At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

Okay. Where was I last week when I was so rudely interrupted? (Or maybe it was just that I ran out of space)? Oh, yeah. The old AM/PM building. So, it got painted white so we can decorate it for Christmas. We are going to encircle it with red ribbon and front it with a big red bow! Don’t you think that will be a vast improvement over the way it has looked for the past eight years or so? And the Christmas finery should go quite nicely with the great big Christmas tree we intend to put up on the lot, right there in the center of town.

Speaking of which, does anyone out there have a huge evergreen they would like to donate? It will be the first annual Christmas tree on the lot, and will be a wonderful addition to our Christmas finery. If you should have one and like to donate it, we’ll tell the entire world what you have done for the town and even give you a December slide on the Dietrich screen! We just think it’s about time that the town had its very own Christmas tree. Don’t you?

So our dear President-of-the-Board, Jodi Armstrong gave me a call the other day to say that she has received a $3,000.00 challenge grant for the land purchase! No kidding! So, if any of you were planning on helping us with a donation for the property, now is the time to help us to double that donation. And, it doesn’t have to be the full three thousand. We can put many donations together to reach our $3,000.00 goal. But that was too good an offer to pass up! So, please keep us in mind during the upcoming giving season. We’re over half-way there (in buying the land) but we still have mountains to climb, so to speak.

Halloween Saturday we’re showing two really scary movies. The reason we’re showing it on Saturday is that Halloween actually falls on a weekday, and, obviously, that won’t do. We chose Saturday night because the Saturday night before Halloween is a time some kids might find themselves with too much time on their hands and too much mischief up their sleeves. So, where better for them to be then safely tucked inside the Dietrich, getting really, really scared? We’re doing a package deal on them – a buck off for the two movies, popcorn and soda (save your cup and bag and we’ll refill them for the second movie at no extra charge) and a safe place for the kiddies to be. The movies are both “R” rated for violence, but if it’s okay with you, (mom and dad) then it’s okay with us. Halloween is the one time we suspend the “R” restrictions! I’d give a holler and get your tix in advance just to be sure, although you never know with this sort of thing.

I bet you’d like to know what movies we’re showing this week. (Thought I’d never get there, didn’t you?) Same as this week. Open Season and Man of the Year. They both have done very well, so we’re in a holding pattern. I finally hope to get to see Man of the Year this Wednesday at matinee. Everyone who has seen it has told me they loved it. They tell me it’s funny, but a bit of a thriller, too. Not really your standard comedy. I can’t wait. As far as I’m concerned, Robin Williams is always a treat, albeit a wired one.

Then on November 3 the holiday movies begin. (Can you believe it? I mean, really!) The Santa Clause 3 begins in the Evans and Flushed Away in the Murray. Then we go to Happy Feet, The Nativity Story, Charlotte’s Web and Night at the Museum. Isn’t that just a terrific line-up?

And in January I promise I will bring in the great ones we’ve missed, like Flags of Our Fathers, The Queen and any others that look sooo good but we don’t have enough screens to show. (Another reason to help us get that land purchased - - the sooner the land is paid for the sooner those screens go up.)

You have a good week, now.

See you at the Dietrich!

Live at The Dietrich

Halloween is almost here which means great costumes and great movies! This year the Dietrich will host a Special Halloween Spooktacular for one night only. On Saturday, October 28, the Dietrich will host a scary movie night. Starting at 7:00 we will show “The Descent” followed by “Snakes on a Plane”. “The Descent” is about a cave expedition that goes horribly wrong, as the explorers become horribly trapped and pursued by a strange breed of predators. And in “Snakes in a Plane”, on a flight over the Pacific Ocean, an assassin, bent on killing a passenger who’s a witness in protective custody lets loose a crate full of deadly snakes. And check out the deal we have for you! Admission is $15 for the two movies, a medium soda and medium popcorn. Tickets are available now at the Dietrich. For horror movie fans, this is the night for you! Now let’s talk about other events at the Dietrich because as a little three-year old I know told me before, “Erica, that is enough of a scare for now.”

For children, we will have a Halloween themed “Fun for Tots: Stories and Songs with Mary Baker” on Thursday, October 26 from 10:30 - 11:30 am. Mary will have you and your little one dancing and singing along to Halloween songs and stories. Admission is free.

Tonight, local historian Sheldon Spear will be at the Dietrich for his presentation about the significance of Northeastern Pennsylvania in American History. It should be interesting to learn what role our region played throughout history - in the Revolutionary age and the Industrial Revolution. The presentation will be in the Dietrich’s Peg Fassett Performance Studio and admission is $5.

Another history event that is coming up will be the presentation “A War in Letters” with Mary Beth Voda. On Saturday, November 11th at 11:00 am, commemorate Veteran’s Day with a look at World War II through the correspondence of a U.S. Marine and a Japanese general. A reception honoring veterans will follow the presentation. This is a great event for all generations. Admission will be free. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 for details.

Next week we will already be into November and we will kick off the Festival of Fine Arts and Crafts on November 3rd and 4th. Our preview night on Friday, November 3rd from 5:30 - 9:00 will be a delight! The art will be exquisite and I can tell you, the hors d’oeuvres sound amazing. If you have ever been to a Film Festival Opening Night, you know that we always have a lavish spread. Tickets for Opening Night are $10 and can be reserved by calling 570-996-1500 or purchased that night at the Festival which will be held at the Banquet Hall of Triton Hose Company at 108 W. Tioga Street.

The festival will continue on Saturday, November 4th with additional marketplace hours
from 10 am - 5 pm. Saturday admission is $2, children under twelve, free. Clarks Summit artist Teresa Velardi’s Earth N’ Angels’ Pottery will be available at the Festival. And Linda Gross, the Fudge Lady from Greentown, PA will bring her many unique and delicious flavors of homemade gourmet fudge to the show. I can’t wait to try some of her specialty items such as pistachio and crème sickle fudge as well as some of the standard favorites. Raisa and Joseph Statuto of Clarks Summit will also be at the festival and have trill patrons and may area shows with their stunning arrangements of dried and silk floral pieces for home décor, mantle decoration and door displays. With these and other outstanding artisans, this is bound to be a great weekend of fine arts and crafts!

On a final note, we would like to thank the Laura Anderson and the Wyoming County Conservation District for the great animal tracks presentation she presented at the Dietrich a couple of weeks ago.
