Have you heard them? The geese? Flying over day and night, chattering away to each other, giving encouragement, cheering each other on. Don’t you wonder if the younger geese are asking “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Huh? Huh? Huh?” And I wonder if the older, seasoned travelers look down and wonder if old Farmer Jones is still alive, since he was a little sickly when they left, or if the pond they so dearly loved is still there or if, like so many ponds of their baby-goose-ness (hmmmm) is drained now so McMansions can be built. I just wonder what the geese think when they fly over our lives, bringing such hope in the spring and a tinge of melancholy in the autumn. How wondrous it is to watch the great flocks pass in ghostly V’s between us and the moon – it seems such an ancient rite of passage. And maybe, if the geese are still on their migratory paths, the world isn’t quite so troubled as we sometimes think it is.

Okay. Holiday is on the way so we will be open on Friday and on Monday, ready to give you a moment’s respite from the stress of holiday doings. Although, in fairness, Easter isn’t as stressful as Christmas – we take a little bit more relaxed attitude toward all we have to do. And I do love the little Easter “extras.” When Jennie and I were kidlets, we always, always, got a new dress, a new hat, patent leather shoes and white gloves. Always. As sure as the geese flew over, my mother took us to the store for our Easter outfits. (The hat was my favorite and I still am sad that hats fell out of fashion because they were simply so much fun.) My father dyed the eggs – and I still can’t smell vinegar without snapping back to helping Pop swirl the eggs in all kinds of wonderful color patterns. (A housepainter doing eggs gives you a most colorful variety.) And, of course, there were always the chocolate bunnies – oh, my! Did anything ever taste as scrumptious as chocolate bunnies in homes where chocolate was a rare treat? And, of course, we were allowed only the tiniest bite of our chocolate so we wouldn’t “spoil our appetite” (something that rarely happens today – sigh) and would be able to eat Mamma’s Easter dinner. Ham. Always ham for Easter. Each holiday had its own meat – Turkey for Thanksgiving, Rib Roast for Christmas, Pork Roast for New Year – (it brought luck to the household although not to the poor pig) and a ham for Easter. I think, growing up, with my mother being the kind of decisive person she was, I think I may have thought that was the law and I would have been very surprised to hear that anyone had any other meats at their holiday tables. Oh, my. The memories. What is it about the holidays that brings them flooding back, even when we haven’t intended it?

So, I must now get to the business at hand. Drillbit Taylor is aimed at us all, really, but middle-school to younger high-school boys maybe even a bit more. Although it’s a comedy it takes on a serious subject – bullying. Bring the kids – it’s a hoot! And Horton is simply magnificent! No kidding! It’s one of the best films ever! Dr. Seuss would be so proud! Not only did they get the story right, but they completely nailed the funny, goofy, silliness that is Dr. Seuss! You’ll love it every bit as much as the kids – honest!

On the last Sunday in March we will be showing a film about Frances Slocum. It’s a wonderful film - - and the cast, and the producer (Bill Bachmann) will all be on hand to answer questions about it after you’ve seen it. Mark your calendar for March 30. I loved this little locally made production. If you’re a history buff, you will so enjoy this look at a unique moment in our local past.

Don’t forget the C.A.R.E.S drug forum at the Dietrich on March 27. We need to understand the impact drugs have not only on individual lives, but on our community – our country really. We need to find ways to help. Come to the forum and see what can be done, what is being done. Come to learn. Our children are dying and we need to help them. This is not somebody else’s problem. This is your problem. And mine. Please, please come.

Live at The Dietrich

We had a great turn out for An Evening with Mike Lewis. Local singer Erin Canedy opened the show by singing some popular favorites, and then Mike Lewis and friends took the stage and gave such a genuine performance. It was a wonderful evening with musicians who obviously love their craft. Mike was so personable and he shared such interesting stories about the inspiration for many of the songs in his set. We are so grateful to Mike Lewis and Carl Canedy for putting this show together. Community minded and talented -what a winning combination! All of the show’s proceeds benefit the Dietrich Theater.

You should have seen all of the beautiful jewelry that was made in our Jewelry Making -Glass Fusing class. Esther Harmatz taught students how to design and create fused glass jewelry. Barbara, Shirley, and Sarah from the Dietrich all took the class and came in wearing the jewelry they made in the class and raved about how much fun they had making it. They thought it was so neat to see how the glass changed as it was fused. It definitely must be a great time, because Esther’s May glass fusing class is already full! If you are interested in beading or jewelry making, there is still a few spaces available in our Easy Beading class with Esther coming up on March 24 from 6:00 - 9:00 pm. I took that class the last time it was offered and learned how do basic loom beading, peyote beading and beading on fabric. Esther supplies all of the materials, so all you have to do is show up and be ready to learn. Admission is $25. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 to register.

We also will be having a special event for all of you local history buffs out there with the showing of the movie "Frances Slocum: Child of Two Americas" which is the true story of a remarkable American woman. Frances was abducted from Wilkes-Barre at the age of five during the American Revolution. The Slocum family looked for 60 years and found her in 1837 living as a prosperous Miami Indian matriarch. Please join us for this film, which captures some of our local history. A Q&A with the films makers and actors will follow the movie. Tickets are $5.00 each.

Then on Thursday, April 10 at 1:00 pm, we will have a Tom Knight Puppet show for little ones. Join us for this high-energy show, which is comprised of a collection of songs and skits for children of all ages about animals, the environment, food and books including “Alligator Jump” and “Henry the Magician”. Admission is free. It is great to see little ones singing and dancing along to the music.

Speaking of dancing, we will have a Ballroom Dancing for Beginners workshop this spring with instructor Connie Kintner. Learn how to waltz and fox trot in this introductory ballroom dancing class for adults. Classes will be held on Saturdays, April 5 - May 3 from 6:00 - 7:30 pm. Admission is $30 per person.

And remember, now is the time to make your reservation for the opening night of the spring film festival (April 11th at 6:00 pm). We can’t wait!

Use your imagination and learn all about acting through theater games, improvisation, storytelling, play making, character creation and more! Students will create their own characters and stories while learning how to act and how much fun theater is. a casual performance will end each week.
