At The Dietrich

What a weekend! Hoo-boy! Cars is a smash hit and deservedly so. I watched it on Friday night with a theater full of wee ones and I have to tell you - - they were really good. I thought maybe, because the movie is so long, that they might lose interest and get fussy, but they didn’t. For the most part the kids in the theater watched it all the way through and laughed in all the right places.

It’s a grand film. Just hearing Paul Newman’s wonderful aged voice is a treat, and the film’s message is clear – the glitz we spend our lives chasing is of little value compared to the sweetness of old friends and a righteous life. When Route 66 was bypassed by the interstate, many small towns whose lives depended on the commerce brought by the traffic flow, ceased to exist. They slowly, over the years, just faded away. This is the story of one of those towns, of a hip young race driver and an old Hudson, once king of the world, now bitter and alone in a world that has turned its back on him. The young hot-shot learns lessons of friendship and love and the old-timer learns to live again in a new and maybe better world. Lessons we all need to learn, no matter our age.

So bring the kids, and if you don’t have kids come alone. I think the message is more poignant if you’re grown up. (Well, we’re never really all that grown-up, are we?) I absolutely loved it, and I am not a huge fan of animation. But once again Pixar has proven itself a master of the art. The background scenes are so real you have to keep reminding yourself that A. cars don’t talk and B. the waterfall isn’t real. It’s that incredible!

Along with that, playing in the Murray this weekend, is The Lake House. For all of you who love a little sci-fi romance, this is the movie for you. (One of my favorite totally corny films fits into that category – Somewhere In Time with Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeves.) Sandra Bullock is a true charmer no matter what she appears in and Keanu Reaves is as good looking as it gets. It’s a fun little romance to watch, munch popcorn and suspend your disbelief. It’s only with us for twelve days (then Superman comes to call) so catch it while you can!

We need to congratulate our dear board President Jodi Armstrong on the birth of her baby girl – Sarah. Jodi spends so much of her valuable time (she has three little ones under five) at meetings with us and writing grants and just keeping us focused (at our age some of us tend to drift a bit) so we are very, very happy for her that she has delivered a healthy, beautiful baby girl. Rest now, Jodi. You deserve it.

And speaking of babies – well – let me tell you about Georgia and her kids. Sunday night a little stray kitty came up on our outside ramp and had four little baby kitties. Our kids and Mary Francis found them and put them in a box and fixed an outside shelter for her and gave her food. But when Sandy and Margie and I went down to see her in her shelter outside we decided that was not a proper place for a new Mom. So I picked up the purring Mamma and Sandy carried the baby box upstairs to the office. Then a brief trip to Bricks for food and litter and all the rest of the paraphernalia new babies and Mammas need.

We named her Georgia Dietrich (an homage to the man who built the theater, of course) and, since she had the babies in a movie theater, they are Clark (Gable), Jimmy (Stewart), Johnny (Wayne) and Marilyn (Monroe). In six weeks they will need a home, as will Georgia because one of our staff has allergies. Keep them in mind – they’re gorgeous! And Mamma is the sweetest thing on four legs. Starved for food and attention and so, so gentle.

As I said, what a week! Babies, babies everywhere! Does it get better than that?

See you at the Dietrich!

Now, I want to tell you about a brand new program we are offering this summer. And it’s free of charge! On Wednesday, July 5th through Friday, July 7th, the Dietrich is offering Dance Workshops for boys and girls between the ages of two and twelve with Judy Weist of The Stage Door Dance Studio in Tunkhannock.
