At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

Oh…my…goodness!!! What an incredible opening to the fall film festival! Friday night was just about as perfect as a night can be! The food from Epicurean Delight and Twigs was, as you would expect, gorgeous and delicious and generous and so, so good. Our terrific concession kids were simply wonderful serving the food and making sure that everyone was taken care of. Our volunteers brought their special cheer to the evening. Really, it was perfect.

Oh yeah, the movies. They were incredible. I haven’t heard the audience laugh as hard as they did at Little Miss Sunshine since we had My Big Fat Greek Wedding. The “Sunshine” family gives new meaning to the word dysfunctional, but they are loving and decent and the script is pitch perfect. It is simply hilarious! You must make time out of your busy schedule to see it. But bring tissues – you laugh so hard you cry. Honest. And Prairie Home Companion is a sweet little film - - sort of a valentine to those of us who love the radio show. It mostly works and John C Reilly and Woody Harrellson are worth the price of admission.

And there was one more cool thing that night. We finally paid homage to Barbara Jones, the lovely lady who has kept our books for us for at least the last six or seven years (she was there before we opened). I want you to know a little about our “Miss Pink” as we call her (she’s a so pretty blonde with a penchant for wearing pink) because she is one of the people without whom the Dietrich wouldn’t be what it is, but whose work isn’t seen and therefore not acknowledged.

Barb is a severe diabetic, has been since she was twelve years old. She has to wear an ankle brace because her ankle, once broken, refused to heal properly. Her illness is whimsical and although she is very strict about her diet, it acts up sometimes. We have coke in the fridge and some kind of glycemic tablets and all sorts of things to give her should she start to fade. We know if she doesn’t come right back, we need to call the ambulance. I tell you this so that you will understand how fragile her body is.

But not her spirit – oh no no no no no! Her spirit is “Mighty Blonde,” fearless in all that she does, tireless, sweet natured, loving and infinitely kind. She has been doing our payroll, prepping the books for the yearly audit, paying all the bills, keeping all the accounts in order for all these years without being paid a dime. Not a dime. If we figured her wage at just ten dollars an hour for a twenty-five to thirty hour week for the past seven years her donation to the theater and therefore, the town, comes out way, way over one-hundred thousand dollars! Way over!

Of course, the nature of her work is that no one sees all she does. No one ever stops me in the grocery store to say - - “Tell the bookkeeper thanks a lot – great job!” For the most part, keeping the books isn’t something most people think about at all. But we do. And we thought it was about time we acknowledged her gift to us. So we gave her a beautiful jewelry box with an engraved plaque that says “To Miss Pink with our deepest love and gratitude.” And we put a charm bracelet inside with a single charm with the Dietrich name on one side and her name on the other. We figure when we’re old and gray (yeah, like the gray part will ever happen…) and sitting in our rockers in the old folks home, (or whatever) she can look at these gifts and know that we understand what she did for us and know how grateful we are. Thank you, Barbara. We literally could not have done it without you.

Do come see these festival films. There’s not a bad one amongst ‘em. They’re really, really good! And we have Hollywoodland in the Murray for one week only. The story of the death of the fella who played Superman in the 1950’s. Dark and mysterious and good.

See you at the Dietrich!

Live at The Dietrich

Erica Rogler

This first week of the film festival has gone by so quickly. Luckily I will have next week to catch the remaining movies I want to see. And I think I will see “Little Miss Sunshine” again. Opening night was fantastic. Twigs and Epicurean Delight did such a great job on the hors d’oeuvres and desserts. And to our volunteers and gala goers who helped make that night so festive - thank you, we are truly appreciative. The festival runs through September 28th, so you still have time to check out some of the films.

In a few short weeks, Sybilla Lenz will be back with Feng Shui workshops. We had a great turn out for her introductory Feng Shui class last spring. Feng Shui is an ancient science that incorporates calculations and movement as well as design, for the sole purpose of helping people to be in balance and completely comfortable in their home and work environments. On Wednesday, October 4th at 7:00 pm, the Dietrich will host “An Introduction to Feng Shui” in which Sybilla will teach the basics of the ancient art and science of Feng Shui. Then on Wednesday, October 18th at 7:00 pm, Sybilla will teach “Advanced Feng Shui”. In this class, students will learn how to apply the elements for reinforcing Feng Shui basics as well as understanding the principles of ying/yang for encouraging great health. Sybilla is a professional speaker, author and Feng Shui practitioner. Admission is $20 per class. I am thinking about taking at least the intro class. If you have seen my desk at our office, you would know why!

We also have Bonnie Gale coming in October to teach a class on “Holiday Crafts”. In this class you will learn how to make beeswax candles by dipping method, wreaths, a large willow star, and several woven holiday tree ornaments. It will run for six weeks on Thursdays from 4:30 - 6:00 pm. Admission is $60 and all materials are provided. What I like about this class is that you not only learn how to make new things but what you make, you can use as gifts.

During those six weeks, Bonnie will also teach a “Willow Basketry” class on Thursdays from 7:00 - 8:30 pm. Students will learn how to make a Danish Fruit Basket and a Thanksgiving Bread basket. Both baskets will be ready in time for your holiday serving needs. Besides being a professional basket maker, Bonnie also makes living willow structures. Her work can be seen in “House and Garden” magazine as well as in Tunkhannock’s Riverside Park. In the park there is a “Wee Willow Dome” for children to play in that Bonnie and her basketry class made in 2004. Please call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 to register for any of these classes.

For kids and families in October, the Dietrich will host a “Tracks and Tracking Second Saturday”. Laura Anderson, Environmental Education Coordinator from the Wyoming County Conservation District, will bring in a display of furs and mounts and will help you learn how to track our furry friends in the forest. The events will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 14th. Admission is free. This event is perfect for nature and animal lovers!
