civil War 150 Years Later. This presentation is free to the public and all are welcome to attend. Ed will be joined by four gentlemen from the Confederation of Union Generals whose mission is to authentically portray historical figures from the American Civil War era in order to educate the public and honor the service of the persons portrayed. Ed’s guests will be Don Holdridge as Emury Upton, 121st NY; John Hart as General Winfield Scott; Ray Sulger as General Logan; and Bob Sulger as Colonial Cullum. Each guest will have a few minutes to speak about their personas, roles, uniforms and answer questions from the audience. Ed McMullen has a way of making history come alive before your very eyes. You don’t want to miss this special presentation.
Then on Saturday, June 22 come to Tunkhannock to celebrate Founders’ Day. During Founders’ Day, Tunkhannock’s streets are filled with fabulous artisans and vendors, entertainment and delicious food. On Founders’ Day, the Dietrich’s Fundraising Committee will be hosting a basket raffle with baskets filled with gift certificates, car items, movie bags, and lots of other fun stuff. Visit their canopies on the green space outside the theater to show your support. All proceeds will benefit cultural programming for children at the Dietrich.
While in Tunkhannock on Founders’ Day be sure to visit the Dietrich’s exhibit Civil War Remembered: Our Service, Our History. Come and view local treasures and Civil War memorabilia. The display includes uniforms, a drum, discharge papers, a Civil War era quilt, relics from Antietam, Fredericksburg and so much more. On Founders’ Day on Sean Callahan will be in the Dietrich’s gallery to showcase even more Civil War relics that he has collected. The exhibit will open at 10 a.m. on Founders’ Day or can be visited during scheduled movie times or by appointment through July.
During Founders’ Day weekend, the Dietrich will be also be presenting free Theatre in the Park on Friday and Saturday, June 21 and June 22 at 7 p.m. at Tunkhannock’s Lazybrook Park. All are invited to bring a blanket or lawn chairs and enjoy "The Bridegroom of Blowing Rock" by Catherine Trieschmann. This play is about a lost soldier and a young blind woman who fall in love during the last days of the Civil War. Though one is Confederate and one Union, they discover their similarities are far more important than their differences. As a nation begins the task of healing, the burning need for vengeance may reap unimaginably tragic consequences. This play has been sponsored by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and the Dietrich Theater. For more information or directions to scenic Lazybrook Park, please call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500.
