What a weekend coming up! I think I need to take a bottle or two of vitamins to give me some much-needed energy. Movies and cultural and a bit of this and a dab of that make for each day of the weekend being something fabulous. Okay – I won’t waste any time babbling (wow, that’s different!) and I’ll get right to it.

Tonight (Friday) Ernie Hudson will be with us to meet and greet and answer questions about making movies, about the particular films he’s been in and about life in La-La land in general. From everything I’ve heard, he’s a lovely, friendly and sweet man, so do come out and meet him and see Everything’s Jake. It’s a wonderful first movie by Chris Fetchko about a homeless man in NYC. Debbie Allen is in it as well and there is a poignant moment or two with Phyliss Diller. Do come out and meet the film maker and Mr. Hudson. You don’t get many chances to do something like that. From Saturday through Thursday Evrything’s Jake will play each day at 4:30 with mats Sat., Sun., and Wed..

Saturday night I have to take a run up to Montrose to the Butternut Gallery to see the writing of my dear friends Ann Vitale and Kaye Gilbert. The gallery is opening a photography exhibit and the photographs are enhanced by essays or poetry and Ann and Kaye had their work chosen to be hung next to two of the works of art. They both are such fabulous writers that I simply couldn’t miss their Butternut debut. Plus, I like the Butternut. It’s cheery and warm and friendly – not like some galleries that can be so grim in their pursuit of whatever is art-proper. The Butternut is cozy and …well…interesting. And they also have books for sale – a surefire way to keep me coming back.

Then on Sunday we have Gilbert and Sullivan’s Trial By Jury at the courthouse. Margie and Erica were at the dress rehearsal and said it is spectacular! And the pre-show show is every bit as good as the opera! It starts with the Drinking Song from the Student Prince, an operetta I have seen five times because I am totally enchanted by it. Anyway, it’s a wonderful afternoon’s entertainment. Do come out and support the expansion of the Dietrich theater by buying tickets to this wonderful afternoon of fine music and good fun.

Okay, at the movies we have Michael Clayton in the Murray with George Clooney. It’s a taut legal thriller that has received rave reviews as one of the most intelligent films of the year. So for all you people who’ve been pleading for a “grown-up” film, this is one of them.

From Saturday through Thursday we will have two Halloween films playing in the Evans. If you want to see them both it will cost $10.00. Only one is normal price. They’re as scary as I could bring here. R rated for creepy crawly stuff.

Capital Campaign is rolling along. It’s starting to get exciting around here. We hope to break ground in March so that the new theaters will be ready for next Thanksgiving. So now is the time to give if the future of the theater is something you want to give to. We need to secure our position by having four screens – it’s so simple really. The more films you can show the better you can do. So, if you want to see four screens lit up by next Thanksgiving, do give a thought to giving to the Dietrich Capital Campaign. It’s an investment in the future of the town and, really, the entire area.

So, there. I’ve done it. Told you everything I had to in the allotted space. Do you think they should give me an award for that? (heh heh.)

See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

Last week Margie Young, Dietrich Theater Program Director, and I had a great opportunity to learn about new grant procedures for the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts (PCA) in State College. The PCA funds about 370 arts organizations in the commonwealth and at these workshops it is always fun to meet people from different arts organizations and learn about what they do. After the workshop, we had a little time to enjoy the Penn State campus on that beautiful fall day and partake of some ice cream from the Creamery -delicious!

Looking to this weekend, we have two big events lined up for this weekend that we hope you can come out for. On Friday, October 26th, the Dietrich will premiere the movie Everything Jake starring Ernie Hudson at 7 pm. Written by Matthew Miele and Christopher Fetchko, a Hazleton native, this independent movie is about a homeless man who helps a newly homeless man learn how to survive. We are so honored that acclaimed actor Ernie Hudson will be at the Dietrich that evening to introduce the film. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by calling 570-996-1500.

Then on Sunday, October 28th at 3 pm you don’t want to miss Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Trial By Jury” at the Wyoming County Courthouse featuring La Voce. What a perfect setting for this comic opera! Before the show, there will be a concert of opera favorites called “The Deposition”. Tickets are $25 each and can be reserved by calling 570-996-1500. Proceeds benefit the Dietrich Theater Expansion Project.

The next weekend, the Dietrich will kick off its Festival of Fine Arts and Crafts with a Preview Night on Friday, November 2nd from 5:00 - 9:00 pm at the Triton Hose Banquet Hall in Tunkhannock. Be the first to see and buy a wonderful selection of handcrafted items by fine artists. Music will be provided by Alan Thatcher, and wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door. The festival will continue on Saturday the 3rd from 10 am - 4 pm. Children and families will also be able to meet and pet two of Endless Mountains Alpacas live alpacas on Saturday. Saturday tickets are $2. This is a great time to start holiday shopping for some unique gifts including hand-crafted jewelry, pottery, photography, quilts, paintings, candles, soaps and delicious food items.

And tonight and Wednesday, November 7th at 7:00 pm, our own Sarah Sidorek will teach decorative painting on glass classes. In tonight’s class, students ages 16 through adult will paint a vase and matching votive holders, and in the November class Sarah will teach techniques for painting glass ornaments. Admission is $15 per class and materials are provided.
