At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

As I write this in the chaos that is my office, on this Monday afternoon, it’s actually raining. The sort of lazy, steady, chilly rain we have desperately needed lo these many months. It’s so wonderful. I love the segueing days of August. There are still dog days of summer to be borne, but there are also the hints of autumn to come. The best time of year. When the days are perfect and the nights are quilt cold. When the apples and grapes ripen and the birds gather like year-round golfers to head south for the winter.

We are playing catch-up at the movies these next two weeks. All grown-up movies(I can here my friend Sam Hockman saying it’s about time) and pretty good ones at that – varied and interesting.

So this Friday we open the Americanized version of Mostly Martha, the wondrous German film about a chef whose life is orderly and successful and then falls completely apart as she must take care of her niece. Her journey from controlled world to a meaningful life is funny and poignant. Although No Reservations didn’t garner the rave reviews Mostly Martha did, it still is worth your time if you like a lovely, light romance. The gorgeous Catherine Zeta-Jones has the lead role and her niece is played by the completely fabulous Abigail Breslin -- the star of Little Miss Sunshine. (She alone is worth the price of admission.

The second film is Transformers. Okay, so they’re not entirely grown-up films, but I have to say that it looks to be a hoot. Julie White is in it and she just won the Tony for her role in Douglas Carter-Beane’s The Little Dog Laughed. Whatever she’s in, she’s worth a look-see. That’s one funny lady!

Then the next week (August 30) we have Becoming Jane in the Evans. It’s a whimsical tale about the early life of Jane Austen – the lovely lady who wrote such wondrous novels that they are still read two hundred years after she wrote them – and are made into the most incredible movies. This movie although correct for the period and the sense of women’s roles back then, is not based on fact. However, it is a delightful film with much to say, and, if Ms. Austen were alive today, she would probably be delighted by it.

And in the Murray that weekend, we have Rescue Dawn starring Christian Bale as Dieter Dengler, captured and tortured in Vietnam. Eventually he makes a run for it and this is the thrilling and true story of that escape. For you Vietnam vets out there, this is one you won’t want to miss!

Now a heads-up for the cultural folks. On Sunday, August 26 at 7:00 at the Keystone in Towanda, and on Wednesday, August 29 at 7:00 at the Dietrich, the 2007 Digital Film Festival will be presented. In addition to presenting the winning films, other submitted films will be on the Festival DVD. After announcing the winners, the audience will vote for an audience choice winner who will receive one third of the $3.00 festival admission price.

So, as you can see, a lot is going on. We’re down to about 75 tix left for gala night. I’m telling you folks – you have to make those reservations now. Once the brochure goes out it’s all over that very day! It breaks my heart to tell people we have no room for them. So call 996-1500 now. How often do you get to see a movie that hasn’t opened yet? It’s probably not all that important in the great scheme of things, but it’s too, too cool! So make that call now.

And remember that pledging $1,000.00 over five years is less than $20.00 a month! We’re so close. So close. We could sure use a little help from our friends.

See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

Quite a talented group of musicians entertained us last Wednesday night for our Gathering of Singers and Songwriters 6. Lorne Clarke, Tom Flannery, and Kate and CJ provided a mix of equally great music and lyrics throughout the evening. For all of those folk music lovers out there, the Old Lynn Concerts will start their free concert series for the season next month at the old Lynn Methodist Church that has now been converted into a concert hall. The village of Lynn is located nine miles north of Tunkhannock on Route 29. For more information about the concert series, contact lores@epix.net.

The Dietrich also has a great line up of events for September. We will kick off our film festival in grand style with our Opening Night Gala on September 14th. The Dietrich will proudly feature “The Jane Austen Book Club”, which will not have opened in the U.S. yet, and “Paris, je t’aime”. Of course, we will start off the evening with wine and great hors d’oeuvres from local restaurants, and Epicurean Delight always provides a delicious array of desserts for in between films. Tickets are $40 and can be reserved by calling 570-996-1500. The other fourteen festival movies are: “Away from Her”, “Black Book”, “Golden Door”, “Into Great Silence”, “Lady Chatterley”, “My Best Friend”, “The Namesake”, “Once”, “Sicko”, “A Sidewalk Astronomer”, “Ten Canoes”, “The Valet”, “La Vie en Rose”, and “You Kill Me”. For movie summaries and show times, visit www.dietrichtheater.com.

For children, we will start out September with a lively event for little ones and families on Saturday, September 8th called “Songs and Games for Tots”. At 11 am, join us as Bill Frye and his supercharged guitar celebrate in the song the changing seasons and the variety of sights and activities it brings. Children and families will have the opportunity to sing and dance along to popular songs. Admission is free.

For that same ages group, the Dietrich will begin its Mommy and Me and Preschool Art Series with Dino Art. Taught by our artist-in-residence, Amy Colley, little ones will learn all about dinosaurs as they create their own dinosaurs out of clay, make dinosaur prints and fossils, and draw and paint their favorite prehistoric creatures. Dino Art for Preschoolers (ages 4 & 5) starts on Thursday, September 13th from noon - 12: 45 pm and the first day of Dino Art from Mommy & Me will begin the following day Friday, September 14th. For more information or to sign up for these classes, call the Dietrich at 996-1500.

For young actors, the Dietrich will bring back Michaela Moore for the Make Believe Players. In this workshop, children between the ages of 6 -11 will experience a fun and creative introduction to all that acting is. Skills and activities covered include acting techniques, theater games, improvisation, storytelling, play making, character creation and more. A casual performance will end the workshop. Make Believe Players will be held on Tuesday, September 11 - October 16 from 4:00 - 5:30 with their performance on Saturday, October 20th at 11 am.

And don’t forget to join us next Wednesday night August 29 at 7 pm, as the Endless Mountains Digital Film Festival will return to the Dietrich. View films created by local digital filmmakers and vote on your favorite film. Admission is $3.
