At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

Oh, my. The old broads at the Dietrich are in a tizzy. It’s closing in on festival and there is much to be done…much to be done. Shirley has to finish up ordering the slides for all our new sponsors. (Do remember to take note of the folks whose names are listed in the brochure and on the screen because their sponsorship enables us to provide all that gorgeous food and good wine for opening night.) Margie and Erica see to every little detail for opening night. Sarah makes sure the building is in tip-top shape. And Esther does posters and deals with film companies and …well…all the things that Esther does. Mike has finished the graphics for the screen and the printed page and all that’s left is my job.

To worry.

Yup. That’s it. That’s my job. I am the designated worrier. Will the gala night sell out? (Always has, but still…this could be the time it doesn’t…) Will the food be all right? (With Twigs and Epicurean and Seasons providing the food???? Have I lost my mind????) And, the top thing I worry about (well, after will it sell out?) is will there be enough food? Because once we ran out of something. So that caused me to have a neurotic fear of ever running out of anything!

Oh, yeah. There’s that one more thing I can worry about in case I find the aforementioned too ridiculous. I can still worry about whether I picked the right films and whether people will like them. Oh, yeah. I can manage a lot of sleepless nights over that one. (Just in case you didn’t realize it up to this point, it’s hard to be neurotic. It’s one heck of a lot of work. This worry business isn’t easy, so I think I deserve a lot of credit for doing it year after year. Although, really, it isn’t that hard. It just comes naturally.)

So this coming week is our first ever Ladies Week Special at the Dietrich! We have two wonderful films for the gentler sex – Becoming Jane and Nanny Diaries. Becoming Jane is about the young adulthood of Jane Austen whose dead-on look at the silliness of society still works today. And Nanny Diaries is the tragic tale (at least I thought it was when I read the book) of the children of the very, very rich in New York City and the nannies who raise them. The children are caught in a horrible catch 22 where they must obey their nanny, and are taken care of completely by the nanny, but if they love the nanny she is immediately dismissed. I’m actually hoping that they change the ending of the movie and make it a bit more upbeat, because when I was done with the book I wanted to have Children and Youth take away all the children raised with so much money and so little love. (I just can’t stand to see children or critters mistreated. Makes me sick!)

Oh, yeah. The “special” part. I forgot that, didn’t I? Okay - - the special is that if a lady buys a small popcorn she gets her small soda (or water or Icee) free. And we throw in a few Dove chocolates to boot. So you get to see a good chick-flick with your gal-pals and you get a bargain on snacks and some Dove chocolate. Now, what other theater would make you feel that special?

Capital Campaign keeps chugging along and each day we get closer to making goal. But if you get those pledges in now and we can actually start construction in March, then it’s possible we could have those extra screens open by the holidays of next year. Wouldn’t that be simply phenomenal???? So think about those pledges. The expansion of the theater assures that in ten years it will still be here and be run by competent young people. The old broads brought you the theater and, with your help, made it a resounding success. Now it’s time to make sure that it can support itself and a younger staff on into the foreseeable future. (Want a shivery thought? Think about what the town would be like if the Dietrich were to go dark again? Now, that’s a scary thought, isn’t it?)

See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

Bill Frye will be back at the Dietrich this Saturday, September 8th at 11 am for Songs and Games for Tots. This fast-paced musical experience will kick off our fall series of classes and events. During this interactive performance, Bill and his supercharged guitar will celebrate in song the changing seasons and the variety of sights and activities it brings. This is a great activity for families with little ones– we hope to see you there! Admission is free.

Local square dancing caller, Roger Furman, will also be back at the Dietrich at the end of the month for Square Dancing for Families. On Friday nights, come out in your dancing shoes with your friends and family and learn how to square dance. Beginner and experienced square dancers are welcome. Classes start Fridays, September 28 – October 19 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. Admission is $2 per class.

The Dietrich is also offering some unique classes for adults this fall. On Wednesdays, September 26 – October 3 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm, the Dietrich will provide a Photography Workshop with Kenny Ganz. In this series, students will learn how to improve their photography skills by learning about camera operation, effects, use of lenses and accessories as well as composition. Students should bring film or digital cameras. No experience is required. Admission is $50. To register, call 570-996-1500.

Then on Friday, September 28th (7:00 – 9:00 pm) and 29th (9:30 am – 4:00 pm), local watercolor artist and retired elementary art teacher Jan Henning will be back to teach a watercolor workshop for beginner and intermediate students. In this class, participants will learn the basics of perspective drawing and will create a two-dimensional rendering of a three-dimensional object. Jan’s use of perspective is evident in so many of her landscape paintings. According to Jan Henning, "Representing nature in the form of landscapes is the driving force behind most of my artwork. I am trying to reproduce and re-interpret the great color and the majestic forms that were originally created by God. The 'awesomeness' of our surroundings is the catalyst for my work and I am striving to instill this in the eye of the viewer." If you would live to view some of her work, visit www.jansmountainart.com. Admission to the workshop is $60. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 to sign up.

Then on October 20th from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm, local basketry maker, Susi Nuss will teach a one-day basketry workshop. Students age 16 and up will learn how to create a round basket with a hexagonal weave throughout. Traditionally this type of basket was used to drain whey from curds when making cheese. Susi is definitely an authority on baskets. I just visited her website www.basketmaker.org and couldn’t believe how much information she has on baskets, basket making materials, etc! Call 570-996-1500 for class details.

Oh, and for kids, there is still time to sign up classes including Make Believe Players, All About Drawing and Printmaking, Dino Art for Preschoolers and more!

And our fall film festival is just around the corner (September 14 - 27)! For movie times and summaries, visit www.dietrichtheater.com.
