Battle of Wyoming
Wednesday, July 2 at 7:00 pm and 8:30 pm.
Presented by: Bill Bachman
Tickets: $5.
In 1778, 753 Americans were killed as the Revolution raged on. Of that number, 227 died in one day alone in Wyoming Valley, PA. It was the largest single loss of life by British and Indians against Americans that year. This presentation will take viewers back to the decisions and actions that resulted in "The Battle of Wyoming" July 3, 1778. | See www.dietrichtheater.com or phone 836-1022 for times | At The Dietrich By Hildy Morgan Guess what I heard last night? (Okay, so this is rhetorical since you’d be shouting at the newspaper if you really tried to answer.) I guess I have to back up a little. I was fixing supper and my husband came to the front door and said – “You have to come outside. Right now.”
“But…but…” You know, I was busy. What could be that important?
“Come on ,now. You need to hear this.”
So, I’m thinking, what is it I have to hear? Socrates ghost is on the front porch maybe spouting philosophy? The dog has learned to actually speak and is telling us how to invest in a volatile market? I mean, this better be good. After all, I’m in the middle of fixing dinner. I’m busy, busy, busy. Or something.
So I went out the front door, not at all happy with the interruption, and he’s not on the porch, he’s on the walkway in front of the house. And he’s standing there looking bewitched. Now my husband, the retired Marine who is all tough and bluster gets weak in the knees at our 100 (or something like it) year old rhododendron in full, glorious pink bloom.
Since we had already had our discussion of the flowers and how they are the finest anywhere, I thought it a little repetitive to be doing it once again. But, trying to occasionally be the good wife, I stood there next to him and gazed at the gigantic shrubs.
“Do you hear it?” he said.
I stood there for about ten seconds and then I realized what he was saying. Oh….my….gosh! I did hear it! I heard the bees! The hum, the drone, the buzz of the bumblebees that inhabited the blooms. It was incredible. And loud. And utterly joyous!
Last year there had been no bees and I was so worried. And now, this year, big old fat old bumblebees had come back to town! And that sound was better than any symphony I’ve ever heard! Thank you, Lord of the Bees. Thank you and thank you and thank you again. What a lovely and much needed surprise!
Okay – to the movies. I really am going to bring Sex and the City to you, but it will probably be at the end of the month because now I am bringing in another first-run. I know, I know. But it still will be a great movie and I SWEAR I’m bringing it in (for one reason: I can’t wait to see it!) And remember, if we had our four screens now you’d have seen it already and we wouldn’t have lost thousands of dollars this weekend by not showing it. Ooooh. Makes my tummy hurt.
Kung Fu Panda – such a great little film. Bring the kiddies. They’re gonna love it!
Culturally speaking, we’re bringing back Bill Bachman (you know, Francis Slocum doc) on July 2 at 7 and at 8:30 with his doc on the Battle of Wyoming. Military firearm replicas will be on display, questions will be answered, and all kinds of historical fun will be had. Mark the date!
June 21, one of our contributions to Founders Day, we will have a performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Riverside Park. Bring your own chairs or blankets. How cool is this? A real Shakespeare troupe will be performing one of the great comedies. Thanks to our sponsors, this is a free event. Bring the kids, some snacks, and be prepared to be entertained in our beautiful park (how lucky are we to have such a resource?) And the sponsors are: Golden Wealth Management Group/UBS Financial Services, Samuel and Antoinette Hockman, Route 6 Auto Body and, of course, the Dietrich itself. What a perfectly divine way to spend a summer night.
Darn! I’m out of space. And I wanted to tell you all about my friends at the Wyoming County Humane Society. It is my dream to some day win the lottery so I can give them the money they need to build a shelter. Sigh. So I’ll tell you about them next week.
See you at the Dietrich. | Now Showing

| Live at The Dietrich By Erica Rogler It is amazing what children can do with clay. Last Thursday I had the opportunity to visit our All About Pottery & Sculpture class in the Dietrich’s Dorothy G. Sheldon Art Studio. Students ages five through twelve were busy creating pottery. One student was creating a pot on a potter’s wheel and the other students were busy painting their pottery made in previous weeks. Each piece looked so unique. Instructor Steve Colley does a wonderful job teaching students basic techniques and then with those techniques, students create their own masterpieces.
Speaking of masterpieces, the Dietrich will be hosting a Tunkhannock Historic Homes Photo Exhibit starting on June 9th, which will run through July in our Earnshaw Gallery. We invite you to enjoy this exhibit comprised of photographs of the beautiful Tunkhannock's Historic Homes taken by amateur photographers. This display will bring Tunkhannock history alive for Founders' Day 2008. The exhibit will be open during scheduled movie times and by appointment. Call 570-996-1500 for more information.
We also will have a couple other events coming up this month including Shakespeare in the Park on June 21st at 7:00 pm at Tunkhannock’s Riverside Park. We are so excited to bring a live performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream to Tunkhannock. And what a beautiful setting to have the play performed in. The production will be the original text of Shakespeare brought to life by seven very talented and highly energetic actors of the Gamut Theatre Group of Harrisburg. Admission is free. Please bring your own blanket or chair. This will be a rain or shine event.
Then on Wednesday, June 25th at the 7:00 pm at the Dietrich author of the book Lake Carey, Walter Broughton, will give a talk entitled “With the Bunch at Lake Carey”. In this presentation, Mr. Broughton will share through vintage photographs how the people who gathered at Lake Carey retained their strong sense of community born of the shared privilege of a place at the lake and the pleasures of summer pastimes. Admission is free. This should be a great event for all of those who enjoy learning about local history.
And for children of all ages we have a fantastic lineup of camps and classes. These camps are like vacations where kids can explore new things whether it is theatre, pottery, painting, games, music, cultures, and more without having to leave home. For more information about summer camps and classes, visit www.dietrichtheater.com or give us a call at 570-996-1500. | More than the Movies at the Dietrich Theater Shakespeare in the Park
