At The Dietrich

So the film festival winds down, the wondrous celebration of indie and foreign films draws to a close, and we’re back to Hollywood and its’ bag of tricks! Now, that wasn’t said sarcastically – honest. I love Hollywood films, too. Some of them are the finest in the world! And you always have to remember that at festival time we are seeing the best that particular country has to offer. We could export the best of Hollywood and we’d look pretty good, too.

But, I digress. (Well, that’s a shock, isn’t it?) So this week we are bringing in The Guardian starring Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher. I actually think The Guardian is going to be a good, standard Hollywood movie. First, it’s about a really excellent group of people – the Coast Guard folks. Remember when government on all levels failed during hurricane Katrina? Well, almost all levels. The Coast Guard behaved wonderfully! It was everything you would want from your government – caring, efficient, heroic. So this movie is about the training of the people who save countless lives at sea during storms, who patrol our waters day and night and who are exceptionally brave and efficient.

It’s true Hollywood stuff – you know, where the older (fireman, policeman, doctor, thief, fill-in-the-blank) takes the young (etc.etc.) under his wing and shows him the ropes often at great personal expense. Just so you understand that I’m not being sarcastic here, I LOVE those movies. They’re popcorn movies. They’re great special effects movies. They’re make-you-feel-good-because-someone-is actually-doing-something-right movies. So you can come to see this one, bring the kids and settle in for a good old-fashioned movie about everyday heroes. Good idea, hmmm?

And for those whose taste runs to the more quirky – we are holding over Little Miss Sunshine for one more week. It has done so well that we wanted to give the folks who couldn’t fit it into their schedule during festival the chance to see it, and also, if you haven’t seen it, we want you to be able to come. It is soooo good! It’s off-the-wall hilarious. (It’s also R rated, not for kids.) It’s so funny and so endearing that I simply can’t say enough good things about it. Every once in awhile a movie like this comes along and audiences simply respond and make it a huge hit. This is one of those films. Small, funny, perfect.

Coming up, we are hoping to bring you Flags of Our Father, The Illusionist, and a few more little goodies and then we’re into November and the Christmas movies! Does that even seem possible?

As I write this I am looking out my dining room window at the magnificent white clouds scuttering by. The sumac has turned scarlet and the grape vines are starting to look weary. Autumn is such a wondrous time. The sky becomes emboldened by the cool air and the cloud patterns become intricate and substantive. The air takes on the chill of the coming winter with the occasional warmth of summer remembered. I can’t think of a more perfect season. Time to get to Jayne’s Orchards and get apples for sauce and for crisps and just for eating out of hand. Time to start looking at recipes to see if there might be a special one worthy of adding to Thanksgiving dinner. Time to get our sweaters out of their summer trunks. Time to say goodbye to the heat and a welcoming “hey” to the briskness that makes us celebrate Pennsylvania and its’ deciduous forests and windswept fields. Gosh – can you tell? I just love this time of year!

See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

Tomorrow is the last day of the film festival. It went by so fast! It is great to see so many people come out to see all of the foreign and independent films. We always feel a little disappointed to see the film festival go, but in October we have so many great classes to offer, we can’t really complain.

The Dietrich will be bringing back the popular “Jewelry for Kids” class with Sarah Sidorek. Last time, students age eight and up made earrings, necklaces and bracelets. This time students will design and make their own pendants for necklaces. This one-day workshop will be held on Wednesday, October 25th from 3:30 - 5:00 pm. Now I can attest that this is a fun project! Sarah, who also is the theater’s manager, tested out the class on some of our staff. (Oh, poor Sarah, I am sure we were quite a handful to teach! Some of us were full of mischief that evening.) The pendants are made from clay and can be designed and decorated to your liking. Admission is $10, which includes materials. If you ever run into Sarah at the theater, you will have to check out what jewelry she is wearing. Most of it she makes herself! She is quite artistic.

The Dietrich will also offer a Stenciling on Fabric course in October with our Sarah Sidorek. This is also a one-day course. Students will learn the techniques of stenciling on fabric while creating their own projects. Participants are asked to bring the fabric of their choice to stencil on. It could be a table runner, sweatshirt, etc. Students will go home with their own stencil. This class will be held on Monday, October 16th at 7:00 pm. Admission is $20. Adults and students age 16 and up are welcome. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 to register.

For young children, the Dietrich will host a singing and storytelling series “Fun for Tots” with Mary Baker in October and November. Mary delivers an energetic presentation that captures children’s imaginations. Through her stories and songs, children are introduced to funny characters that are engaged in life’s twists and turns. Little ones sing and dance along as they learn these new songs and stories. Mary has a BS in early childhood and elementary education and a MA in Storytelling. Mary has performed this series at the Dietrich for a few years now. According to Mary, “ Music and storytelling weave passion, joy and spirit and remind us of the magical quality of our existence and the infinite possibilities in each one of us.” Join us on Thursdays, October 12 through November 2 from 10:30 - 11:30 am for this free event. “Fun for Tots” is sponsored by the Tunkhannock Junior Women’s Club and the Wyoming County Cultural Center.

Also on Thursdays in October, the Dietrich will host a “Pottery and Sculpture for Kids” class from 4:00 - 5:30 pm. Students, ages nine to twelve, under the direction of Steve Colley, M.F.A. will learn the basics of making pottery through the use of potter’s wheels and hand building techniques (coil and slab construction), glazing, and sculpting. It is amazing to see what children can do with clay and how easy it is for them to learn how to use the potter’s wheels. Classes will be held on Thursdays, October 12 through November 2nd from 4:00 - 5:30 pm. Admission is $35, all materials provided.

And don’t forget the Dietrich is offering basketry, square dancing, Feng Shui and animal tracking workshops in October. What a month!
