Boy! Do we have two terrific films for you!!! Starting this Friday we will be playing the two top films in the country. (I don’t know which will take the number one spot, but one of the two of them will for sure.) Jeffrey, our booking genius, got us not only The DaVinci Code, but also Dreamworks little marvel of animation, Over The Hedge. Now, how is that for an exciting weekend? (And something for everyone.)

Okay, let’s start with DaVinci – Dan Brown’s little conspiracy theory thriller that has sold over thirty million copies here in America. For history buffs and conspiracy theorists, this is the doozy of all doozies. Like Harry Turtledove, who writes wonderful alternative history (like, what if they’d wakened Hitler when the allies were coming for the Battle of the Bulge and he’d had his panzer divisions waiting?), Dan Brown decided to take a little truth, a little myth, a lot of made-up for fun and turn it into a blockbuster novel. Brown isn’t any kind of literary writer, but he’s a page-turning, plot-driven, master of suspense. For those who have read the book, remember that no movie can ever get in all the details you’ll find on the page, but this will give you the overview, and hopefully the tension, of the novel. For those who haven’t read it, remember that this is complex and fun and makes no claim to being actual history. So don’t take it too seriously. It’s alternate history, not fact proven history. So relax and come to see Tom Hanks and Ron Howard do their stuff. And, to quote the late and so-great Bette Davis - - “Fasten your seatbelts - - it’s going to be a bumpy ride.”

And as the compleat antidote to such tension and darkness, we have Dreamworks’ Over The Hedge. Although we think that Cars is going to be the biggest animation of the summer, there are those who disagree and believe this will top Cars. I have no idea. All I know is that this is from the folks who did Shrek and you can take that to the bank! These are master storytellers and animators. There won’t be a better movie to bring the kids to all summer, so bring them to see a movie you will thoroughly enjoy, too. (I always thought that adults liked Shrek even more than the kids.)

So now I’m going to give you the good news and the bad news about these movies. The good news is that we have them, of course. The bad news (well, not really bad) is that DaVinci will play in the Evans and Over the Hedge will play in the Murray. The reason for that is the fact that Davinci can only be scheduled for a few shows a day since it runs so long (over two and a half hours) and Hedge is only 83 minutes, so we can show it every two hours, bam bam bam! Now here’s the good news about it. We have gone to automated ticketing and you can now buy your tickets in advance for ANY SCHEDULED SHOW! (I’m not shouting at you – honest. I just wanted that to register. You can come in when the theater is open and you can buy your ticket for, say the three o’clock on Saturday or the seven o’clock on Monday, or whenever you want to see it. That way you’re assured a seat. So, knowing that, there shouldn’t be a problem with sell-outs and you and/or your kids won’t be disappointed. Cool, hmmm?

DaVinci will probably be with us a month and Hedge will be with us for three weeks, and then we bring in Cars. Pretty good summer fare, don’t you think?

I want to say a huge thank you to Procter and Gamble for their most generous gift to our expansion. We are very lucky to live near a plant that provides so much good work for people, puts out such excellent product and is in turn generous to the community it is a part of. Thank you for your kindness. We are trudging along with our fund-raising for the lot. Please remember us with your philanthropy this year. There are so many things we want to add to our schedule, but we need to pay off the lot first. (Won’t it be nice when it’s paid off and I don’t have to write about it any more?)

See you at the Dietrich.

Tonight please join us for our final discussion in our “Art Through the Ages” series with Ed McMullen at 7:00 pm. What a great journey it has been learning about artwork through the ages as mankind developed! I especially enjoyed learning about Egyptian art. I am always impressed by the wealth of knowledge Ed has in the arts. We’ve had great attendance for the first four lectures. Tonight’s talk, “Birth of the Modern World”, will cover the Baroque, Rococo, Neo-Classical and Romantic periods. Ed will be discussing the artwork of Hals, Rembrandt, Rubens, Velasquez, Vermeer, Gainsborough, Renyolds, Goya, Turner, West and more. Admission is $5.00. Prior attendance is not required to enjoy tonight’s talk.

And tomorrow night, Jeanne Browning will teach a Bead and Memory Wire Bracelet Jewelry Making Class for students age 16 to adult form 7:00 - 9:00 pm. These jewelry classes are so great. You would be amazed with the beautiful jewelry that is made in just a matter of a couple of hours. Some of the staff at the Dietrich have really gotten into the jewelry making craze. It seems like every other week, our theater manager comes into work with a new necklace she has made. There are still a couple of openings in tomorrow’s class, so you still have time to register by calling the theater at 996-1500. Admission is $25, all materials are provided.

Next Tuesday night, we will have a live Golden Days of Radio Players Group performance at the Dietrich's Peg Fassett Studio at 7:00 pm. Join us as we go back to those thrilling days of radio drama. The group under the direction of Valeria Paulus will perform “The Philadelphia Story” and will also bring in a little local flavor with the debut of an original radio play “The Mystery of the Steamtown Ghost” by R.A. Comunale, M.D. Their performances are delightful and nostalgic! Admission is free.

Another group that I wanted to tell you a little bit about is our Writers’ Group. They meet Thursday nights from 7:00 - 8:30 pm. In this groups, writers of all levels experience meet to learn the craft of writing as they write. Participants work on their own individual projects, some write novels, others poetry, one group member is even writing her memoirs, and every six weeks a writing exercise is assigned for everyone to work on. Members have the opportunity to read part of their work and receive feedback on it about every three weeks. It’s a fun group and admission is free. For more details about the Writer’s Group, please call 996-1500.
