Penn State Wilkes-Barre, in association with the Dietrich Theater, proudly presents this five-week film series that will delight every member of your family as we look and listen critically to the music that has accompanied some of America's best-loved films. Each showing will have a pre-film lecture and a stimulating post-film discussion. Participants earn continuing education credits upon series completion.

July 22 - 1776 (1972/PG/142 minutes)

It's the Spring of 1776, and delegates to the Continental Congress are attempting to develop a statement on the proposed separation of the American Colonies from Great Britain. Set to music are William Daniels, Howard Da Silva and Ken Howard robustly portraying our founding fathers. This widely-acclaimed Jack L. Warner film is based on the long-running Broadway play and is guaranteed to have you flag-waving before the second song is done! Pure patriotic joy for the whole family.

July 29 - Wall-E (2008/G/98Minutes)

A lonely robot on earth eight hundred years in the future looks for signs of life and redemption of the environment. His actions will determine future sustainability of the planet. Musical contributions abound from Jerry Herman, Bobby McFerrin and Louis Armstrong to name just several. This Walt Disney Pictures/Pixar Animation production delights us with a wide range of musical offerings.

August 12 - Out of Africa (1985/PG/161 Minutes)

The music of John Barry, including the music of Wolfgang Amadeaus Mozart, frames this broad, sweeping saga of love and romance. Meryl Streep and Robert Redford star in this story of colonial Kenya. Listen and watch how the music accents the turning points of the film and underscores the broad sweeping African landscape.

August 19 - To Kill a Mockingbird (1962/NR/129 Minutes)

The film that was regarded as Gregory Peck's personal favorite creative work begins tenderly with hints of music in childhood and progresses through the darkness of the Radley house, the confrontation at the Sheriff's office and through to the conclusion of the film. You read the book in school, now, relive it on the big screen complete with Calpurnia, Scout, Gem and Atticus Finch.

August 26 - Star Wars (1977/PG/121Minutes)

Here's the film that started the legend and legacy! Soar with the majestic composition and scoring of John Williams as Luke Skywalker, Hans Solo, Obe-Wan Kanobi, Princess Leia and Chewbacca fight to make the universe safe. Live the excitement of Star Wars over again on the big screen just like the first time!
