At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

The pink and white cherry and apple trees were lined up in the field next to Mowry’s pond like ballerinas. Suddenly a whoosh of a breeze loosened the blossoms from their moorings and they leaped and twirled through the air like starlets in Swan Lake.

This is undoubtedly one of the most lush springs we’ve had in many years. It’s hard to go anywhere without being overwhelmed by the pastels of the season.

This morning I was reminded why I have Jack Russells. It’s because they make me laugh. They don’t walk if they can run, they don’t run if they can jump and tumble. I was going outside to hang sheets (I woke up hearing my mother’s voice saying “It’s a perfect day to hang out the wash, girls.”) and the three Jacks and the Rat (terrior) were literally in a tangle of growling and joyous hops trying to beat each other out the door. It was so silly, this tangle of furkids, that I had to put the wash basket down for a moment just to laugh. Which is a very good reason to have Jacks indeed!

Boy, do we have a great movie for you this week! The second installation of the Narnia Chronicles opens Friday night! It looks to be superb and I know a lot of young-‘uns and adults have been waiting for it. Once again the computer graphics are superb and the young actors charming. And for those who love C.S. Lewis and his storytelling, it is a perfect choice for a movie this weekend. It does look a tad darker than the first, so use your judgment when bringing very young kiddies. Mean stuff on the big screen can seem awfully scary to a pre-schooler.

Iron Man is with us for one more week. It’s a dandy film – my husband, who loves comic book heroes (it’s okay – he’s a former Marine -- - he’s allowed these little quirks) came to see it and gave it his version of a thumbs up. “It was great!” he said, and that’s about all the discussion we ever do about a movie. He is turned to mush at even the thought of having to have a “discussion” of the movie he has just seen. So, “It’s great” or “It was okay” are as good as it gets. And the “great” label doesn’t happen to very many movies.

Next week we hope to open Indian Jones for you. If we do, (fingers crossed) then we will run a midnight show to kick off the holiday weekend. Won’t it be such fun to hear that wonderful theme music playing in the Dietrich one more time? I love the music form the Indy series, and to hear it coming at us through the theater speakers will be simply amazing! It’s such a fun movie and this one looks to be simply wonderful, even if Harrison Ford is a little long in the tooth. But then again, there are some of us who shouldn’t comment on the age of others. (Heh heh.)

Before I go, I need to thank Ron Ulias and the middle school kids for the absolutely fabulous talent show they put on this past weekend. They raised nearly $2,000.00 for the Capital Campaign! Bless their hearts! And thank you, Ron, for your hard work and your constant dedication to your community and always to the kids. You’re our version of a super-hero!

So, many of you have asked me if we are going to get Sex and the City and Kung Fu Panda. Sigh. Eventually. But only second-run. And why is that? Because we only have two screens. When we have four we won’t have to make such horrendous decisions. We should be able to bring in most of the big films. So, take heart, dear movie lovers – soon, to the stirring sound of Indiana Jones to the rescue, we will (we hope we hope we hope) be breaking ground to add those wonderful new theaters to our grand old theater! Is that cool, or what?

See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

Almost a dozen students came out for our Photography Workshop last Wednesday night. Instructor Kenny Ganz started out the classes by having students talk about their photography experience and equipment. After Kenny gave a few ideas on photo composition, the class set out to take pictures around the theater and on Bridge and Tioga Streets. According to Bob Kulow who is assisting with the class, “I am looking forward to refining my skills and seeing photos other students take. Not only will we learn from Kenny, but we will learn from each other.” Bob is thrilled that we were able to bring Kenny to the Dietrich to teach since he has such a wealth of photography knowledge and can explain things well. Next week the class will be taking pictures at Tunkhannock’s Riverside Park.

Speaking of Tunkhannock’s Riverside Park, the Dietrich will host a couple of events there this summer. As a gift to the community for Founder’s Day, the Dietrich will be presenting Shakespeare in the Park on Saturday, June 21st at 7:00 pm. Growing up, I used to go to Misericordia University for Theatre on the Green where they featured a Shakespearean play each summer. It was wonderful to Shakespeare performed in an outdoor setting and I am so excited that we can bring Shakespeare to our beautiful Riverside Park in Tunkhannock. The Gamut Theatre Group of Harrisburg will be performing A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This production is the original text of Shakespeare brought to life by seven very talented and highly energetic actors. Please bring your own blanket and or chair to the event. Admission is free.

Our fourth annual Celebrate Our River Day will also be held at Tunkhannock’s Riverside Park on Saturday, July 26th from 3:00 - 8:00 pm. I think this will be our best River Day yet. We extended the event and have a fantastic lineup for entertainment. Environmental organizations will be at the park with displays and to share information about what they do. There will a river float that morning with David Buck of Endless Mountain Outfitters, and they will have kayak demos and sprint races at the park later in the day. We also plan to have other fun nature events at the park during the day. Admission is free. Stay tuned for more details.

For those techie teens and students out there, Rand Whipple of Box of Light Theatre will be back at the Dietrich this summer for Digital Arts Camp and Move Over Mr. Spielberg.
Students ages eight to thirteen are invited to explore claymation, special effects, and robotics in Digital Arts Camp. It is so amazing to see what students are able to create in such a short amount of time! I especially love to watch the short claymation films students make. They have great ideas. In Move Over Mr. Spielberg, teens and adults will focus on the art of digital filmmaking. Rand will teach students how to shoot, edit and score their own films. Move Over Mr. Spielberg students are also invited to come to a script-writing workshop the week before the camp to write a script for their digital film.
Digital Arts Camp and Move Over Mr. Spielberg: Digital Film Making Workshop will be held July 14 -18. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 for more information or to register.
