Boy oh boy. How many times have I told you what a crazy business this is? Well, it continues to be so. I had no hopes whatsoever for this past weekend. We were playing one second-run movie and one movie that had been with us for three weeks. (Three weeks usually leaves a film on life support here.) So I was upstairs doing bookwork on Friday night when the supervisor called me and said – “Feel like making some popcorn?” I thought he was kidding at first, since I usually make popcorn only when we have large crowds. But I figured I’d humor him so downstairs I went.

To be greeted by a line going through the gallery and to the door. To the door! I couldn’t believe it! It was unreal. The Murray had an excellent crowd and we had well over one hundred people in the Evans. And everyone was in such good humor. Maybe it was the spring-like weather. Or just the fact that the stress from the holidays was over (Whew!) and we could all get back to our regular lives. But whatever the reason, it was a wonderfully crowded and jolly night. And the whole scene repeated itself on Saturday night. So much for being able to predict what’s going to happen at a movie theater.

So this weekend we have the last hurrah for Night At The Museum. It’s performed so well for us I almost hate to see it go. If you haven’t seen it yet, this is your last chance. It’s so light and funny and wonderfully silly. Perfect for a little escape with the kids. Great stars in it – Ben Stiller (and his Mom, Ann Meara has a role, too), Robin Williams, Owen Wilson, Mickey Rooney and Dick VanDyke. Now any movie with a cast like that just has to be fun. And it is.

On the Evans screen we have The Pursuit of Happyness starring Will smith. This is a deeply moving story about a man who wants desperately to succeed in the world and so he takes a job at a stock brokerage firm. What he doesn’t understand when he applies is that there is no pay – it’s an internship. And he has a pre-school son to take care of as well as himself. It’s a story of real grit, of courage above and beyond and of someone who is so determined to have his dreams come true that you know he simply can’t fail. Will Smith is both charming and deeply moving as the man who, against all odds, will not give up. (And best part? It’s a true story.)

Then next week we open The Queen as part of its Academy Awards run. It has been nominated for five Golden Globes and will no doubt be nominated for an equal amount of awards from the academy. Helen Mirren is brilliant. But above and beyond individual performances, there is the astonishing comparison between our government and the British. It leaves you thinking that our forefathers would be turning over in their graves!

I’m going to try very hard to bring in some of the other films we missed. High on my list is Flicka and Flags of Our Fathers. I think by the end of this month or the beginning of February I should have them both for you.

Culturally speaking, if you have some budding young writers, don’t forget that we now have a group starting just for them after school on Thursdays. They’ll learn not only how to write more effectively, but how to read more critically. (Being able to separate good writing from not-so-hot) is an important part of being able to write well.)

And for those who would like to learn about water colors from a master, do take note that Jan Henning is teaching a sort of water color boot camp this month. I’m tempted to take it myself, but it wouldn’t be fair to her (I am so totally not artistic.) She does beautiful, beautiful work, so come learn from someone with much to teach. Call 996-1500 to make your reservations.

See you at the Dietrich.

As promised, let me tell you about this great bus trip the Dietrich has planned to see the King Tut exhibit. It has been almost thirty years since the golden artifacts of the boy-king last left their home in Egypt. In the 1970’s, the unprecedented King Tut exhibit fascinated millions of visitors with the marvelous treasures of King Tut’s tomb, setting attendance records worldwide. On Wednesday, March 28th, we will take a bus at 8 am from the Dietrich to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia to see the exhibit for the day. The trip is $75 per person, which includes exhibit admission and the bus. Seats are limited and going fast (We are more than half full!), call the Dietrich at 996-1500 for reservations.

Tomorrow is our first day of ongoing visual art classes for children at the Dietrich in 2007. It is always exciting for us to see students back creating art. In All About Drawing, instructor Steve Colley will teach students ages 9 to 12 basic drawing techniques from line, shape, texture, value, color and space while creating their own masterpieces. On Friday, Amy Colley will start teaching Mixed Media for five to eight year olds. In this class series, students will explore the arts using a variety of materials including clay, tempera, charcoal, pastels and more. It is a fantastic class and great way for kids to end their school week.

Our Young Writers’ Group will also start up this Thursday from 4:00 - 5:30 pm under the direction of Ann Vitale. Aspiring authors between the ages of 11 and 16 are invited to come and learn about all forms of writing. Group members are invited to bring their own writings to share. Topics of discussion will be up to the group. Admission is free. For more information about this writing experience call 996-1500.

And join us for our first magic show this Saturday, January 13 at 11 am. Magician Jeremy Biesescker will dazzle us with an array of tricks including a live dove act. Volunteers from the audience will be chosen to take part in the show. Admission is free. This show will be geared for families with children age four and up.
For adults, we have a special Watercolor for Beginners workshop series coming up this winter with Jan Henning. The first workshop will focus on supplies and techniques and will be held during the evening on Friday, January 19th and in the day on Saturday, January 20th. The second workshop centering on color and composition will take place on Friday, March 30th and Saturday, March 31.
Watercolor artist, Jan Henning, is a retired elementary school art teacher with over 32 years of service teaching children. (She was my elementary school art teacher and I remember that I always looked forward to her class and we made these great masks in fourth grade.) Since 1997 she has provided art instruction for adults in both evening courses and workshops. She also works in pastels. Jan holds a BS in Art Education SUNY New Paltz. Her post-graduate work was done at Marywood University, Scranton, PA, Kutztown University, Kutztown, PA, Penn State University, Worthington Campus, Scranton, PA, Wilkes University, Wilkes Barre, PA and NEIU #18, Kingston, PA. She also did an Architectural Residency for Teachers at Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater in Mill Run, PA. Call the theater at 996-1500 for more information about Jan’s watercolor classes.
And now is the time to get your free copy of Gone with the Wind for Wyoming County Reads. Books are still available at the Tunkhannock Public Library.
