At The Dietrich

Oh my goodness! Have you seen the Christmas decorations at the Dietrich? I know I say this every year, but I think this year Sarah and her band of elves have completely outdone themselves. When you open the doors it’s like walking into an enchanted forest. It’s simply breathtaking! I can’t tell you how many volunteer hours go into turning the Dietrich into a winter wonderland, but it’s a lot of hours, believe me! And the individual cases are so gorgeous. Steve  Colley’s glass work is all silver and white and looks like he somehow captured winter in his talented hands. Then his wife’s beautiful hundred year old farmhouse is all set to weather another holiday with us. I’m not a doll house kind of person (too many cats for that – oh boy, I could just see me trying to have a dollhouse at my house – I can see the cats creeping up on it, alert, deadly…sigh) but I have to say that every year when I see that doll house I want one. It’s just gorgeous, and everything in it is hand made.

Then there is Pat Robinson’s completely fascinating antique toys case. I just love it. All those strange old toys from waaaay before Pat was born, so small, so old, so completely captivating. The display is so interesting, you could spend hours in front of just that one looking at toys of Christmas past. And Sarah is working on a wonderful old house with critters and people and all kinds of Christmassy things. I have no idea exactly what she’s doing with it, but I know it will be sooo cool!
And then there is the case we wait all year for, the one by Stephen Hendrickson, the set designer for the CBS hit show The Good Wife. (If you’ve never watched that show then you really should start immediately! It is. Without a doubt, the best writing and acting on television today, and that says a lot, because there’s a lot of good writing being done for t.v. series.) This year Stephen, knowing our hearts were broken when the flood took away the icy winter wonderland he had created a decade or so ago for us, sort of recreated it and made it even more beautiful than it had been in its original state. Plus it now has motion and sound. It is like looking into the heart of a faerie queen, into the cool chill of a white winter, into the laughter of children and the silliness of clowns and dancing faeries and bears doing the two-step. Oh, you must, must, must come to see it! And as always, Stephen, we are infinitely grateful for all the work you do for us when you are so very, very busy. Stephen puts it together in his home in New York and then takes it apart and brings it here and then puts it all back together again. But in the end what he creates is so magical, so exquisite, that really, it outshines the chilly moonlight on a cold December night. Even if you don’t come to the movies (although, really, why wouldn’t you?) do come to see these wonderful displays and the gorgeous decorations throughout the galleries. You will be so glad you did!
Okay, don’t forget our cookie walk on the weekend of Christmas in Our Hometown. If you can bake some for us that would be spectacular, but even if that is above and beyond the call of what you can do, everyone can surely come and buy some cookies. These are all homemade and wonderful and Nancy Aiello is organizing it all, so you know it’s going to be done totally right. Come join us Friday night and Saturday and buy some of the best cookies ever. The money goes to help those cultural folks with their wonderful programming. Thank you to all the fund-raising volunteers for all your work on this super fund-raiser. Now how neat a deal is it, that you can come here and buy some of the best cookies ever (!!!!) and be helping kids at the same time? I mean, really, how fine a deal is that???
Radio Players will be doing their thing on December 3 so do come and have some fun as they go back in time and put on some old radio shows for your enjoyment. I’m old enough that I remember radio as a very important part of our life back in the forties. That old Philco brought many a funny comedy or scary drama right into the living room. Those were grand days. Come relive them with our gang, but come early if you do. The last time it sold out!
     See you at the Dietrich!

Live at The Dietrich

by
Erica Rogler

Live at the Dietrich for November 27, 2013

As I am writing this, the Dietrich is currently being transformed into a winter wonderland. Volunteers are busy stringing up lights, hanging garland and ornaments, and creating holiday themed displays in our Earnshaw Gallery. Over 18 folks are working to make the Dietrich’s Christmas exhibit come together. Not only do these volunteers donate their time to deck out the Dietrich but some of them have also purchased the decorations. What an amazing community! Right?

In fact, did you know that last fiscal year over 328 community members gave more than 8,767 hours of their time to support the theater? We are absolutely awed by those numbers. And at this special time of year, we would like to say thank you for all that you do. Our appreciation could never be adequately expressed in words, and your commitment to this project is a true gift for all to enjoy.

Speaking of gifts, the Dietrich Radio Players invite you to join them at the theater for their free, live radio performance on Tuesday, December 3 at 7:00 p.m. Come out and experience Charles Dickens’ "A Christmas Carol" adapted for radio by Anthony Palermo and "My Favorite Wife" a radio adaptation of Leo McCarey’s production for RKO Radio Pictures which originally aired on December 7, 1950. Under the direction of Hoyt Keiser and Esther Harmatz over 22 cast members have been busy preparing for this evening which will be filled with fun sound effects, comedy and holiday cheer. Before the show, barbershop quartet Vocal Accord will provide musical entertainment, and following the performance all are invited to join us for a reception of light refreshments. Tickets are available by calling 570-996-1500 or at the door.

The Dietrich is also gearing up for Tunkhannock’s Christmas in Our Hometown on December 6 and 7. Tunkhannock is always so festive that weekend. There will be carolers and ice sculpture demonstrations and all kinds of activities for children and adults to enjoy. Plus it’s a great opportunity to find those unique gifts in Tunkhannock’s beautiful shops. At the Dietrich, we will be showing a favorite Christmas movie "Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas" at 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. for free on both December 6 and 7. This film is brought to you in-part by the Jim Henson Legacy Foundation and is sponsored by Ace-Robbins, Inc. Tickets will be available first come, first served.

The theater will also present its annual Holiday Workshop for all ages on Saturday, December 7 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This morning will be filled with cookie decorating, holiday crafts, singing and creations by Silly Sally the balloon lady. Admission is free, and we would like to thank Ace Robbins for underwriting the event.

And for those of us who enjoy treats, the Dietrich’s Fundraising Committee will be presenting a Cookie Walk to support cultural programming at the theater. On Friday, December 6 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, December 7 from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (or until cookies are gone), you will have the opportunity to purchase a container for $5 to fill with delicious homemade cookies. There is always an amazing assortment.

By the way, we are still looking for folks to help bake cookies for the cookie walk so if you would like to donate a batch of cookies for this fundraiser we would appreciate it. Please feel free to deliver them to the theater on Thursday, December 5 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. or on Friday, December 6 from 9:00 a.m. to noon.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
