At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

Oh my goodness! I have so much to tell you today that I just don’t think I’ll have the proper space to do it in! So if I seem a little rushed writing this, it’s because I’m going to try to get everything in because I don’t want you to miss even one tiny little thing that’s going on at the Dietrich.

I guess I’d best start with the movies. We have two goodies for you this week. We have the incredible Catherine Zeta-Jones and the soooo smooth Antonio Banderas starring in the swashbuckling, fun and ever so fanciful Legend of Zorro. This is pure silliness and both of them have proven themselves to be comic actors with perfect timing. It’s fine to bring the kids and it’s a good start to the big fall season. Come on down. There’s popcorn with your name on it!

Then we have the ultimate chick flick. Okay, guys, we don’t want to hear it. I only bring in chick flicks once in a great while, but if it’s good enough I do try. And this one, In Her Shoes, is a goody. Our Erica, who is very tough on movies, loved it. It’s a sweet, funny, sad little story about sisters and all the complexities thereof. Come see it ladies. Come with a bunch of your pals, buy a little popcorn and a chocolate bar and sink into our comfy seats and watch a movie that will touch your hearts. The guys can be home watching football. See? It all works out.

I wish you all could have been with us Sunday afternoon when twenty-two of us drove to Scranton to see Northeast Theater’s production of Over The River and Through The Woods at the old Hotel Jermyn. First, let me say, that the renovations on the building are superb! It’s absolutely elegant. Minimalist, clean of line, exquisite in it’s stark simplicity. I loved it! And the play was not what I expected at all. I thought we were going to see a little light farce. No, no, no, no. This was very, very funny, but light it wasn’t.

How many of you saw Peggy Sue Gets Married starring Nicholas Cage (one of his first films) and Kathleen Turner? There’s a scene in it where she is able to go back through time and visit with her now long departed grandparents. Rex Reed, the great movie critic, said of that scene - - “I watched it through a veil of tears.” Well, that’s how I saw this play. It’s about how different generations see each other, how they love even when they don’t understand, and how old age and death tear from us the dear ones we cherish most. There were times I wanted to simply throw myself on the floor sobbing, it was that emotional. And then just as I’d think I couldn’t breathe because it was so sad, I’d find myself laughing out loud because it was so funny.

David Zarko and company did a superb job. Simply superb. This is theater as good as you’ll find in New York and we intend to make many more trips in the future to see their productions. We all loved it. Keep them in mind the next time you want to see a live production. These people are right here in our backyard, so let’s support them. Their website is thenortheasttheater.us. Look ‘em up. You’ll be so glad you did!

Then, of course, we all ate at Amore in Clarks Summit. What fun. We could talk about the play and movies and heaven-knows-what. Good drink, good food, good conversation. Is that as good as it gets, or what?

Okay. So we are going to the Big Apple on November 30 (a Wednesday) on a Sheraton bus. We decided not to book in a play - - the two we wanted were sold out til spring and sooooo pricey. So we decided that we would charter a bus for folks who would just like to go in and look at the Christmas decorations, go to the Metropolitan to see the incredible Christmas tree, shop a little or go to a play (the cheap tix line is right on 42nd street) or whatever. Then at five the bus will pick everyone back up and we head to Carmine’s for a luxurious meal and wonderful conversation. One hundred bucks a person will give you a great day, so please join us. Our NYC trips are soooo fun.

Just one more thing... Pantomime, ages 8 to adult starts November 1 and runs through Dec. 9. Rand Whipple is teaching it and it’s a wonderful creative outlet for children and adults. I’ll tell you more about it next week. (See? I told you I’d never fit all this in.)

For reservations for the bus trip and/or pantomime call 996-1500.

See you at the Dietrich!

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

Last Wednesday night, we all enjoyed Dr. Sheldon Spear’s presentation “Northeastern Children in the Age of Anthracite”. Children lived very different lives in the age of anthracite. A few people at the talk had relatives that worked in the mines and shared their family stories. And there were also a several young people at the lecture who had questions about the coal industry in our area. We can’t wait for Dr. Spear’s next talk.

And our “Fun For Tots: Stories and Songs with Mary Baker” continues to grow. Please join us for the final two sessions, tomorrow and Thursday, November 3rd from 10:30 – 11:30 am. Admission is free. We’d like to send out a thank you to the Tunkhannock Junior Women’s Club for helping to sponsor this series.

Now a couple of our Dietrich Theater employees are really into making jewelry and are looking forward to a “Bead Crocheting” Workshop at the Dietrich on November 2 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. Jeanne Browning will teach students to crochet with seed beads to create a key fob. Once you learn the skill of bead crocheting, you can apply that skill to creating necklaces and bracelets. A few great things about this class is you don’t have to know how to crochet before the class, it is a one shot deal so it might be easier to fit into your busy schedule, and all the materials are provided. Admission is $35.00. We only have a couple spaces left in this class, so call 570-996-1500 to register.

Starting on November 1st, we will bring back artist-in-residence Rand Whipple of Box of Light Theatre for a “Pantomime Workshop”. This class series is intergenerational for adults and students ages eight and up. In the art of pantomime, you use gestures and expressions to tell a story without words. This kind of storytelling is fun and a great way for children to learn how to focus their coordination and improve their coordination. Class dates are November 1, 7, 8, 14, 15, 22, December 6, 7, 8, and performances on December 9th. This workshop will culminate with two Christmas in Our Hometown performances of “Weird, Wild, and Wonderful – A Look at the Holiday Season” with Box of Light Theatre. We will offer two classes, an afternoon session from 4:30 – 6:00 pm and an evening session from 7:00 – 8:30 pm. Admission to the class is $60.00. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 for more information and to register.

Besides our great line up of ongoing art classes for November including “Discovering Great Artists, ages 5 –12”, “Mommy & Me Mixed Media”, “Young at Art – Preschool Art”, “Open Studio for Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture”, and “Pottery and Sculpture”, the Dietrich will bring in artist Sharon McArdle for a “Painting on Glass” Workshop.
Adults and students ages 13 and up will have the opportunity to create their own unique set of wine glasses by painting different designs on them. This class will be held on Wednesday, November 16th from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. Admission is $15 plus the cost of the painting surface. Call the theater to register.

Next time I will have news for you about a Bus Trip Excursion to NYC!
