Wow! Can you believe it? Festival starts this week! We work on it for so long that when it finally comes it almost seems like a surprise. (Oh? It’s festival time? I thought we’d just plan forever. Or something.) Gala night has been sold out for two weeks, which makes me very happy. I am always a nervous wreck about the films I choose for opening night. I agonize over the choice and then spend the next few weeks until it’s sold out agonizing some more. What if this is the year that everyone hates the films we’ve chosen? What if this is the year no one comes? What if what if what if? But it appears that this year, once again, our dear festival attendees approve of the films we have chosen. Whew!

So I have been asked multiple times in the last few weeks what films I am looking forward to particularly. There are so many! (I do think festival choices are the most exciting films we bring in all year and each festival I think is the “best yet.”) But I’ll list a few of the films and explain why I chose them in the hopes that it will whet your appetite to come see them (especially if you’ve never tried a subtitled or indie film).

Of course, our opening night films are the gems of the festival. We chose Little Miss Sunshine because Jeffrey saw it in Sundance (I think) and loved it. Simply loved it. Said it was one of the best comedies he’s seen in years. It’s not only got a great cast and is very funny, but it’s got a profound message – that no matter how dysfunctional our family may be, if we love each other it’s okay. That’s important. So often we take offense at family members simply because they’re not like us, or don’t agree with us, or deviate from what we decide is “normal.” Well, this is a movie that celebrates the loving ties of family, the exuberance and the joy that love can bring us – no matter how wacky it may be.

I really don’t have to say why I chose Prairie Home Companion – it’s Garrison Keeler, that’s why. And he needs no more introduction than the mention of his name.

I can’t wait to see Mountain Patrol. The cinematography in Chinese films is breathtaking. There has not been one Chinese film we have shown in the past four years that has not been so beautiful that you think about it for weeks after. And this, taking us way up into the mountains of rural China will be no exception!

The Beauty Academy of Kabul sounds so intriguing. In a world apparently gone mad, a few young American beauticians decide to go to Kabul after the fall of the Taliban and teach them how to do hair and make-up. For women who have spent most of their days confined to a burka this has to be both exhilarating and deeply frightening. Both cultures have to be in for some serious shocks. How interesting is that?

The Boynton Beach Club is going to be one of my favorites. I haven’t seen it yet, but I know it is. It’s about our bodies growing older but our hearts and spirits remaining young and in need of love. Now, could there possibly be a better subject than that? Isn’t the most germane part of us the part that loves? Without love we wither and die, a shell of what could have been. This movie is about one kind of love – the kind that takes someone out of mourning and brings them front and center with a new life and a new person. Charming and funny and profound. I know I’m going to love it, and I bet you will too.

No festival would be complete without a Woody Allen film if one is available. So we bring you Scoop. Even when Woody Allen is bad he’s still better than most. And he does make me laugh. We’ll see. But I’m always willing to give him another chance – he’s that good.

Oh Lordy, I’ve run out of space. Don’t forget An Inconvenient Truth and Water (magnificent) and Wordplay and Only Human and….and… Sigh. Come see them all. You won’t regret it!

See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

The festival is almost here which means two weeks of great entertainment! Some of our festivalgoers catch all fourteen films. You see people walk out of one movie and turn around and buy a ticket for the next film. People might take a break and run up to Twigs or another local restaurant for a bite to eat, but then they are back to the theater to catch the 7 o’clock movie. I myself like to spread out seeing the festival films. I know Hildy, our Executive Director, basically camps out at the theater during the opening weekend and watches a majority of the films then. So however you catch these films, we hope you enjoy the festival!

Also starting this week are our art classes for children. Tomorrow we will launch our class series “All About Drawing for ages 9 –12. Instructor Steve Colley will walk students through the basic concepts of drawing including line, shape, texture, value, color and space while they create their own masterpieces. Classes will be held on Thursdays from 4:00 – 5:30 pm for four weeks. With this format, students will really have the opportunity to explore the media of drawing. Admission for the four classes is $35 and all materials are provided. Next month, students ages 9 –12 will have the opportunity to take Pottery and Sculpture.

For five to eight year olds, the Dietrich will offer Mixed Media with Amy Colley, M.F.A. In these classes, a new artist will be introduced each week as students learn about famous artists and create their own works using clay, tempera, charcoal, pastels and more. These classes are held on Fridays from 4:00 – 5:30 pm. Admission is $35.

And one of our new classes this fall will be square dancing! I myself have not square danced since gym class in fourth grade. It was fun, except at that age I don’t think I really liked the thought of dancing with boys! Beginner and experienced square dancers of all ages are welcome to come out. It will be led by local square dancing caller Roger Furman on Fridays in October from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. Admission is free. Even if you are not so confident about your dancing skills, I recommend giving it a try.

Another musical experience we are offering in October is Fun for Tots – Stories & Songs with Mary Baker. Mary Baker is one of our favorite singers and storytellers. The last time Mary was at the theater, she joined forces with local author and storyteller Isabel Wilner for a morning concert of poetry, stories and songs. Their performance was great. Through that and other past performances, Mary Baker has developed quite a local following! Join us on Thursdays, October 12, 19, 26 and November 2 from 10:30 – 11:30 am for mornings filled with new songs and stories. Admission is free. For more information or to register for these events and classes, call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500.
