At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

Before I talk about movies (and I have some great ones to talk about) I want to say thank you to all the people who called me, or e.mailed or sent notes telling us how sad they were at what had happened. Those contacts meant the world to us, and especially to me because so many were so personal. I do have to say I’m having a little trouble with anger management at the moment, and hope I get a bit better about it as the days go by. The hearing for that woman won’t be until the end of September, so it’s a long time to wait to see if we’ll get some satisfaction. In the meantime, I’m thinking of taking up yoga. Mainly for the breathing and calm thoughts.

So, on to my really big news. We have an art film coming in early. We will have it at the same time or before many of the art theaters. We got it because I told Jeffrey that we’d have better numbers on art films if we got them earlier. So he went out on a limb for us and we have March of the Penguins coming in on August 5. So, folks, come see it at the Dietrich. It will definitely be with us on the fifth, so don’t see it anyplace else. And don’t wait for the DVD. If we have good numbers on this film we will be able to get art-house films much, much earlier. You know, when you call me and ask about them. But if this one tanks, I’m afraid all my pleas will fall on very, very deaf ears.

For those of you who don’t know anything about March of the Penguins, it’s a French documentary about a group of very, very brave Emperor Penguins who are making their way across the deadly Antarctic ice-floes on a journey of survival. The photography is breath-taking, the story is wondrous and the narrator, for the English version , is Morgan Freeman - - velvet voice in ace form. It’s perfect for the whole family and they’ve been lining up in the big art-houses in New York and Los Angeles for months. And now we have an early shot at it. Is that exciting or what???

Friday we open Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It’s a little weird, a little strange, very Johnny Depp. But, for those of you who are Roald Dahl fans, remember, he didn’t write little sugar and spice books. One of the reasons kids love his work so much is that it’s dark and kinky and so, so strange. This movie is tracking very well in the Nielson ratings (meaning they call and ask folks what movie this summer they are going to make a special effort to see and Charlie was on top of most of the surveys). It looks like great fun, and we’re hoping this one will hit big. Otherwise, this will be a summer with no sell-outs for us - - a first. The movies that were national hits simply weren’t our kind of film. And mostly, of course, nothing hit very big. So, cross your fingers for us. And bring those kiddies to one of the few PG rated films this summer. We’ll be popping that corn for you. I promise.

Finally, we have War of the Worlds still playing in the Murray. You know, it’s a great movie! I’ve seen it twice and am going back again - - that’s how much I loved it! It’s really, really scary and it’s really, really well done. I love that it’s the story of Everyman just trying to survive and keep his kids safe from a force he can’t begin to understand. And isn’t that parenting in general? We so seldom have a real grasp of the world our children will face, but we try our damndest to protect them in every way we know how. And Tom Cruise does it splendidly. As does Dakota Fanning. She is an amazingly talented kid.

So, those are the movies in store right now for you. Not a bad list. Remember that the exhibit of the Keystone students will be over in a week, so come see it if you haven’t yet. Oh, yes. It’s sign-up time for Kinder Music if you have an interest. That’s private, not part of the Dietrich programming, but it’s being taught at the Dietrich. Why not? The Peg Fassett Performance Studio is just about a perfect place to introduce little ones to the joys of music. But sign up soon. Space is limited.

See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

Two more days until Charlie and the Chocolate Factory hits the Dietrich’s big screen! This will be a delight for kids. Johnny Depp is one of those actors who is great in all different types of films - funny in Pirates of the Caribbean and spooky in The Secret Window. And there is still time to catch War of the Worlds.

Now onto live events at the Dietrich. Last night, the Dietrich’s Acting for Adults I class presented their showcase of scenes and monologues to the public. I was amazed to see how much the class achieved in their six-week session. Next Tuesday, we will continue Acting for Adults in session II with Sara Lane who has her M.F.A. in Acting. From Tuesday, July 19 to August 23rd from 7:00-8:30 pm, students will add to their acting “toolbox” by focusing on the physical life of their characters. Students will strengthen their technique, and learn how to apply their skills to material that is more complex and stylistic. A prerequisite for this class is Acting for Adults I or an audition. A showcase will follow this class as well. Admission is $60. Registration is required by calling 570-996-1500.

And kids are having a great time in our “Everhart Ancient Art Explorations” class. Last weeks, students explored Cave Art from sculptures and paintings to jewelry. Terra, a staff member of the Everhart Museum, helped kids create their own cave art jewelry. Each Friday this July, students will learn about art from a different period in history.

“Mask Making Camp” for kids ages 5 to 12 starts next week From July 18th to the 22nd at 9:30-11:00 am, kids will take an adventure into the art of making masks. Besides making masks out of all different types of mediums, instructor Amy Colley, M.F.A. will teach students how masks were made throughout history and what purpose they served in different cultures. Admission is $45 for the week. Then on Tuesday, July 26th through Thursday, July 28th from 10:00 am-10: 45 am, preschoolers will be able to take part in a similar mask making camp which will be geared toward their age group. Admission is $30 per preschooler. Call 570-996-1500 to register.

And since our “Knights, Princesses, and Dragons Theatre and Visual Art Camp” is filled for kids ages 5-12 in August, we’ve decided to add a similar camp the week of August 22nd through August 26th from 10:00-11:30 am called “Drawing Knights, Princesses, and Dragons”. In this camp, students ages 8-12 will learn about medieval times as they create their own knights, princesses, and dragons story and illustrate it. Admission is $45.00. Call 570-996-1500 to register.

For adults and families, during the week of August 1st through the 5th, the Dietrich will offer two intergenerational classes. From 9:30 -11:00 am, Steve Colley, M.F.A., will teach “Intergenerational Oil Painting” in the Dietrich’s Dorothy G. Sheldon Art Studio. Students of all ages and levels of experience will have the opportunity to learn the skills of oil painting. Participants will learn how to stretch and prime canvases, mix paints, make brush stroke techniques and more. They will also learn about famous arts with expertise in oil painting.

Then at night during the first week in August, the theater will offer “Landscape Drawing and Painting” in Tunkhannock’s Riverside Park from 7:00-8:30 pm. Get in touch with nature as you learn how paint and draw in the great outdoors with instructors Amy and Steve Colley. Sunsets on the river are gorgeous and the park is breathtaking. Admission for each of these classes is $30 per child and $55 for adults. All materials are provided. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 to register.

Another event which will be held at Tunkhannock’s Riverside Park is “Celebrate Our River Day” on Saturday, July 23rd from 2:00-5:00 pm. Included in the day’s activities is an outdoor bluegrass/folk music concert on the “River Keepers Tour” featuring John Hazard and the Floaters. Environmental organizations including the Tunkhannock Tree Association, Wyoming County Conservation District, Tunkhannock Riverside Park Commission, North Branch Land Trust, Countryside Conservancy, Friends of Miller Mountain, and Bowman’s Creek Watershed Association will have booths set up to educate families about the river and the environment. This will be a great day out for families. Bring a picnic lunch, learn about the environment, and enjoy some music and the park. The park has a playground and willow dome for kids to play in, a basketball court, walking paths, and boat access to the river. Admission is free. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 for more information. This event is sponsored by Tunkhannock Riverside Park and the Wyoming County Cultural Center/Dietrich Theater.
