At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

There is so much to tell you this week! I barely know where to begin. Okay. First - – isn’t it just the most glorious thing to hear the geese coming home? They woke me up this morning with their chatter and then all the way from South Auburn to Tunkhannock I saw the great, lilting V’s in the sky. I wanted to stop the car and get out and shout – “Welcome home, old friends, welcome home!” But, of course, I didn’t.

Next item on the agenda. This is about too much to even believe. We are opening the spring film festival with the film that opened the Berlin Festival – La Vie En Rose. It is showing in advance of its U.S. opening for one show only on opening night. (That’s right – in advance of it’s U.S. opening! Jeffrey is such a genius! But he has truly outdone himself this time!) This was made possible by special arrangement with the distributor, Picturehouse, and through the courtesy and support of President Bob Berney and head of distribution, Bill Thompson, to whom we are very, very grateful.

La Vie En Rose is the story of the superb Edith Piaf – for those of you younger than I am, you might not know who she is. She was “The Little Sparrow,” the tiny, diminutive woman with a voice so full of heartbreak and longing that she captivated the world in the 1940’s and 1950’s. She became the voice of France, and her albums still sell today. The role is played by Marion Cotillard, of whom the New York Times has written, “her feral portrait of Piaf…is the most astonishing immersion of one performer into the body and soul of another I’ve ever encountered.”

I don’t need to tell you, that if you don’t hurry reserving your tickets for opening night, you won’t get them. This is an incredible happening – the fact that the film is coming from Berlin to Tunkhannock and won’t get to NYC or LA for weeks. It boggles the brain! So call 996-1500 now. Jeffrey will be with us to introduce both films. You don’t want to miss a moment of this spectacular night for those who love great films and fine food.

Wednesday, March 21, we have the final discussion of Gone With The Wind – The Heroine’s Journey – led by our own and most dear, Phillip Mosley. He is so erudite and so interesting, you’ll want to come hear what he has to say not only about Scarlett, but about many of the great heroines whose journeys have captivated us all. Discussion will start at 7:00 in the Fassett studio attached to the Dietrich.

Finally, we are holding Wild Hogs another week – it’s been a real blockbuster for us. We thank John Travolta and the gang for giving us two such wonderful weeks. It’s a good time movie with fun stars and many laughs. As one lady said when she left the theater - -“I was so ready for a good laugh. Thanks, guys.”

In the Murray we will show Zodiac. As Newsweek said, “This movie holds you in its grip from start to finish.” This is the true story of the Zodiac killer who terrorized San Francisco in the 1970’s by randomly and viciously murdering people. It’s the story of dedicated cops who try to solve these murders, but whose private lives as well as their work lives are taken over by the Zodiac. A terrific mystery, beautifully acted. R rated, so only for grown-ups.

So, that’s my news for this week. Not bad, hmmm? And how exciting is it that a film is coming from Berlin, to Tunkhannock and then on to New York? Bet in your wildest dreams, you never thought that could happen. That’s the trouble with “wildest dreams.” They never can live up to reality.

See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

We had quite a turnout for our two free showings of “Gone with the Wind” last Wednesday. Over two hundred people came out to see this acclaimed movie. Dietrich Theater Program Director Margie Young loved seeing people’s reactions as they came in and saw our greeters, Millie and Rich Ryczak, who were dressed in Civil War era costumes. And to see Scarlett and Rhett on the big screen was amazing. One of our patron’s mentioned on the way out how much fun it was to watch “Gone with the Wind” in a theater because you could hear how people reacted to different parts of the movie. We would like to thank the Pennsylvania Humanities Council for sponsoring it.

Our Wyoming County Reads – “Gone with the Wind” series will continue tonight, March 14th, at 7 pm at the Dietrich as we learn about The Role of Music in Film. With the help of WVIA’s Erika Funke and Julia Peterson of Keystone College, we will examine the essential contribution that music provides to film and some of the important functions that music achieves in motion pictures. The presentation format will be interactive and will include examples from popular films. The music throughout “Gone with the Wind” is so powerful. Next Wednesday at 7 pm, join us at the Dietrich for the final book discussion with Dr. Philip Mosley on “The Heroine’s Journey in Literature and Movies”.

Our Beginning Conversational Spanish class under the instruction of Victoria Romero has started and is terrific! The first week we learned and practiced different greetings. We also learned the Spanish alphabet and played hangman to practice pronouncing the letters correctly. We are a class of twenty. It is nice to see individuals and families come out to learn a new language together.

On Sunday, March 25th at noon, we invite you to enjoy an afternoon of live radio plays at the Steamtown National Historic Site. The Dietrich Theater Radio Players will be back for an encore performance of “The Mystery of the Steamtown Ghost”. Also playing on the same bill will be the radio play version of the hilarious “Arsenic and Old Lace” plus the ever popular Bud Abbott and Lou Costello skit “Who’s on First”. Admission is included in the park entrance fee. So come out and make a day of it at Steamtown!

Starting in April, the Dietrich will host a new class Ballroom Dancing for Beginners with Connie Kintner. This is a perfect opportunity to learn how to waltz and fox trot in 5 weeks.
