Okay. So we all know how to do Sudoku now. Really! Okay. So maybe we’re not exactly experts in the field. But we can sort of do it. Sometimes. With a little help. But this I know --whether we ever master it or not, it’s a cool thing to do. You have to really concentrate and it’s fun. We wanted to make sure we thanked Gloria for taking the time to teach so many of us something that is supposed to exercise the brain (presupposing one has one, of course). So, thank you Gloria. We’ve had a great time and some of us can, actually, do it now.

So we had a great day here on Friday. A whole bunch of tree people came here to discuss getting grants for local tree associations and to give talks on what their communities have done with trees. Of course, Tunkhannock has such wonderful volunteers who do so much to make this town lovely. And, of course, I have to brag a little about my sister who gave one of the talks that morning. She did such a great job. Started out with a talk about how you have to love trees in order to make them such a big part of your life.

She talked about the grand oaks and maples on our parents lawn when we were growing up. The shade they provided, the swing that hung from the branch, the gorgeous leaves they dropped and that Poppa raked into great jumping piles for us. Sigh. Why is it that when we grow older and so many more years separate us from our childhood, those memories become more vivid with each passing day? And the loss more painfully felt.

Well now, I think I’d better get to telling you about the movies, don’t you think? We have a really nice one from Buena Vista this week. Invincible is the true story of Vince Papale (who was actually an advisor during the making of the film) who had lost his wife, his job and most of his hope. With nothing to lose, really, this part-time bartender decided to try out for the Philadelphia Eagles. (He’d never even played college ball.)

He not only makes the team but becomes an outstanding player. Like The Rookie, or Rudy, this is an inspirational and uplifting movie. It’s a good solid family film and is rated PG. Bring the kids and come to a movie they won’t soon forget. After all, it’s a tough world out there. We could all use a little inspiration.

And for the kiddies, we are bringing in Barnyard. It’s a very dear animation about a real party animal – Otis the cow. I think the little ones will get a kick out of it. It’s also PG and is perfectly suitable for the wee ones. Expect many giggles from the kidlets as they watch the antics of these silly critters.

And for grown-ups who would like a little bit of a fright with their movie, we’re bringing in Lady In The Water, the new film from M. Night Shyamalan, about a beautiful young woman (Bryce Dallas Howard) who needs to get back from our world to her fairy tale home. Soon all the teneants in the building come to understand that they too are fairy tale characters and that the world as they know it is in danger. It stars the wonderful Paul Giamatti and is a very creepy and grown-up film. This one is not for the kiddies, and will only show at 8:30 each night (except for Wednesday).

Okay – I don’t want to be a nag, but the brochures will be in the mail today for the festival and there are only eighty tickets left for opening night. If you love that night you really must make those reservations very, very soon. We want you with us! We’d miss you if you weren’t there!

Don’t forget Singer/Songwriter’s. Wednesday, August 30. Such a lovely evening with dear friends.

See you at the Dietrich.

First and foremost, tickets for the opening night of the Fall 2006 Film Festival (September 15th at 6:00 pm) are going fast! Now is the time to get them for this extravagant event! Who can beat an evening of hors d’oeuvres, wine and desserts by Twigs and Epicurean plus the acclaimed movies “Little Miss Sunshine” and “A Prairie Home Companion”! Tickets are $30 each and can be purchased by calling 570-996-1500. Film festival movies and synopses can be found at www.dietrichtheater.com or we can send you a brochure in the mail. To receive a brochure, call the theater at 570-996-1500.

I am look forward to seeing the festival film “The Beauty Academy of Kabul”. It was an official selection of the Tribeca Film Festival and looks like a fascinating story about a group of volunteer beauticians who travel to Afghanistan to start the nation’s first Western-styled school of cosmetology after the collapse of the Taliban.

While you are at our film festival, make sure you check out our latest exhibit. It ‘s the Preview Exhibit of the North Branch Art Trail featuring the artists Brian Keeler, Ioannis Glykokoalos, Bob Lizza, Warren Furman, and John Kascht. The exhibit will be at the Dietrich through September.

Now you are probably wondering what the North Branch Art Trail is. Well, the trail features galleries, studios and museums between Wilkes-Barre, Scranton and then on up Route 6 following the Susquehanna to Wyalusing and other areas in Bradford County and the Northern Tier on the weekend of October 6, 7, and 8. The Dietrich is part of the trail and that weekend we will exhibit quilt works featuring Leslie Goeringer Rhoades’ contemporary expressions of a classic craft. If you would like to find out more about the North Branch Art Trail, you can also attend the workshop “Route 6 Road to Success” at the Inn at Nichols Village on September 5th. Our Program Director, Margie Young will take part in the workshop as a panel member in one of the workshop’s afternoon session’s “ Business Development Track: The Route 6 Artisan Trail”. For more information about the workshop call the PA Route 6 Corporation at 814-435-7706.

We also have our new cultural brochures announcing all of our fall classes and events. I’m really excited about our programming for the 9 -12 year old age group in the fine arts. This fall we are changing things up and offering more in depth courses in different mediums for that age group. In September, students can take “All About Drawing” and learn about the basic concepts of drawing including line, shape, texture, value, color and space while drawing their own masterpieces. For October, students will have the opportunity to use potter’s wheels and learn hand-building techniques as they learn about pottery and sculpture and then in November, we will offer a Drawing and Painting class. These classes are offered on Thursdays from 4:00 - 5:30 pm. For details or to register, call the theater at 570-996-1500.

Tonight we will host the Endless Mountains Digital Film Festival at 7:00 pm. I had the opportunity to see the film festival at the Keystone Theatre in Towanda on its first night. Our own projectionist, Esther Harmatz, won first prize in the category for adult filmmakers. It is bound to be a fun time and the audience will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite film. Admission is $3.00.

And don’t forget, a week from tonight we will have live music at the Dietrich! Join us for Gathering of Singer and Songwriter’s V, an evening of folk music and stories. Featured artists include Shawn Z, Tom Flannery, Lorne Clarke and Josh Pratt. Tickets are only $5.00. You can purchase your tickets that night, August 30th or by calling 570-996-1500. The concert starts at 7:30 pm!
