At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

Oliver Stone’s workhorse of a movie, his homage to the volunteers who worked so hard in the hell that was 9/11, comes to the Dietrich this Friday. I have seen it, and it’s a good movie. It’s not a great movie because, I think, Stone tried so hard to be apolitical that his passionate voice seems quelled here. Or maybe it’s just that it’s a hard subject to make a movie about. Like the assassination of John F. Kennedy a generation ago, the attacks of September 11 are frozen in time. We know exactly where we were and what we were doing. We can close our eyes and see the planes flying into the twin towers. We can see what looked like fluttering birds slip into eternity from the tower windows. It was a terrible, terrible day, and it changed everything.

Stone’s film is not about the unremitting horror. His film, unbelievable as it may seem, is about hope, and sacrifice and love. It is about two of the trapped policemen who are rescued by volunteers, working around the clock and at great personal peril. It is about never giving up hope. It is about hanging on when the chances of survival are somewhere around zero, and yet…by some miracle of faith and hope, we live to see another day.

For all the grimness surrounding the event, the movie is uplifting. When the broken bodies of the men are finally released from the rubble, there is a cheer that is, really, a prayer of thanksgiving, because their rescue means that all things are possible.

And no matter how grim things are, that is something we must believe, isn’t it? If we give up the belief that all things are possible, then we have given up on life.

And no matter how grim things may seem, life is such a gift -- we must never turn our backs on it.

I guess that’s what I want to write about this week. Not the terrors of that day nor the sad things that have happened to our country since, but the joy that surrounds us, made ever sweeter by how quickly the light can flicker and die, how in a split second, all can change. We didn’t need a terrorist attack to tell us that life is finite and that none of us know our appointed hour. We don’t need politicians to tell us to be afraid….be very afraid. We get it. There are things out there that can kill us.

But that is no reason to give in to fear and despondency and to give up on our lives before we have lived them to the fullest. Especially now, as we go into glorious autumn. What more wonderful things could we ask for than the gifts mother nature gives us at this time of year.

I want to share one of my favorite poems with you this week, because I believe that life is given to us as a gift. Pure and simple.

This poem, called Pied Beauty, is by the great Jesuit, Gerard Manley Hopkins. And to me, it says it all.

Glory be to God for dappled things –
For skies as couple-colored as a brinded cow;
For rose-moles all in stipple upon trout that swim;
Fresh-firecoal chestnut-falls; finches’ wings;
Landscapes plotted and pieced – fold, fallow, and plow;
And all trades, their gear and tackle and trim.
All things counter, original, spare, strange;
Whatever is fickle, freckled (who knows how?)
With swift, slow; sweet, sour; adazzle, dim;
He fathers-forth whose beauty is past change:
Praise Him.

See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

In film festival news, our gala night is sold out! “Little Miss Sunshine” is so highly acclaimed, I recommend catching it at some of its other show times during the festival. We also have a great addition to this fall’s festival, there will be a question and answer session with Dr. Philip Mosley of Penn State Hazleton after the 4:30 pm showing of “The Beauty Academy of Kabul” on Sunday, September 17th. It is bound to be an interesting discussion.

Besides preparing for our film festival (September 15 –28), the Dietrich is ready to kick off its fall season of classes, workshops and events. And what better way to do that then by bringing back our Second Saturday Series for Families. Each month during the school year, the Dietrich will host a free event for kids and families on the second Saturday. It’s a great way for families to connect and spend time together after a hectic week of school, work and the hustle and bustle of daily life.

September’s second Saturday is just a few days away and we will start out this series on Saturday, September 9th at 11:00 am with Kindermusik! Join us for a morning of music and movement with certified Kindermusik educator Sarah Birchard. Children between the ages of 18 months and five years old and their families will have the opportunity to play instruments, sing and dance. So come out and participate in this fun morning. For more information about this free event, call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500, and to learn more about Kindermusik, give Sarah Birchard a call at 570-965-2086.

This fall the Dietrich will also offer Mommy & Me Mixed Media for three and four year olds and Preschool Art for four to five year olds. In these visual art classes, children under the guidance of Amy Colley, M.F.A., will have the opportunity to explore the arts through different medias including collage, clay, tempera paints, watercolor and more! According to educational research, drawing, sculpting and other visual arts help develop special acuity and enhance children’s descriptive nonverbal and cognitive capabilities. These classes are also great way for children to interact with their peers in a nurturing environment. Preschool Art will be on Thursdays starting Thursday, September 14 from noon – 12:45 pm and Mommy & Me will be on Fridays starting September 15th from 10:30 – 11:15 am. Each class will run for four weeks. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 for more information or to register for these classes.

The Dietrich also offers classes for older children; one of the classes is Quilting for Kids. On Wednesday, September 13th we will start up our weekly after school quilting class. This fall, students ages 6 and up will make classic “Flying Geese” quilts. They will learn about design as they artfully mix colorful old time fabrics with ones from today, and learn basic quilting techniques from piecing, to embellishing, to binding a quilt.

This is just a sampling of what we have to offer this fall. Check out our website www.dietrichtheater.com for more class offerings.
