At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

The penguins are coming! The penguins are coming! Madagascar will open on Friday night with some of the cutest critters to grace the screen since Thumper or Bambi or Scamp. I mean, these little movie-babies are simply adorable. I can’t wait to see this movie. It’s such a terrific concept – a group of zoo animals in New York City plan the great escape under the tutelage of four bad boy penguins. They want to be free! They want to return to their native lands! They want adventure. Under the guise of being careful what you pray for, the escapees get their much-longed for freedom and, well, it isn’t what it’s cracked up to be. But from the beginning to the end the audience is captivated by these precious creatures. It’s a film for the entire family – just enough adult humor to make us chuckle, but the kind of silly stuff that evokes those deep belly-laughs from the kiddies. Do bring the family to the movies this weekend – you’ll have such a good time!

Star Wars continues its run with us, but will be moved to the Murray. That means you need to come early for seating. Remember, for those purists among us, that the small theater also has DTS sound. There is no difference in the quality of the films in the small theater as opposed to the large. It’s just the seating that’s different. And I know some folks will gripe at our moving it. But let me explain why. Madagascar is for children – and we believe they’ll come out in droves for this film. Adults understand that although movies are fun and entertaining and we love ‘em, that if the theater is sold out they can come back another day to see it. But try explaining that to a child. They’ve waited all day to come to the movies and then they’re turned away because there aren’t enough seats. It’s horrible! I hate to see the little ones cry. They just don’t get the concept of coming back tomorrow. So, when a children’s movie is up against an adult movie (and this Star Wars plays to a much older audience than the first five did) we always put the kids flick in the Evans. Because, really, movies at the Dietrich are about kids and families first and foremost.

So, I met Dr. Emmanuelson. What a nice man. (And very handsome – in the formal sort of way of those nineteen forties movie stars.) He didn’t tell me anything I didn’t want to hear. Checked me out and said he didn’t need to see me until mid-November. Huge sigh of relief. And the best part about him is that he comes to the Dietrich! Wow! Is that cool or what? He and his wife love it. Now, I figure if he likes the theater so much he’s going to make sure nothing bad happens to the person who runs it. Doesn’t that make sense? Listen, post-cancer (or whatever) you hold onto whatever threads you can.

I think the hardest part of being a cancer patient is that it shatters the trust you’ve always had in your body. Especially if you’ve been gifted with good health and energy, to have it suddenly ripped away leaves the brain shell-shocked. And even when you go right on with your life, only skipping a beat or two, there’s that little nagging thought – you’re different now – vulnerable in ways you couldn’t imagine before. I talk with other women and I know this is common, and, for many, it doesn’t last forever. After a few years maybe your confidence is restored. Or maybe not. I think cancer is like the other great Before’s and After’s – it divides our lives in a thousand ways we would never have been able to foresee.

Which isn’t such a bad thing. I have always appreciated the days I have been given, but believe me, I appreciate them more now. And sunsets and sunrises are more heartbreakingly beautiful, because I know I won’t see them forever. That’s alright. In order to live life to its fullest, we need to understand how fragile, how finite, it is. At some time, we all make our peace with that. For some it just comes a little sooner than for others.

Happy Memorial Day. See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

Finally, the summer blockbuster season is here! Last Wednesday night, the Dietrich was packed. Star Wars fans came out in droves to see Episode III – Revenge of the Sith at our special midnight show. I myself want to see what makes Anakin Skywalker turn to the dark side. If you haven’t seen the movie yet or would like to see it again, we will be showing the movie for three additional weeks.

And for those kids and families who are anxiously awaiting the animated film Madagascar, the Dietrich will open it on Memorial Day weekend, Friday, May 27th. After all of those picnics and baseball games, there is no better way to relax with the family than see a movie on the big screen.

Onto cultural things, the Dietrich will be hosting an open house and reception for our Batik artist-in-residence Gail Jones and her students on Monday, June 6th from 6:00-7:00 pm in the Dietrich’s Earnshaw Gallery. If you are curious to find out what Batik is, here’s your chance. Last Tuesday, I took “Batik to Enhance Your Curriculum” with local art teachers. I had so much fun learning more about the art, doing batik and learning how to present it to a variety of age groups. We worked with rice paper and silk scarves to learn how to batik in different mediums. Gail also works in pottery, so some of her pottery is mixed in with the Batik exhibit. This is definitely a bright, springy exhibit you should see whether you are just passing through Tunkhannock or going to the movies at the theater.

In June, the Dietrich will continue to host a variety of its ongoing classes. Artist-in-residence Amy Colley, M.F.A., will teach “Mommy and Me Mixed Media, ages 3 and 4” on Mondays, “Preschool Art” on Thursdays and “Mixed Media for ages 5-12”. Steve Colley will continue “Pottery & Sculpture” on Mondays and will start a new class “Open Studio for Drawing and Painting” on Tuesdays from 7:00-8:30 pm. Open Studio is for students of all ages and levels of experience. This could be a fun class for families or individual artists. Please call the theater at 570-996-1500 to find out more about these classes.

Besides hosting yoga on Monday nights and Wednesday mornings in June, the Dietrich is adding a new Saturday yoga class. So now there is no excuse to not relieve stress! We should have a yoga class that fits your schedule. Certified yoga instructor, Mary Frances Giordano will teach or reinforce the basic yoga poses (asanas) which gently stretch and strengthen the body. Special attention will be given to proper breathing and alignment in the postures. Classes will be held on Saturdays, June 4, 11, 18, and 25 from 10:00 am – 11:00 am. Admission is $40 for the four classes. Please bring a yoga mat or beach towel and wear comfortable stretching clothes. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 to register.

Now let’s jump to the middle of June! To celebrate Father’s Day (which is less than a month away), Heartland artist Sarah Sidorek will work with students ages 10 and up to create the perfect Father’s Day gift on Thursday, June 16th from 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm. Now I don’t want to give too much of the surprise away in case Dad is reading this, so call the theater at 570-996-1500 for the details.
