A Little Ceremony
At last! The long gas station nightmare (or whatever) is about to come to an end! On Friday May 18 at 5:00 p.m. to 6:00p.m. there will be a "bringing down the building" gathering for anyone interested. We will have a few speakers, free popcorn and soda and a free prize drawing.
Prizes:
Third place: 10 movie tickets.
Second Place: Three month pass (for two) to the Dietrich.

At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

Oh my goodness! I have so many things to tell you this week that I know there won’t possibly be room. So, for once, I will try very hard not to ramble and get right to it.

First, have you noticed all the work being done on the marquee? It’s so exciting! First the insides got fixed so it actually will not leak that icky stuff whenever it rains. Then we’re adding two lines (they’ll be narrower, but still easy to read) and finally we’re running some ruby red neon along the bottom and (I think) the sides. It’s going to (at last) be as beautiful as the building is. We were very lucky to get a matching grant from the Heritage Regions and Senator Lemmond’s office. Bless them. (I know the Senator is retired now, but this grant came in under his watch.) It should be done by week’s end…maybe…if all goes as planned.

The next thing I have to tell you about is the “We’re tearing down the building on the lot” party we’re having on Friday at 5:00 to 6:00 on…well…the lot next door. We can’t really tear it down then because Mr. Padula can’t do it that day, but he’s going to pound a hole in the building which will be symbolically terrific (and it will be entirely gone then within the week). So, to celebrate the (finally!) going building, we are going to have a no charge raffle (hey, is that the best kind or what????) and the first prize will be (we hope) being able to help Mr. Padula punch a hole in the building with his bulldozer. (Or not, depending on about a million things.) But whether that happens or not, the first prize will include a six month pass for two to the movies. Second prize is a three month pass for the movies (which covers most of the summer) and the third prize is ten movie tix. (But to avoid confusion you have to hang around for the drawing.) Plus we’re having free popcorn and soda and a couple of speakers and are going to announce the start of the public segment of our capital campaign! To expand the theater! Is that just too cool or what????

And just think, if we are able to build on that lot in the future (I hopeIhopeIhope) we will be able to secure the Dietrich’s place here for…well…forever. And we’ll be able to find more space for our overflowing classes and give people a new movie every weekend and just be even better than the Dietrich is now and, bless, her heart, she’s a pretty good old girl as she stands. But…there’s always room for improvement, even with the best old girls in the world!

So, come and join us. Have some of the best popcorn on earth, have a cold drink and celebrate a momentous day with us. You know, we couldn’t do any of this without you, so please, please, please come keep us company as we launch into a new and challenging phase of the Dietrich story!

Oh, yeah. We’re opening Shrek the Third Friday. The trailers are hilarious! What fun it is to hear the little ones laugh at the Shrek movies. And this one looks to carry on all the silliness that is Shrek. One word of warning – it’s probably best to get your tix in advance, if you can. If not, come early. We will be running five shows a day over the weekend, but (hopefully) this will be a blockbuster, so you need to take that into consideration. Then next Thursday night, at 12:01 (which is really Friday morning, or whatever) we begin Pirates of the Caribbean. If you want to see that midnight show, call for your tix now! Historically that show sells out, so come in for your tix or call as soon as possible!

I think opening two huge blockbusters and a capital campaign is all the excitement I can stand. Whoa! Join us. Keep us clam. And focused. (Good luck.)

Hope to see you all this weekend. At the Dietrich. Of course.

Live at The Dietrich

Shrek is back! Join us for the opening of “Shrek the Third” this Friday. I find myself enjoying Shrek movies because the characters' voices are played by some of my favorite stars -Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, Antonio Bandaras, Julie Andrews and John Cleese. When we show Shrek and other children’s movies, it is wonderful to see families enjoying time together. And to hear a theater full of laughter is simply delightful. Sometimes I find myself paying closer attention to the audience’s reaction than the movie itself. I love the experience of seeing movies in a theater, even if you don’t know anyone else in the audience, you have something in common with them for those two hours of film viewing.

You should see the work of our Quilting for Kids students -it's amazing. Through this class students have learned about value by creating subtle or dramatic effects in their quilts. Plus, these students' sewing skills are amazing. One of the instructors laughed as she told me how one young quilter who joined last week asked if it would be okay if she stayed to finish her seam even though the class was over. During the summer months, children ages 6 and up will have the opportunity to create “Secret Garden Quilts”. They will be able to design their quilts with colorful fabrics and embellish them with flower and bug beads and buttons. Classes are held on Wednesdays from 3:30 - 5:00 pm. Admission is $6 per class and materials are provided.

We also had a new student in our Intergenerational Quilting class last week. What makes this class so interesting is that students bring along projects that they have already started or old family quilts for show and tell. One student brought in old quilts and was shown several ways to repair them. Over the summer, students of all ages will learn how to make a table runner or throw for an indoor/outdoor setting made with fruit and vegetable print fabrics, homespuns and more. This could be a fun summer project for families and friends. Intergeneration Quilting is held on Wednesdays from 6:00 - 7:30 pm.

On June 12 from 3:30 - 5:00 pm, Sarah Sidorek will be back for another Decorative Painting for Kids class. Students ages eight and up are invited to learn painting techniques as they create a decorative boxes for a Father’s Day gift and wrapping paper to wrap it in. Admission is $5.00. Now is the time to sign up for this class as well as other summer camps, classes and events, call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500.

And congratulations to Margie Young, Dietrich Theater Program Director, for being named Tunkhannock’s ‘Woman of the Year’ by the Business and Professional Women’s Organization of Tunkhannock! She has done a tremendous job developing and growing classes, exhibits, and events at the Dietrich for our community.
