At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

Wow! There are so many cool things coming up at the Dietrich that I simply will not have room to tell you about everything. Especially if I go on and on telling you how I won’t have enough room. Therefore, perhaps I should get right to the nitty gritty this week. (That will be different, don’t you think?)

Sow we finally, finally got The Devil Wears Prada! The book was such fun and the movie has been reviewed as being waaay better than the book! Meryl Streep gets to be a total witch diva, baring her claws at anyone who threatens her fashion editor status. Now, although anyone is welcome to see it, ladies – this one is especially for you. What fun to watch an aging and brilliant actress strut her stuff, what fun to see the inner workings of the world of high fashion, what fun to see the bad, bad boss get hers! Come with a bunch of your gal-pals, buy some popcorn, slump comfortably down in the seats and have a ball! I cannot wait to see it. (I almost went to the Cinemark to catch this one, but it felt too much like committing adultery.) It’s only here for ONE WEEK so make your plans accordingly.

Week three for Pirates of the Caribbean and it’s still going strong. People are having such fun with this one. It’s silly, senseless, and a hoot. Just seeing Johnny Depp as Capt. Jack is worth the price of admission. I think that in times of chaos (and the world is certainly chaotic at the moment) we sometimes just need to escape. I mean, what can we do about the middle east? Or Iraq? Or Afghanistan? The news gives us a steady drumbeat of oppressive facts that we are helpless to do anything about. So, when the news and the heat get to be too much, come to the movies and see some light-hearted silliness. It helps. Honest.

Now don’t forget Celebrate Our River Day. The temperatures are going to be in the mid-eighties. How lovely. (I can’t believe I’m going to miss it. I’m going to a conference in NYC for the weekend and won’t be here for River Day. I’m so mad about that!) Food, music and our beautiful Riverside Park. Could it possibly be better than that?

Bus trip! Bus trip! Saturday July 29th. To the Everhart for a private tour. And then a box lunch. And then time to explore Nay Aug Park. All for $5.00 per person. Now, how fun is that? Do come. You’ll have such a good time. Bring the kids. It’s that kind of day.

Tuesdays, August 8 and 15, our very own Gloria Fassett is going to teach Sudoku. Calisthenics for the brain. FREE. Won’t cost you a dime and you find out how to work these challenging mental puzzles. I can’t wait to take it. (Although I think Gloria will have her hands full trying to teach me anything with a number in it.) I’m told it’s not really about numbers. It’s about logic. (Hmmm. Perhaps this isn’t the puzzle for me.) Do come.

Little public service announcement. Those terrific reindeer that graced our town for the last eight years or so are no longer usable because the poles are gone and they won’t work on anything else. So, Kiwanis would like to sell them. Why don’t you think about buying a little piece of T’town history for your own yard or business? Kiwanis is asking $150.00 apiece for them (less than half of what they paid for them) and will give an even bigger discount if you buy them in bulk. Remember, it’s Kiwanis that brings us the county fair, so they’re good guys. If you can help them out a little and decorate for Christmas, well, why not? (Call Doug Gay or Skip Felker for more info.

We’re starting to really roll on the lot payment. Please help us get it paid for by the new year. We needja, folks. Help. (That’s said in a very pathetic tone of voice.)

Kittens are now four weeks old. In two weeks two of them need a home. Don’t you have room for a darling Dietrich kitten?

See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

Students had a blast in All About Drawing Camp last week with instructor Amy Colley! And boy, did they learn a lot! During the week, campers learned how to draw and shade shapes. Then they were taught how to draw and shade people’s faces. Using what they learned from the first two lessons, campers had the opportunity to draw their own unique monsters. Students made dragons, vampires and even an alien caterpillar. And finally on the last day, students painted their monsters. What made this class so neat is that students were taught how to draw from real life and also how to draw from their imaginations. It was a good mix.

Our Everhart Exploration classes also had an excellent start. We had full classes for our first day. Students learned all about birds from ostriches to bald eagles to parrots. They learned about the types of foods and climates the birds live in. Then students were asked to create their own bird. It could be made up of the characteristics of a couple of different birds. You should have seen all the colors participants used in their bird projects!

At the end of the month we will be taking a bus trip to the Everhart Museum in Scranton on Saturday, July 29th from 9:30 am – 2:00 pm. I invite you to come along! Five dollars a person will give you a bus ride, a private tour of the Everhart, a box lunch from Heavenly Ham, and a memorable afternoon! Space is limited on the trip so sign up soon! Call the Dietrich at 996-1500 to register.

And this Saturday, July 22 from 2:00 – 5:00 pm, enjoy some live music in Tunkhannock’s Riverside Park for our second annual Celebrate the River Day! We will feature John Williams and Al Purdy of “Brother John”, the Bluestone Mountain Boys bluegrass group and RetroRocket. Last year, it was a great time between the music, exhibits and activities with local environmental organizations, and a boat demonstration with David Buck of Endless Mountain Outfitters. This year food vendors will also be on hand including Chris’ Western Beef and the Weiner Wagon Express. The park also has a playground and a Wee Willow Dome for kids to play in. It should be a fun afternoon outside for all ages! Call the Dietrich at 996-1500 for more information.
