At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

Oh my goodness! What a night it was! The Evans was chock full of movie folks and they had come for a good time. Mrs. Henderson Presents did not disappoint. What a glorious film. Judy Densch simply has one of the most beautiful and expressive faces God ever fashioned. For those of you who haven’t seen it yet, make sure you catch it before it’s gone. Sure, it’ll be out in video in the blink of an eye, but seeing it in your living room on a little screen will not do this picture justice. The costuming and sets cry out for the majesty of the movie theater and the story needs to be seen with a crowd who will laugh and cry with you as the story movies on. It’s a movie that stays with you and you think about for many days afterward. Don’t miss this gem while it’s here.

Oh, yeah. The opening night. So after Mrs. Henderson, we had the totally gorgeous and super delicious desserts by Epicurian Delight. Each year it seems they only get better. And this year they added the most delicious fresh fruit. It was all so good and so beautiful! Honestly, their food is a treat for the senses - - it looks magnificent and it tastes divine!

After everyone was sated on desserts we played the mellow Neil Young’s Heart of Gold. For those who love his music (and who doesn’t?) it’s simply a recording of the making of the Prairie Wind album. Simple and straightforward, it is a mix of familiar Neil Young songs and new ones. It’s lovely. Simply lovely.

So what other films should you see? I’ll tell you my favorites so far. Believe it or not, at the top of my list is the little movie from New Zealand, The World’s Fastest Indian, starring Sir Anthony Hopkins. Oh, my oh my. This is one of those sweet little gems of a movie that is simply perfect. And believe me, you don’t have to give a hang about motorcycles to love this one. Hopkins performance is so fine and the story is so touching and wildly triumphant that it packs a wallop way beyond the size of the film. It is a must-see. Honest. (And thank you Jay and Keith for putting me onto this movie - - I would never have booked it if you hadn’t called my attention to it.)

I liked Why We Fight a lot, although it is very discouraging to say the least. It harkens back to Dwight Eisenhower’s final speech as President when he warned the nation about the emerging military-industrial complex. His words were prophetic and the film is frightening as it shows a tangled web between huge companies and politicians (of both parties). It’s a fine film to see, although it leaves you wondering what to do…what to do.

Those were my favorites so far. I’m looking forward to Cache and Sophie Scholl. Our Stephen said that Ballet Russes is simply wondrous, and I hope to see that at its next showing. He said it is a gorgeous, gorgeous film and that he saw many of those dancers when he was a child. For those who love the ballet, now is your chance to see this wistful tip of the hat to a time that was and is no more.

Attendance has been fabulous! We are thrilled. You never know how these odd little films will be accepted, but the crowds have been excellent. And our new computerized ticketing machine has been phenomenal! It allows you to buy tickets in advance for any show at any time, so you can buy for three films that day and not have to come back to the ticket booth for every film. Cool, hmmm?

On May 5 we open Mission Impossible 3 and Hoot. Hoot is from the book by one of my favorite authors in the world, Carl Hiasson. It’s for kids and it’s about the environment and just a generally good movie. Be sure to set aside some time to bring your eight or nine year olds through maybe their early teens to see this movie. It will give you lots to talk about with them.

One week of festival left. Come see these grand movies while you can. They’re sooooo good!

See you at the Dietrich!

Live at The Dietrich

By

Our first lecture in the Art Through the Ages Seminar was fabulous. Ed McMullen’s excitement about the arts is contagious. This series brings ancient art to life. I am looking forward to tonight’s talk about “The Great Awakening (Empires Ascendant)”, a discussion of Ancient Greek, Etruscan, Roman, Early Christian, Byzantine and Islamic Art. Images will include the Parthenon, Winged Victory, Mosaics, Taj Mahal, and Colosseum. etc. As one of last weeks participants said, art history is much more fun when you don’t have to take notes. Admission is $5.00. For more information about this series, call the Dietrich at 996-1500.

Last Thursday we had a great turn out for our two Tom Knight Puppet Shows. We presented these shows in celebration of April: The Month of the Young Child. Almost 400 children and families came out to dance and sing along with Tom Knight and his puppets. Besides offering live entertainment for little ones, the Dietrich offers Mommy & Me Mixed Media and Preschool Art classes, which cater to their developmental level. This is a great introduction into to arts. Students work with watercolor, collage, pottery and sculpture, and more. Instructor, Amy Colley has a way of bringing out the creativity in all of her students. Their artwork in our “Art for Us” exhibit is so colorful and cheerful. Classes start during the first week in May, admission is $25. Call the theater for more information.

We are now approaching the second week of the Dietrich’s Spring 2006 film festival and there are still many movies I hope to catch. I plan on attending the first showing of The White Countess this Saturday night. For your convenience, festival movie times are available on our website www.dietrichtheater.com.

Our next Drumming Workshop will be held next Saturday night, May 6th at 7:00 pm. Master Drummer, Maxwell Kofi will lead the group in the basics of African Drumming. This class is great for teens and adults. Each participant has a drum to use. It is amazing to hear how when simple rhythms are combined they make beautiful and intricate songs. Admission is $25.00 per person. Call the theater at 996-1500 to preregister.

And jewelry classes are coming up next month. We are offering quite a variety from metal working to glass fusing to beadwork! Now is the time to sign up.
