So, I have to tell you about the wonderful vendors we will have at the Fine Arts and Crafts Fair the first weekend in November. It’s really quite a line-up of artistic talent and fun stuff to buy. Perfect for holiday shopping. It’s at Triton, so it’s easy to get to and, honestly, it’s a good time.

But first, before I tell you about the great artists we will have displaying their wares, I have to tell you that as I write I am being attacked by a member of Kitty Al Qaeda. There is no doubt she’s been through terrorist training. She’s about five weeks old, mainly white with a striped cap on her head and a striped tail, and completely innocent looking blue eyes. Her name is Delilah because she’ll charm your socks off. She was dropped off at the house last week so I fed her (she was so happy to see a person she kept screaming the entire time she was eating which made for some strange sound effects) and put her in the laundry room and left for work, briefly pausing to tell my husband that there was a new baby locked away safe from the Jacks. Many unhappy words ensued, the jist being that we can’t have another cat. I said I knew that (we have ten, folks) and I fully intended to write about her in my column this week in the hopes of finding her a home.

Nine hours later, when I returned from work, I found my husband sitting in his chair reading and Delilah the seductress curled up in his neck, purring happily in her sleep. (Boy those Marines are a tough bunch. Heh heh.) A week later she simply wears out all the other cats who have been mighty tolerant of the blue-eyed terror. So, if anyone out there would like a darling, so pretty, funny kitten about six weeks old, do call me at 833-5246. The only catch is that I want her to be an indoor kitty. But she really, really needs a home.

Okay, here are a few of the artists – Lucilla Norella, Botanical Artist (she grows the flowers and herbs she arranges). Dorothy and Mark Gibson – honey everything. Soaps and skin care products, candles. Linda Gross – All kinds of fudge -- mmmmm a reason to come all by itself as far as I’m concerned. Dick Allyn, nature photography, Emilie Deery – sterling silver, crystals – one-of-a-kind designs. Teresa Velardi – unique pottery. Julie Loftus – mixed media artist. Matthew Haney – fine art in oil, acrylic, pencil. Pam and John Dehler, special hand-poured long-burning candles made of the finest oils. Wendy Seymour – special oils, sauces, gift baskets centered around home grown garlic (YUM!!!). Byrdy Snyder – unique dried floral arrangements. Tina Urban – primitive art, especially for the holidays. Rachel Steffan – mixed media. Harold Lock – wood cutting. John Kish – Wondrous ciders for the holidays. Karen Shores, alpacas. Wool and the critters themselves will be at the fair.

So, tell me that isn’t a fascinating group to come see. What a place to Christmas shop, hmmmmm?

So, we have the same two movies for one more week. The Game Plan is simply a wonderful movie. Bring the family and enjoy. We are carding for The Heartbreak Kid. No one under 17 will be admitted.

So we hope to have Elizabeth: The Golden Age for you soon as well as The Jane Austen Book Club and various other goodies. And that will bring us into The Bee Movie with Jerry Seinfeld voicing the lead bee.

Have a great week. Remember to get your tix soon for Trial By Jury.

See you at the Dietrich.

Last Wednesday’s presentation with Mike Stevens was pure fun. Mike Stevens obviously is a great storyteller and it was wonderful to learn more about his adventures on the Pennsylvania Road. He has met so many people with so many stories. We’d like to thank him for sharing that evening with us.

And next Wednesday night at 7 pm the Dietrich will host another talk. This time, it will focus on NEPA and the Civil War. Dr. Sheldon Spear will be back to share with us what was happening in Northeastern Pennsylvania during that time, such as unfair conscription laws, severe inflation, labor strife, and an increase in lawlessness. This will be a great treat for local history buffs out there. Dr. Spear is definitely a wealth of information regarding local history. Admission is free.

Last week the Dietrich also started up its Golden Days of Radio Players Group again. I can’t believe how it has grown. About thirteen radio players came out to start preparing for this fall’s radio production. Under the direction of Valeria Paulus, the group will learn the ins and outs of radio theatre while preparing to perform the 1942 play “Occupied Paris” from the Big Town series and the Christmas episode of the My Friend Irma series which aired on Christmas day in 1950. I love the sound effects the group uses in their performances. I can’t wait to see what Bob Kulow, their sound effect technician, comes up for these plays. Mark your calendars for their November 13th performance at 7 pm; I think we will be in for a real treat. Admission is free.

And just around the corner, master basketry maker Susi Nuss will be back for another workshop. On Saturday, October 20th from 9:00 – 4:00 pm, students will learn how to create a round basket with a hexagonal weave throughout. Susi is not only an expert about basketry but she is a great teacher. Admission is $80 and there are just a few spaces available.

If you find that you have more of an appreciation for fine arts and crafts instead of making them, then we have a just the event for you coming up during the beginning of November. Join us for our second annual Festival of Fine Arts and Crafts at the Triton Hose Banquet Hall in Tunkhannock featuring the works of eighteen fine artists and artisans. We will start the weekend off with a preview night on Friday, November 2nd from 5:00-9:00 pm where you can be the first to see and buy a wonderful selection of hand-crafted items and enjoy some wine and hors d’oeuvres with friends. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance by calling 570-996-1500. Then on Saturday, the festival will continue from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. Admission is $2. The artists’ works featured are wonderful - pottery by Theresa Velardi, Tuckaway Pillow Quilts by Patti and Adam Hozempa, metal work by Donald Shelton and more. Stay tuned for more information about the artists featured in event.

Oh, and reserve your tickets now for the Gilbert & Sullivan “Trial By Jury” performance by La Voce which will take place at the Wyoming County Courthouse on Sunday, October 28th at 3:00 pm. What a perfect setting for this comic opera! Tickets are $25 and space is limited. Call 570-996-1500 for reservations and more information.
