At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

Oh boy! I can’t believe this. We’re running the trailers for Flicka and they look superb. It had been booked for weeks. And then in the early afternoon, after Mike had finished the ads and we were, we thought, on to other things, the call came in. The distributor had decided to pull Flicka from smaller theaters. They weren’t going wide after all. And that was that.

What a business. My father always taught his daughters that your word was your bond and that there were only two things in this life that really mattered – your loved ones and your word. Your reputation was yours to make or break, he’d say, so if you promise something you better do it. You were accountable both for what you did and what you didn’t do. I believe all that to be true, so it’s very discouraging sometimes to deal with people who have no honor, for whom a deal is only a deal if it serves their purposes, and whose word means nothing. I’d like to tell these young fellas to watch a couple of Jimmy Stewart movies to get an idea of how the world used to work and still should. But then I wonder if they’ve ever seen a Jimmy Stewart movie and if it moved them or made them snicker. I suspect the latter.

Which is a very roundabout way of telling you that we will not be opening Flicka but will have Open Season in its’ stead. Open Season is for kids, it’s very funny and it’s got terrific animation. It was quite popular when it came out about a month ago, but at the time we didn’t have space for it. If you bring the kids I’m sure they’ll have a great time, And it’s always fun to hear a theater full of little ones laugh. (And you have to admit that it’s a vaguely amusing premise that the hunted become the hunters.)

Another week of Man of the Year. I hope to see it this week, but the folks who have seen it raved about it, and the theater rocks with laughter. About now I can’t think of a single politician I wouldn’t trade in for a stand-up comic. At least then we’d know we’re supposed to laugh at them!

Okay – don’t forget that the first weekend in November is our first annual Festival of Fine Arts and Crafts. This is a real gem, folks. Some of the finest artisans in the area and from the great world beyond will bring their fares for your delight. I think of it as sort of a medieval bazaar, where the craftsmen brought their wares to be perused, bought and treasured forever. These juried artists are the real deal – potters and watercolorists and beeswax candlemakers and a metalsmith, knitted goods and sparkling ciders. All from the best of the best.

The preview night is Friday, November 3 and there will be wine and goodies to eat and all those wonderful things to see and buy for gifts. Remember when you buy a gift from an artist, it gives twice. First there is the joy of giving something unique to someone you love, and second there is the knowledge that you are helping to support a local artist. How wonderful, really. How often do we regular people get to be “patrons of the arts?” Call 996-1500 for reservations and information.

Okay, so I bet you’re wondering what in the world we’re doing with the old AM/PM building. Oh, go on. You can admit it. We know you’re curious! Well, it’s going to be torn down, but probably not until March, because that’s when all the bids on the demolition will be in and all the paperwork completed. So, we needed to dress it up for the upcoming Christmas season. We decided that painting it white would enable us to put a big red bow on it and greenery and just make it pretty in general. So Nick Aiello and his son Nicky painted it white for us the other day. (Thanks guys, a really, really big bunch.) It will go so well with the huge Christmas tree we intend to bring to the lot. Oh yeah. Ran out of space. I’ll fill you in next week.

See you at the Dietrich!

I can’t believe it is already the middle of October! This fall is going by so quickly. We have so much going on at the Dietrich. Our square dancing classes with local caller Roger Furman are great. We have a full class. We learned how to promenade, dosey do, and other steps. It is also quite a work out!

Fourth through sixth graders are really enjoying our Everhart Experiments at the Dietrich. Last week the class learned how to marble paper with shaving crème. And tonight we will have an Advanced Feng Shui class with Sybilla Lenz. And we have more events to come this fall.

Next Wednesday, local historian Dr. Sheldon Spear will give a presentation on “Northeastern Pennsylvania in American History”. In this presentation, Dr. Spear will share with us the significant role of our region throughout our nation’s rich history. Dr. Spear was a professor at Luzerne County Community College from its inception in 1967 to his retirement in 2001. He also penned four books on local history. Join us on October 25th at 7:00 pm for this interesting talk. Admission is $5.00.

We also will have a special class for children on October 25th. Instructor Sarah Sidorek will teach “Jewelry for Kids” from 3:30 - 5:00 pm. In this class, students will design and create their own clay pendant. It’s a fun class. Including materials, admission is $10. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 to register.

Sarah Sidorek will also be teaching a few Painting on Glass classes at the Dietrich in November for adults. She will teach students how to decoratively paint glass ornaments (Nov. 8 at 7 pm.) and hurricane globes (Nov. 15 at 7 pm). No painting experience is required. Not only will you learn painting techniques, but you will also have decorations and/or gifts ready for the holiday season.

In November, we will also start up a new class “Drawing and Painting for Kids” with Steve Colley. On Thursday from 4:00 - 5:30 pm starting November 9th, students will be able to learn the basics of perspective, line, form, color, and value as they draw and paint from life. This class is geared for children between the ages of nine and twelve and all levels of experience are welcome. We are having a great turn out for Steve’s Pottery for Kids class this month. Call the Dietrich for more information or to register at 570-996-1500.

Okay, now to the Festival of Fine Arts at the Banquet Hall of Triton Hose Company. It is coming up right around the corner and should be a great weekend of art. We will start things off with a Preview Night on November 3rd from 5:30 - 9:00 pm where patrons will be able to have an advance opportunity to view and buy one-of-a-kind art pieces as well have some hors d’oeuvres and refreshments with friends. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the theater or over the phone. The Festival will continue on Saturday, November 4th from 10 am to 5 pm. Admission is $2, and children under 12 are admitted for free. Artists featured include Karen and Bennett Garvin of College Park, Maryland. Both are fine photographers whose areas of interest include nature, florals, landscape, architecture, and color infrared images. They are eager to visit our area for the first time, and they plan to arrive early to do some special photography of scenic sites in our area.

Another artist in the festival is Donna Shaffer of Bloomsburg. This sculptor works with various mediums to create interesting pieces sure to please art collectors and lovers of beauty alike.

Also come out to see the works of Laceyville watercolor artist Janice Henning. Her works have won numerous awards in the area as well as in the annual Rehoboth Art League in Delaware.
