At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

Oh boy! Do I have a ton of things to tell you about today! First. For all you ladies who asked me to bring in Memoirs of a Geisha, it’s here! I’m playing Pink Panther at a good time for families, and Geisha at a good time for those who would like to have a lovely dinner at one of our fab local restaurants and then come to a 7:30-ish show. Anyway, we think we have a little of everything for you all this week.

Eight Below is still going strong here. It’s a glorious film about brave and noble and smart dogs who outwit mother nature and the fact that they find themselves suddenly abandoned and, through pure intelligence and courage, mostly survive. For those who love a grand adventure, this movie is for you.

Pink Panther continues to delight our audiences with its silliness. And I have to say there’s a lot to be said for a good laugh in a world gone increasingly grim.

And Geisha is an exquisite film. About life in another time, another culture. The book was a huge bestseller, a wondrous, sweeping romance. Oh, ladies, you are in for a treat with this one.

And next week we have Tim Allen as The Shaggy Dog. Tommy Henry said the other day that his folks had brought him to see the original at the Dietrich, and now he was going to bring his family to the Dietrich to see the remake. Is that cool or what? I wonder how many families there are who will be doing the same.

Now, in the Fassett next week we have “5 Women”, a Tom Flannery play (he wrote “God and the Ghost of Woody Guthrie” -- a big favorite here) acted by local people, directed by the wonderfully talented Agnes Cummings of the Scranton Public Theater. Our very own Esther has a part as does Sienna Layou, one of our extraordinary concession kids. Some of the five women are famous. Jenny Wade, a civilian casualty of the Civil War and Roasaleen Sands, mother of Irish martyr (or terrorist, depending on which side you’re on) Bobby Sands are the two historical figures. The other women come straight from the fertile imagination of our dear and deeply talented Tom.

One of the reasons we are so very excited about this play, is that for the first time, because we now have the Fassett studio, we can put on plays whenever we like. Having the Fassett means that we aren’t limited by what movies are coming in, how we’re going to move the schedule around (nearly impossible most of the time) or worrying about how to fill the theaters. The Fassett gives us the space and the wonderful, peaceful atmosphere in which creative endeavors simply thrive. Oooh. We are so grateful to have it! Call 996-1500 to make you reservations.

Don’t forget the showing of “Lord of the Flies” and the discussions after. The book discussions have been so exciting! It’s fun to just go in and talk about a book and ideas and know you’re not going to be tested on it afterward. Makes it a pure joy in mental acrobatics.

And don’t forget the C.A.R.E.S. Public Forum on drug addiction, suicide, accidental overdoses, and all the terrible sadness that comes from addiction in any form. Last year we held it at the Dietrich, but we needed a bigger place this year, so it’s at the school. Remember, hearts break and families are destroyed by the disease of addiction and that there is much you can learn as well as comfort to be given and received at a forum like this. Please set aside time in your busy schedule to join others in this quest for truth and hope and consolation.

Opening night of the film festival will be Mrs. Henderson Presents ® starring Judy Densch (do we ever do festivals without her?) and then, of course, incredible goodies from Epicurian Delight, followed by Neil Young: Heart of Gold. We thought something mellow might be so nice for the second film. This one doesn’t take thought, just lots and lots of feeling. I promise I’ll give you the full list next week. Reservations for first night - - 996-1500.

See you at the Dietrich

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

Tonight the Dietrich will be brimming over with activities and entertainment. Besides showing some great family films - The Pink Panther and 8 Below, we will have a Painting on Glass class in our Dorothy G. Sheldon Art Studio and our fourth “Lord of the Flies” book discussion in the Peg Fassett Performance Studio. So much activity - I love it! Tonight at 7:00 pm, we will discuss “What is our Role in Nature?” in regard to Golding’s novel. Next Wednesday, we will wrap up this series with two showings of the classic movie, “Lord of the Flies” at 1 pm and 7 pm. Admission is free. After the 7 pm showing, please join us for the discussion “Reading a Movie, What is the Grammar of Film?” with Dr. Warren Bareiss.

Then on Saturday, March 4th, at 11 am, please join us for the funny “Who dunnit?” play, “Get a Clue?” for the entire family, performed by the Dietrich’s own After School Players. For the past eight weeks, twenty middle school and high school students in this theatre workshop have learned the ins and outs of the theatrical arts. “Get a Clue!” is an audience participation mystery. We always have a great time at these performances. It is fun for family and friends to see all of the cast’s hard work that went in the performance. Admission is $3.00.

Other theatrical presentations in March include four performances of the Tom Flannery play “5 Women”. See how five women become extraordinary through their life circumstances. In these five women you will see characteristics of yourself as well as other strong women you know. Join us for these performances on Fridays, March 10th and 17th and Saturdays, March 11th and 18th in the Peg Fassett Performance Studio at 7:30 pm. What a great way to celebrate Women’s History Month! Come out for these great productions directed by Agnes Cummings. Tickets are $10 and can be reserved by calling 996-1500.

Our next mosaic class is also coming up. Starting on Thursday, March 9th from 7:00 - 8:30 pm, learn how to make a functional mosaic on the piece of furniture of your choice. This four-week class will show you how to integrate mosaics into your home décor. Admission is $45. Call the theater to register.
