At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

I have a real goodie for you art lovers this week! We’re bringing in Roman Polanski’s Oliver Twist. I am so excited about it. It’s a grand adaptation of the Dickens novel - - showing Victorian England for the slimy place it was. Children had no rights and no consideration in those wicked days and Dickens spent a lifetime trying to change that particular brand of immorality. It is a visually stunning film and very, very faithful to the original story. It’s PG13 so it could be viewed by children, but we don’t recommend it for those under twelve. It’s harsh and uncompromising picture of a child’s life in Victorian England will be way too harsh for sensitive young ones. But adults who love art films should be lining up to see this one. I’m trying to squeeze in a few more great adult films before the blockbuster season starts and Hollywood takes over (er…to quote Seinfeld… “not that there’s anything wrong with that”).

One final week of Wallace and Gromit. If you haven’t seen it yet, please do bring the kiddies. It’s very, very dear and clever and well done. The kids will like it a lot, even if they don’t know what a “were-rabbit” is. (Like I do.)

The next week we have the captivating Antonio Banderas and the exquisite Catherine Zeta-Jones in The Legend of Zorro, a film that looks to be as much fun as it gets. Pure spoofy grand adventure entertainment.

So, for all of you who have asked me what’s going on with the lot next door, we are as close to owning it as you can get without owning it. We put a deposit on it about a year ago and are just waiting for the final D.E.P. clearance. That should come momentarily, we hope. And then our fund-raiser extraordinaire (the dashing Frank Oliver) has come up with the plan to ask three hundred people for one thousand dollars apiece, which will pay for the lot and not have us go into the capitol campaign heavily burdened with debt.

So you will see a sign on the property as soon as we own it, and you will se ads on-screen telling you that you can “buy” that lot for one thousand dollars. And that your donation is tax-deductible. Pretty clever. I wouldn’t have thought of it (which is why nobody pays me to raise money) but so far it seems to be working great. Eventually we will probably put a remembrance there for the donors - - a plaque or some bricks or whatever. We don’t know. But something. And won’t it be a great day when that ugly gas station is gone and the theater has expanded and we have a tree or two there? Oh my, we have such plans for that lot! Such plans.

So, on a serious note and one that’s very close to my heart, I was talking to Deborah at Interfaith this morning. (As many of you know, I ran that dear little agency for about fifteen years.) The agency is doing fine and it’s chugging along as it always did, but the charity monies available to it have been severely cut. Remember that Interfaith brings in its money by selling used items in the thrift store. Sales have been down for the past year. Part of that is Salvation Army, part is that disposable income for the poor has been slashed and burned by the price of gas.

So, I want to remind you of this - - Salvation Army is a terrific organization and they do good work in this county. But Interfaith is home grown, and every dime you give them is spent here, not just a percentage. Every dime. They can respond quickly and generously to a county resident in trouble, no matter what that trouble is. But they can only be as responsive as their bank account allows.

So, when you’re donating clothing, remember Interfaith Boutique. When you are going to give a few charity bucks away, remember Interfaith Friends. When you want to do some thrift store buying, remember Interfaith is still here and runs a good, clean shop. Open late Wednesdays for your convenience. I know folks have been sending money to disaster victims all over the world. But please, please remember your own as the holiday season approaches.

Fuel oil is going to be very, very difficult for the poor to purchase. The price of gasoline has handicapped their purchasing power in a thousand difficult ways. Please help Interfaith out by donating money, clothing, shopping there, or whatever you can do. It puts stars in your heavenly crown - - and we all need those, don’t we?

See you at the Dietrich!

Tonight Dr. Sheldon Spear will be at the theater for his presentation “Northeastern Pennsylvania Children in the Age of Anthracite” at 7:00 pm. Dr. Spear has given presentations at the Dietrich for a few years now. He is just a wealth of information about this region. This time his talk will focus on the lives of children during the heyday of anthracite in northeastern PA. He will deal with topics such as health problems, child labor, education, recreation, and delinquency, with emphasis on what is traditionally called the working class. Join us for this free talk. Reservations are not required.

And tomorrow, Mary Baker will be back for her second session of “Fun For Tots” from 10:30 - 11:30 am. The kids love to sing and dance along to the songs she performs, and they hang onto every word of her story telling. This series will continue each Thursday through November 3rd. This event is geared toward children ages five and under. Admission is free. “Fun for Tots” has been sponsored by the Tunkhannock Junior Women’s Club.

Another activity we have for children in that age group is “Mommy and Me Mixed Media” for three and four year olds. Instructor Amy Colley takes you and your little ones on an adventure into the visual arts. Young artists experience painting, sculpture, drawing, and paper arts along with mom, dad, or their caregivers each Monday. Admission is $25.00 for four classes. Call the theater at 570-996-1500 for more information or to register.

For children aged 8 to adult, we will start our first intergenerational “Pantomime Workshop”. Artist-in-residence, Rand Whipple will teach students the performance art of pantomime through a series of mime techniques. You will learn how to focus your concentration and coordination to tell a story without words. Participants will also learn how to moonwalk and make invisible walls. Class dates are November 1, 7, 8, 14, 15, 22, December 6, 7, 8, and performances on December 9th. We will offer two sessions, an afternoon session from 4:30 - 6:00 pm and an evening session from 7:00 - 8:30 pm. This class will culminate with a Christmas in Our Hometown performance of “Weird, Wild, and Wonderful - A Look at the Holiday Season” with Box of Light Theatre. Admission to the class is $60.00. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 for more information and to register.

With this skill, you then can make bracelets and necklaces. You do not need previous crocheting knowledge to enroll in this class. Admission is $35.00, all materials are provided. Space is limited, so call 570-996-1500 to register.

Later in November, Sharon McArdle will be at the Dietrich to teach a one-time “Painting on Glass” workshop for adults or students ages 13 and up.
