So this is it! Oh…my…gosh! This is the first week of festival, gala night, wine, good food, incredible desserts, terrific company, Jeffrey, the movies….how fine is that??? Of course, each festival I think is the best one, but this time I think it really, really is! After all, we’re opening the gala with a film that hasn’t even opened in New York City. Little Tunkhannock? Even littler Dietrich Theater? And we’re opening this spectacular movie about the incredible Edith Piaf and then a superb film about post-war Germany and…well… honestly. It really is the best festival yet. Don’t you think?

There are a couple other festival events I want to bring to your attention. First, our Jeffrey will be in the Evans theater on Saturday morning, April 14, at 10:30 to talk about …well…anything you’d like. Whatever pertains to the movie biz in any way. You can ask him about distribution, film-making, film buying, actors, directors, etc. etc. etc.. Won’t cost you a dime. So come to the theater Saturday morning and say “hey” to Jeffrey and you’ll hear some fascinating talk – I promise.

Then on Sunday, after the showing of Venus, our dear Phillip Mosley will be holding a discussion. Venus is a tough film and one that cries out for discussion after. It deals with many themes that we tend to be uncomfortable with, so why not join Phillip and talk about what you saw in the movie and what you liked and what you didn’t like. With Phillip running the discussion, I promise you it will be very, very interesting.

And don’t forget, that gala night is only the beginning. After that we have fifteen of the finest films released in the past six months. They are thought-provoking, suspenseful, beautiful, sad, witty and eye-opening. See as many as you can – you’ll be so glad you did.

Now to the gallery. In all the years we’ve been doing gallery displays (and I use that “we” term very, very loosely since I do nothing cultural – that’s all Margie and Erica) I don’t think we’ve ever done one more beautiful or classier than the one we have now. The display is so beautiful and so interesting that I can’t even begin to properly describe it. This is the collaboration of two women – Susi Nuss and Jessie Reppy Keker, both of Tunkhannock, who have put together one of the most beautiful basketry collections I’ve ever seen.

Jessie and Susi met at the Dietrich Willow Basketry class last fall and soon realized that they each had extensive basketry collections – Susi because she makes them and Jessie because she lived in Asia for over four years and collected native basketry. Her collection includes a woven shovel, a fish trap, a fishing creel and a six foot long shoulder carrier with double baskets. Susi Nuss bases her baskets on solid 19th century traditions. She mainly uses hand pounded black ash and makes each piece lovingly by hand. You will see how talented she is when you look at her work in the display cases.

(By the way, she’s teaching an intensive intro to basketry class on May 4 and 5 at the Dietrich. Call 996-1500 for information.)

Do come see the basketry collection – I think you will be as fascinated as I am each time I wander through the gallery.

It will be good to see you all during festival. I so look forward to saying “hey.”

See you at the Dietrich.

Only a few more days until film festival! Opening night has sold out and we look forward to celebrating great movies, food, and company! What will make the evening even more special is that April 13th will be the sixth anniversary (to the day) of the Dietrich Theater’s reopening. We have come so far in those six years. The Dietrich shows blockbusters year round and has spring and fall film festivals for those who love independent, art and foreign films. The theater continues to grow by providing more and more cultural events and classes to our community. Margie Young, Dietrich Theater Program Director, began programming at the Dietrich in the spring of 2002. The theater started off with a few classes from the Everhart Museum (We still love to have the Everhart Museum educators come up for classes!) and Travelin’ Showtime, a five part series focused on music and theater. From those beginnings, programming has grown and flourished.

Now the Dietrich is brimming with activity! If you walk by the theater on almost any day of the week you will notice classes or events happening in the Dietrich’s Dorothy G. Sheldon Art Studio and the Peg Fassett Performance Studio. For instance this Saturday, April 14, we will host a Q & A about the movie business with Jeffrey Jacobs (the film buyer for the Dietrich Theater), which is free and open to the public at 10:30 am in the Evans Theater. On the same morning, Steve Colley will be teaching an art class in the Dorothy G. Sheldon Art Studio. And then in the Peg Fassett Performance Studio at 11 am, we have square dancing for families. Families with children ages 6 and up are invited to come out and learn how to square dance with local square dancing caller Roger Furman. Admission is free. And on that Saturday evening, we will start our Ballroom Dancing for Beginner class with Connie Kintner!

Looking to the summer, our camps for kids look so fascinating! This will be the first time we will host three theater and visual arts camps. Michaela Moore of All About Theatre and Amy Colley, our artist-in-residence, do such a great job of teaching children about a subject through the use of theatre and visual arts. In June, we will start our camps off with a week of “Dinosaurs! Dinosaurs! Dinosaurs!” (June 18 - 22 from 10 am -noon). Campers ages five through twelve will have a blast discovering these fascinating ancient reptiles. Students will make costumes and their own dinosaur adventures and create art that is all about prehistoric creatures while learning about fossils, extinct mammals and other fantastic facts.

Then in July, we will go “Under the Sea” (July 9 - 13 from 10 am - noon) for an adventure with mermaids, sharks and underwater adventure! Children ages five through twelve are invited to learn all about the ocean in this salt water camp. Participants will create costumes, pottery, watercolors, stories and plays for a week of splashy fun!

And finally, in August we will take to the high sea for “Ahoy Matey! Pirates and Treasure” (August 6 -10 from 10 am - noon). Young ones (ages 5 -12) are invited to come find hidden treasure, learn the ancient secrets of pirates, go on treasure hunts, make pirate costumes and a play about - pirates!

All of these camps sound like great fun (they make me wish I was a child again)! To find out more about these camps or to register call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500.

We hope you come out and join us for the festival - fourteen days of sixteen films! To check out the festival schedule and film summaries, visit www.dietrichtheater.com .

You will have to check out our Earnshaw Gallery as you come in to the theater, we have an exhibit of “The World of Basketry”. It is an exquisite display of the works and collection of Susi Nuss, basketmaker, and the collection of Jessie Reppy Keker. I never knew there were so many functions and forms of basketry.
