At The Dietrich

Okay. Breathe a sigh of relief! Two new films coming in this week. Praise be! We’d had about enough of the last two. So in the Murray we have “The Forty Year Old Virgin” which is, if you can believe the reviews, a witty, funny little sex-comedy. It is R rated and we won’t be letting kiddies in to see it. Sorry, guys, but we think this one may have rather grown-up themes. I haven’t seen it and I don’t know if Jeffrey has, so I can’t give you a sense of what it’s really like. It’s a sleeper hit and got good reviews, so come check it out - - if you’re seventeen or older.

In the Evans we are opening Reese Witherspoon in “Just Like Heaven.” You know, Reese Witherspoon is one of those delightful actresses who is always a pleasure to watch no matter what kind of movie she’s in. This one is a love story with the main character not being alive. Like all movies with that theme (Ghost, Truly Madly Deeply, A Guy Named Joe) they are filled with the deepest longing known to us - - to be able to see or touch or speak to a loved one who has gone on before us. Now this is listed as a light comedy/romance, so come enjoy a good old-fashioned love-story. Ladies, this one’s for you.

Only forty-five tickets left for gala night. Call in soon, folks. You don’t want to miss it. With the super food from five of the areas top restaurants and dessert by the masters of Epicurean Delight and of course our very own Jeffrey joining us, this will be a night to remember. And don’t forget you can join us for breakfast with Jeffrey at the Prince at nine o’clock in the morning. If twenty-five people sign up then the Prince will do a buffet. Otherwise, we’ll just order whatever we want off the menu. This is a chance to ask someone who has been in the movie business for over thirty years, anything you’d like to ask. So do join us for a wonderful morning. For both gala and breakfast, call 996-1500 to make your reservations.

Some of you have asked me which films I am particularly excited about, and as usual I have to tell you - - all of them! Once again Jeffrey has chosen a wondrous array of the finest art films of the past six months. But there are three I am particularly anxious to see: Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, Watermarks and Downfall. The first, because Enron is the epitome of corporate greed coupled with a total lack of ethics. Enron ruined so many lives, brought down a governor and shook America’s faith in big business. It looks to be fascinating. Watermarks, about the young Jewish Olympic swimmers banned from the Olympics by Hitler and the gang looks to be one of the most interesting films we will show. And Downfall is a film made by young German filmmakers about the last days of Hitler. Once again, there is this incredible combination of evil and madness that tells the followers of a vicious lunatic that he has the answers to life’s questions. Simply unbelievable. And yet it happened. Oh yeah, and Murderball. What a fascinating concept. Paraplegics playing rugby. So, so cool. And the little film from Bhutan (can you believe you’re going to see a film from Bhutan in downtown Tunkhannock???) called Travelers and Magicians. Oops. See what’s happening? I could go down the entire list. In fact, maybe next week I will. I’ll let you know about the rest of the films and what they’re about. Of course, that’s all in the brochure or on the website, so check them out.

Now, if I don’t mention “The Fabric Made Me Do It” by Denise Nordberg, Erica will have my head. Ms. Nordberg is a quilter with wondrous stories to tell and she will be telling them at the Evans on Saturday, October 1, during the Airing of the Quilts. (Oh, and we will have vintage quilts hanging in the theater and in the Fassett studio). She is a specialist in Baltimore Album Quilts and will be teaching at Endless Mountains Quiltworks starting in November. Call 996-1500 for reservations (last years quilt show sold out so better to be safe than sorry) and the tix are an easy five bucks. Not too bad to hear a master teacher. Come hear her. She’s funny and incredibly knowledgeable. You’ll love her. Honest. Truly. Really.

See you at the Dietrich!

We are two weeks away from the Dietrich’s Third Annual Film Festival (September 30th - October 13th) and I cannot wait for opening night! The hor d’oeuvres before the movies sound delicious. And I am bound to like “Ladies in Lavender”, it stars Dames Judi Dench and Maggie Smith, so how could it be anything but entertaining. Then we’ll have sumptuous desserts by Epicurean Delight and movie director, Jeffrey Jacobs will introduce his film A Sidewalk Astronomer. After the film, he will stay to answer questions about the film and the movie industry, since he is the Dietrich Theater’s film buyer and manager of the Paris Theater in NYC. Admission to Opening Night is $25.00 and reservations are required. Call 570-996-1500 to make a reservation.

The following morning, Saturday, October 1st at 9:00 am, we will be hosting a “Meet the Director Breakfast” with Jeffrey Jacobs across the street from the theater at The Prince Hotel. Jeffrey will be available to continue answering questions about the movie industry and film making over breakfast. Space is limited, so call 570-996-1500 to make your reservation. If you are interested in festival movie times, visit our website www.dietrichtheater.com or call us and we will send you a brochure.

October 1st, not only is the second day of the film festival in Tunkhannock, but is also “Airing of the Quilts” Day. To see quilts hung with care on houses and businesses in downtown Tunkhannock on an autumn day is beautiful. Last year, the Dietrich took part in “Airing on the Quilts by hosting an antique quilt show in our gallery throughout October and presenting “Seven Quilts for Seven Sisters”. This year we plan to do something similar. On October 1st at 11 am, Denise Nordberg, quilt instructor, lecturer, and author will take us on a quilting adventure as she shares stories and slides about the art of quilting in a presentation called “The Fabric Made Me Do It”. Tickets are $5.00 and can be purchased by calling 570-996-1500.

Denise Nordberg has been quilting since 1979 and loves all aspects of the craft. She has been part of a weekly quilting group since then, is a member and has been an officer of the Pennsylvania Quilters guild. She has taught in local quilt shops, helped document the quilts in The State Museum of Pennsylvania and is an author of Saved For the People of Pennsylvania, based on the quilts in the State Museum's quilt collection. She will begin teaching a course in Baltimore Album style appliqué at Endless Mountain Quiltworks in Tunkhannock starting in November.

We will also feature antique quilts from Wyoming County throughout October in our William Earnshaw Gallery. And for one day only on October 1st we will have a special exhibit of Baltimore Album Quilts made by local quilters in our Peg Fassett Performance Studio.

And just a reminder, there is still time to sign up for many of our classes including “Tile Making”, “Discovering Great Artists”, Mommy & Me Mixed Media”, “Pottery & Sculpture”, “Jewelry for Kids” and more!
